Ricky Rubio Can Just Say "No"
I am continuing to hear confirmation of the news - first reported by DraftExpress - that Ricky Rubio has no interest in playing for Memphis or Oklahoma, the teams that will draft at Nos. 2 and 3, and that his agent, Dan Fegan, is trying to position the Spanish point guard in Los Angeles (1) or Sacramento (4). This could get very interesting. While there have been numerous examples of players discouraging teams from drafting them or forcing trades (Kobe Bryant, John Elway, Kiki Vandeweghe and Eli Manning, among others), Rubio has unusual leverage because he has to buy out the final two years of his contract with DKV Joventut before he can play in the league. The NBA team wanting to draft him can only contribute $500,000 toward the buyout, which means the youngster has to produce an amount estimated at $7-$10 millon, depending on the exchange rate.

Not that the Kings are strangers to extricating their first-round draft choices from sticky situations, by the way. The club's attorneys helped Peja Stojakovic and Hedo Turkoglu gain their releases from their respective teams in Greece and Turkey.

Lakers forward Odom is almost back in full swing
Lamar Odom's ailing back was much improved Thursday night. It was better than Wednesday, when it was better than Tuesday, when it was better than Monday, when it was better than Sunday, when it was better than Saturday. "We're more confident that he's going to be all right," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said of the team's sixth man. "He was moving much better (Thursday morning). It starts to look like he's natural again and not stilted by his injury."

Odom bruised his back when he crashed to the court after colliding with Houston's Shane Battier in Game 4 of the Lakers' second-round series against the Rockets. Odom also suffered a build-up of fluid near his spine.

Slowly but certainly, the soreness is subsiding. The fluid won't drain until after the playoffs, when Odom has a chance to rest his back. Still, his mobility appeared better Thursday for Game 2 against the Denver Nuggets than it was Tuesday for Game 1. Odom had seven points, eight rebounds and four assists in the Lakers' victory Tuesday.

Backup guard Shannon Brown revealed he suffered what he called "a slight concussion" when he ran into a tough but legal screen set by Andersen in the backcourt Tuesday. Brown said he was "all right" to play in Thursday's game, however. "I didn't see him at all," Brown said of Andersen. "It was one of those situations where they didn't really expect me to pick up full court."

Brown could have been aided by his teammates, but no one yelled, "Look out." It's a violation of good team defensive play on every level of the game, one Jackson pointed out during the video session Wednesday. "He showed the replays," Brown said. "Not too much. He didn't want to bring back the pain or give me aftershocks."

Ex-Bull's NBA championship rings net $53K
'96, '97, '98 | Bankrupt Brown laments: 'Those mean a lot to me'. Former Chicago Bull Randy Brown's three NBA championship rings were sold at auction Thursday for $53,833. The winning bidder, identified only as "RingKing," outbid Michael Jordan's publicist. A judge ordered them sold following Brown's 2008 bankruptcy filing. The minimum bid was $19,000.

Earlier this month, Brown said the rings -- from 1996, '97 and '98 -- were his most cherished possessions. "People figure that here's this guy ... he's played in the NBA, he just got fired [as a coach], he's broke, and here he is giving up his championship rings," he said. "That hurt me because those [rings] mean a lot to me."

MJ's publicist, Estee Portnoy, declined to say whether she was bidding on Jordan's behalf. Her final bid was $40,000. "I was just bidding to win," she said. "I didn't win." Portnoy also declined to say if she had intended to return the rings to Brown, Jordan's former teammate. "I didn't have any special motivation," she said. "I'm just disappointed I didn't win." The winning bidder will eventually be identified as part of the public record.

Richard Hamilton sues former agent
The Detroit Free Press reports: Pistons guard Rip Hamilton has filed a federal lawsuit accusing his former business manager, already at the center of recruiting allegations at the University of Connecticut, of stealing about $1 million from him. The lawsuit was filed in U.S. District court in eastern Pennsylvania against 34-year-old Josh Nochimson of Glenview, Ill. It accuses Nochimson of using Hamilton’s credit card to buy airline flights, game tickets and other items.

