I remember in the beginning, that you was kind of suspicious about Rondo's ability too improve his shooting form and consistency significantly. Has that changed?
I would like to agree, that Rondo will get his 10 million per. I hope it won't be more than that.
Do we really want to pay Rondo?

billfromBoston wrote:This argument is pointless....they'll offer him a club-favorable extension this year and see if he bites, probably 8 million per....if he doesn't, they wait and see what he brings next year - then they can let the market set his price if they really want and get him for the QO if it all goes poorly...
I expect Rondo to come back a 10/per player next year - I think he learned his lesson about not working on his jumper last off-season - he got much better in-season....he won't waste this off-season...
With a consistent 15 footer and more practice on his floater - 2 things Tony Parker COULD NOT DO his first 3 years - Rondo will be a dangerous scoring threat to go along with his outstanding playmaking...
I'd love to see Rondo work on his open three pointers from the left hand side. This year he shot 15 of 48 from downtown in the regular season (0.7 attempts per game) but only 6 of 24 in the playoffs (1.7 attempts per game). A lot of those are with the shot clock winding down, but if he could get enough confidence to just TAKE the open three it makes the other team pay. That ugly .313 3PT% is actually equivalent to 47% shooting from the field. Rondo knocks down those open threes (even at a Jason Kidd pace) and it forces every other team to change their game plan. That means better spacing for the C's, more open looks for PP/RA/KG and better driving lanes for Rondo when he does pass up the shot...

Re: Do we really want to pay Rondo?
I know shooting percentage is not necessarily indicative of jump shooting ability. That is not what i was saying. What i was saying is that point guards tend to be bad shooters. No where did i say Rondo was a better shooter than those players. However, those numbers are indicative of the fact many point guards are also bad shooters. Devin Harris shooting percentage on jumpers? 41% (bad), Rose? 42%, Andre Miller? 40.7%, Stuckey? 42%, ect... So don't say that every point guard in the NBA is a great shooter.
You are wrong.
1) Those numbers your quoting don't factor in the DIFFICULTY of the shots made. Shorter players have to take shots from farther away and over taller players. (I explained this already).
2) Your conviently ignoring the fact that these shorter players are taking 3s!
Devin Harris for example shoots an eFG% jump of 54 %. (This is pretty damning oversight on your part)..
They should put you in a chapter for misuse of statistics..
Those statistics don't prove your point at all. Far more instructive is just watching guys play or getting to play with them.
I wouldn't call myself a great baller - but I have gotten to shoot around with a few good players. And one of them was Ben Gordon. Let me tell you just as a real life counter example that guy is a an OUT OF THIS WORLD shooter.
Watching him shoot baskets you can't imagine how he ever misses. But in an NBA game he will miss quite a bit. The main reason is that NBA athletes are SICK. They get after shots and alter them. They force good shooters to take difficult shots.
That's why we are saying Rondo is a such a poor shooter. Those statistics you love don't tell you that much really. Good shooters like Harris get COVERED. Bad shooters get left alone. Rondo is a bad shooter. If took a few of the contested 3s that Harris takes on a regular basis his percentages would plumett.
I think that Delonte West story of a few years back sticks out too. One dude on the boards got to actually play pick up game with West.. And West of course seemed kinda "good" but the main thing was he just never missed. Those pickup defenders generally won't even BOTHER an NBA guy..
I am telling you man. If you got a chance to play even with Brian Scalabrine you would be impressed with his shooting ability. Scalabrine though doesn't shoot a high percantage cause he has to shoot over guys like Rashard Lewis. I could play for a few months before getting as shot over some 6'10" high jumping long armed freak like him..

I don't see how you can get away with lowballing Rondo at 8 per, Bill. Rondo has improved dramatically each year. Not extending him now is betting that he won't raise his stock at all. 10 mil per is very reasonable.
ILH, it does seem that Rondo became increasingly more willing to take open 3s in the playoffs. His 3pt % has been creeping up over the past 2 years. We'll see if he's topped out.