Charlotte Bobcats are for sale
The Charlotte Observer (Rick Bonnell) reports: Charlotte Bobcats majority owner Bob Johnson has stepped up efforts to sell the team, recently hiring a sports investment banker to look for a buyer. Sal Galatioto, president of New York-based Galatioto Sports Partners, confirmed to the Observer Thursday that he’s representing Johnson in a potential sale. Galatioto declined to comment further on the situation. Johnson told Observer columnist Scott Fowler last month that he’d like to sell controlling interest to minority owner Michael Jordan, the former NBA star who oversees the team’s basketball operations. Since then, according to multiple NBA sources, Johnson has begun looking for other potential buyers.

Washington Wizards hire Sam Cassell, Randy Wittman as assistant coaches
Washington Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld announced yesterday that the team has named Randy Wittman and Sam Cassell as assistant coaches on the staff of Head Coach Flip Saunders. Per team policy, terms of the contracts were not released. “Randy and Sam will be excellent additions to our coaching staff, and both will be instrumental in helping us achieve our goals,” said Saunders. “Randy brings a wealth of experience as a former head coach of two different teams and is very familiar with my system. I always regarded Sam as a coach on the floor during his playing days, and he brings instant credibility as a three-time NBA champion and a proven winner.”

Wittman was most recently with the Minnesota Timberwolves, where he served as head coach from January 23, 2007 to December 8, 2008. He previously served as head coach for the Cleveland Cavaliers from 1999-2001. He began his coaching career as an assistant coach with the Indiana Pacers in 1992, and later worked as an assistant for the Dallas Mavericks and Orlando Magic. Wittman played collegiately at Indiana University under Bobby Knight, helping the team to an NCAA championship in 1981. He was originally drafted by the Washington Bullets with the 22nd pick of the 1983 NBA Draft, and played nine seasons in the NBA for the Atlanta Hawks, Sacramento Kings and Indiana Pacers before retiring in 1992 with a career average of 7.4 points per game (.501 FG%) in 543 games. “I’m excited for the opportunity to work with Flip again, and I’m confident that the staff he is assembling will complement the talented roster that is already in place,” said Wittman. “I’m eager to help this team reach the next level and ready to get to work immediately on the court.”

The 2009-10 season will mark Cassell’s first foray into coaching after an outstanding 15-season playing career. In 993 career regular season games, the former All-Star and Baltimore native averaged 15.7 points and 6.0 assists per game. Cassell has won three NBA Championships (1994 and 1995 with Houston, 2008 with Boston), and appeared in the Eastern Conference Finals with Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld’s Milwaukee Bucks in 2001 and the Western Conference Finals under Flip Saunders with the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2004. “After 15 seasons playing in this league, I have accomplished all that I have dreamed of as a player,” said Cassell. “Now the time has come for to me to take my love for the game to the coaching ranks and pass on what I’ve learned. This team is loaded with talent, and it’s a great way for me to start my coaching career.”

Hawks coach Woodson to enter final year of deal
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports: What looks like pressure to some people looks like an opportunity to Hawks coach Mike Woodson. That’s why he was undeterred Thursday after it became clear he’ll enter next season in the final year of his contract. “There’s always pressure, if you want to call it that,” Woodson said after a day filled with meetings with Hawks officials and ownership. “I don’t look at it as pressure because I’m not made like that. All these people talking about fire Woodson and all that stuff, it’s never entered my mind. I swear. “The chatter is what it is. But we’re not going to do anything but keep pushing ahead trying to take another step next year.” Neither Woodson nor general manager Rick Sund broached the subject of a contract extension for the coach when they met.

Minnesota Timberwolves name David Kahn president of basketball operations
The Minnesota Timberwolves today named David Kahn as the franchise’s President of Basketball Operations. With nearly 15 years of front office experience in both the NBA and the NBA Development League, and 24 years of experience in positions directly related to professional basketball, Kahn will assume responsibility for all decisions made within the Timberwolves basketball operations department. “This is a milestone decision for our franchise and I couldn’t be more excited by our choice,” Taylor said. “David has studied under one of the most storied basketball minds in the league in Donnie Walsh and has clearly demonstrated that he has the intelligence, creativity, leadership and passion to take our team to the next level.” “This was a process that we were determined to perform with the utmost diligence and care. By speaking with legendary individuals like Jerry West and Pat Riley, we developed a short list of candidates whom eventually led us to the conclusion that it was time to inject a fresh voice into our basketball operations. We’ve worked hard over the last few seasons to put our team in a position to succeed, and I’m confident that with David’s vision we’ll continue that progress.”

From the time Kahn joined the Pacers in 1995 through his departure in 2004, the team compiled a 430-276 (.609) record, made eight playoff appearances and advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals four times, including an NBA Finals appearance in 2000. Kahn also served as the point person for the design, development and marketing of Conseco Fieldhouse, widely considered one of the finest arenas in the NBA. He also served three years as Indiana’s representative on the NBA’s Competition Committee, and assisted Walsh with all facets of the Pacers’ basketball operations, including signing players, hiring coaches, making trades and managing the salary cap.

Keep it, Sell It or Trade It: The Memphis Grizzlies have some options with their #2 overall selection in June 25th's NBA Draft. Immediately following the Draft Lottery league sources said they expected Memphis to trade their selection pointing to their roster and that unless they had gotten the top pick there wasn't really anyone in the class that they were overall enamored with. Over the past 24 hours a lot of stories have started filtering out of Memphis and Europe regarding what the Grizzlies are up to and where they may go with the pick.

The first option is to use the pick. League sources say that Grizzlies' GM Chris Wallace has been high on Spanish sensation Ricky Rubio for the better part of two years. The wrinkle here is Rubio may not want to eat his contract buyout to be Mike Conley's backup, and unless Wallace can convince Lionel Hollins that Rubio is a better fit in the short term than Conley, Wallace may face an uphill battle internally on getting his guy, which is Rubio. The problem with the pick is Wallace won't be the final decision maker, in fact that may fall on owner Michael Heisley who pledged to be more hands on going forward - including the hiring Lionel Hollins as head coach - and league sources believe Lionel may have more say on this pick than Wallace. It's likely why Chris Wallace and Lionel Hollins are headed to Spain to see Rubio play this week. Grizzlies' sources have said Heisley is more interested in Hasheem Thabeet, mainly because there is no risk involved in the pick and Thabeet solves some of the Grizzlies' defensive issues. Fans point to the exceptional play of Marc Gasol as the reason the Grizz should pass on Thabeet, but team sources say Gasol played his best basketball at the four spot and having big Hasheem in the paint might be better for Gasol in the long run; the Grizz wouldn't need Thabeet to score, which is something he's going to struggle doing at this level. The second option for the Grizzlies is to cash out the pick. The Number 2 pick could return a large variety of assets for the Grizzlies including cash. It's no secret the Grizzlies are struggling financially, and while news of the #2 pick has drummed up interest from season ticket holders, where exactly does the #2 pick play? The Grizz are loaded at virtually every position on the floor, so in essence you moving out a bonafide starter for a rookie or you are drafting a role player second overall. Not a good business move. The most cash that can be sent in a trade is $3 million. League sources contend that an offer of a pick in the top 10, $3 million in cash and a promising prospect or future draft pick might be enough compensation for the Grizzlies who clearly do not need another young player to be tempted to move it.

The third option is to trade the pick outright. The Number 2 and a Grizzlies roster player could return a serious piece, and that might be the best upgrade the Grizzlies can make. With roughly $36 million in guaranteed contracts next season the Grizzlies are looking at roughly $22 million in available cap space. They can absorb almost any contract in the league and still be below the salary cap. If they could convince a team to take on the ending contract of Darko Milicic, they could almost absorb two contracts of size. The #2 pick could be an enticing sweetener to get a legit star caliber player, something the Grizzlies desperately need to bring it all together. The Grizzlies look to be one of the more active teams around their draft pick, and don't be surprised to see them pass on Rubio not because of fear he won't come to the NBA, but rather because Chris Wallace may not be the one making the final decision, and when owners get involved it rarely results in good basketball decisions.

Keeping Big Ben?: The Bulls made it official yesterday naming Gar Forman to the General Manager position while keeping John Paxson in the role of Vice President of Basketball Operations. The Bulls will start working out possible draft picks this week at the Berto Center this week trying to narrow down their list of possible picks for their #16 overall selection.

Forman was asked by the press where he was on re-signing unrestricted free agent Ben Gordon, and his answer was as expected that the Bulls want to retain Ben this summer. "We like Ben," Forman said. "He's our kind of guy. He's got great makeup and character, a great work ethic. Our goal is to re-sign Ben Gordon. In the conversations we've had, I think Ben wants to stay here in Chicago."

Ironically Forman led most of the negotiations last summer with both Ben Gordon and Luol Deng, so the new talks with Gordon's agent will likely pick up where the old talks left off. "I think Raymond [Brothers] understands, like I do, that every negotiation is a new negotiation. Ben will know that we would like to have him back." The Bulls have roughly $64 million in guaranteed contracts next season, putting them roughly $6 million below the NBA's projected 2009 Luxury Tax threshold. Gordon's camp was seeking more than $60 million last summer, and given Gordon's play in the post season it's unlikely he drops his value, despite saying he wants to remain in Chicago. If the Bulls want to keep Gordon, they may have to find a way to shed some contract dollars which could play into the hands of teams with cap space. The Bulls have several ending contracts, including Brad Miller at $12.2 million, Jerome James at $6.6 million and Tim Thomas at $6.4 million - all will be attractive to teams looking to be under the salary cap in 2010.

Bobcats For Sale: Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer is reporting that Bobcat's owner Robert Johnson has retained the services of Galatioto Sports Partners in trying to find a buyer for the struggling Bobcats.

Johnson had hinted a few months ago to wanting to sell his 70% ownership stake to team President Michael Jordan, but seems to be looking elsewhere. The Observer is reporting that Johnson is seeking some $325 to $350 million for his stake in the company.

The Bobcats are expected to lose upwards of $35 million over the next two years making the Bobcats a tough sell, especially in this market economy. Sources told the Observer that Johnson's motivations for the sale are tied to losing "the passion for owning it."

Cassell's New Job: Point guard Sam Cassell is now longer a player – you can now call him Coach Cassell. Well, a lot of people did that anyway, but now it's official. Cassell will be an assistant coach under Flip Saunders for the Washington Wizards. "After 15 seasons playing in this league, I have accomplished all that I have dreamed of as a player," Cassell said. "Now the time has come for to me to take my love for the game to the coaching ranks and pass on what I've learned. This team is loaded with talent, and it's a great way for me to start my coaching career."

The fact Cassell would get into coaching has been a foregone conclusion for years. Cassell played for Saunders when both were with the Minnesota Timberwolves. "I always regarded Sam as a coach on the floor during his playing days," Saunders said. "And he brings instant credibility as a three-time NBA champion and a proven winner."

Former Wolves head coach Randy Wittman was also hired as an assistant in Washington.

Childress Back in NBA? Swingman Josh Childress made huge waves when he signed a three-year, $20 million deal last summer with Greek team Olympiacos. He did that instead of taking an offer here in the States, where the Hawks still hold his status as a restricted free agent assuming they make the qualifying offer of $4.84 million to him every summer.

His team played arch rival Panathinaikos in the league finals (Childress' team lost) and the game was marred by serious fan violence. It's causing Childress to re-think his contract – and he has an out after every season to return to the NBA. "The violence we saw today, will make me think real hard over my future in Europe,'' said Childress. This quote came from the Associated Press.

But is that really how he feels? Does that mean he's thinking about coming back to the States and restricted free agency with the Hawks? Call this Twitter Friday, because eight hours after that quote first hit headlines, Childress posted this to his Twitter account: "Not sure where this rumor and these quotes on si.com and espn.com came from. I never said any of that stuff!" Sounds like Childress is enjoying his European experience just fine, and doesn't sound like a guy who wants to change much.

Just Silly: Chad Ford of ESPN says a number of general managers around the league are telling him Los Angeles Clippers point guard Baron Davis could be had, and the Clippers would include the #1 pick in any deal. He also says Clippers president Andy Roeser shot that idea down pretty quick. On the surface, the idea of trading essentially Blake Griffin and Baron Davis – two starters – to a team like Memphis or Oklahoma City just to get out of Davis' contract is not just silly, it's plain crazy. On the other hand, it's the Clippers, so we can't rule anything out. Seriously though, is Davis the problem here? Sure, he didn't have a dominant season, but at the same time what are they going to do to replace him? Add in Mike Conley? Draft Ricky Rubio? It doesn't really matter to me what general managers are saying – that idea makes no sense on any level whatsoever.

Look at the Clippers' contracts and think about where the problems are. Where are they spending too much money on too many players who will need more minutes than are available? Here's a hint: it's not the point guard position. Perhaps Davis is on the market – though he seems genuinely excited to get Griffin as a teammate – and perhaps the Clips are open to trading the pick (despite frequent and public statements to the opposite), but why in the name of David Stern would they consider packaging the two? Of course, this is the team that thought it was a good idea to spend $36 million on Zach Randolph, Chris Kaman, and Marcus Camby for 2009-10, so who knows. Yes, if you are asking, that is 60% of their salary commitments to three players who play two positions. Davis makes $12.1 million next year? Big deal – he is not the problem. Keeping the pick will cause even more of a log jam, and those may be the two best trade assets, but considering their track record they might just keep the pick and trade Davis for another center.

Roeser shouldn't even have to give enough credence to a theory like this to deny it…Now, if Memphis was involved in a deal and it involved Mike Conley, Rudy Gay, and the #2 pick? That would make some sense. If Oklahoma City was involved and it involved Russell Westbrook, Jeff Green, and the #3 pick, that might make some sense, though less than the Memphis idea. Let us take this time here to remind everyone we are officially entering what we like to call crazy season. That's when rumors start all the time that make zero sense when given even a modicum of thought. We'll do our best to separate fact from fiction for our readers, but the first rule will always apply: if it sounds completely crazy, it probably is.

No Extension for Woodson
There will be no contract extension for Mike Woodson after leading the team to a 47-35 and their first appearance in the Eastern Conference Semifinals in 10 years. Woodson signed a two-year extension prior to this season, but as always seemed to be halfway on the hot seat regardless of the teams' success. The team is happy with the job Woodson and his staff has done up to this point though. "Mike and his staff did a good job this year," Rick Sund said to Sekou Smith of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "We won 47 games and locked up a top-four seed. In our business, that's not something that can be dismissed."

Woodson's become accostomed to talk like this over the years and isn't fazed by it in the least bit. "There's always pressure, if you want to call it that," Woodson said. "I don't look at it as pressure because I'm not made like that. All these people talking about fire Woodson and all that stuff, it's never entered my mind. I swear. The chatter is what it is. But we're not going to do anything but keep pushing ahead trying to take another step next year."

That is the exact kind of mentality that Woodson and his staff need to have. If the team continues to improve Woodson will get his extension and eventually the talk will die down. Until then they just need to focus on being the best coaching staff they can possibly be. Woodson is going to have to continue to prove himself, but if his past is any indication of what his future is going to be then we'll likely be talking about a multi-year extension at this time next year.

Kings Willing to Spend
It's been three years since the Sacramento Kings have made the playoffs and the fan base is starting to grow impatient as the Western Conference playoff picture continues to get harder and harder to get into. There was some hope that with a top two pick and either Blake Griffin or Ricky Rubio that the franchise's fortunes would change, but the Kings ended up with the 4th pick despite having the most ping pong balls in the draft lottery. However, team co-owner Gavin Maloof was far from disappointed about the results of the lottery even though they're likely not going to end up with Blake or Rubio. "We're going to get a great player at four, not good great. We're going to get another one at 23. Look at what Geoff with did Francisco Garcia, Kevin Martin, and Jason Thompson," said Gavin in an interview on KHTX in Sacramento. "Those are great picks. Everyone said why are you drafting a guy from Rider College? You gotta trust Geoff (Petrie)."

The saying goes that trust isn't given, it's earned and even after three down seasons there is still plenty of reasons to have confidence in Petrie. He's been relentless this offseason, working hard to be fully prepared for the draft in June and trying to get this team back to where they were earlier in the decade. "Geoff (Petrie) has worked very, very, very hard. He went to Europe twice in like two weeks. He and Mike Dunleavy are the only two American coaches or scouts to see this (Ricky) Rubio kid. He's done his homework and all of our scouts have done their homework and they've looked at all these players throughout the years since they were in junior high. We know everything about them: psychologically, mentally, physically, so, we've done our homework. We're gonna get a really, really, exciting player for this franchise."

As much attention as the Kings' front office has been paying attention to the draft, there is still the very pressing issue of the team not having a head coach. While ideally they'd like to have a coach sooner rather than later, they're not putting any timetable on finding the next leader for their team. "We're not going to rush into it," explained Gavin. " We're going to do our due diligence. We're going to check as many references as we can, we're going to interview as many coaches as we can, or possible candidates. In the end of the day we hope to make the right decision. There are some very, very qualified candidates out there."
