How About Going After Shawn Marion for the MLE?

Post#1 » by Jeezo1 » Sun May 24, 2009 11:41 pm

I'm sure he can be had for the MLE considering the economy right now. This would allow us to move Thornton to the bench as a 6th man for the added scoring punch. Also, Marion is a better rebounder and defender than Thornton. Since there is all this talk about how the Clippers are going to be more uptempo this year and Marion flourishes with that kind of system (Suns), I can see it being a perfect fit. Our starting line up would be

PG-Baron Davis
SG-Eric Gordon
SF-Shawn Marion
PF-Blake Griffen
C-Marcus Camby

Can you say the new Phoenix Suns? :)

Bench
PG-Mike Taylor
SG-Fred Jones/Mardy Collins
SF-Al Thornton/Steve Novak
PF-Zach Randolph
C-Chris Kaman/DeAndre Jordan

I would love to have Marion, but will he really sign for the MLE?
I've been an LA Clipper fan since 1998 and that will never change. I hate our new logo and jerseys!

With the economy, the cap going down, and teams saving for 2010 you never know. I'm guessing that a lot of teams aren't going to be willing to spend money this off season.

There's only so many teams with cap space. So he may very well end up taking an MLE deal this summer, but he would have to strongly consider his options as I am sure that there will be better teams willing to offer him an MLE deal as well.

I think somebody will offer him more than the MLE. Actually, Suns should try to re-sign him, both the SUns and Marion haven't prospered since the trade

Honestly I don't see many teams that would offer him the MLE with more talent than ours. He could choose to stay in Toronto and make a bit more. He could also come to play here on a team loaded with talent. Coming to play here also means playing in LA as opposed to playing in Canada.

Marion is from LA (right?), so that's a thought. But I think it would have to be a S/T, with you guys sending out Thornton/Filler...If the plan is to move Kaman, then you can extend it to something like this:

Thornton/Kaman

for

Marion (8mil, 3year deal with a team option for 4th)/Kapono/2nd rounder

There's no way Marion is signing for the MLE. He's already proven in the past he has a huge ego. He also wants to play for a winning team, which the Clippers can never really guarantee. I think he might stay in Toronto, and will try to sign with a playoff team.

That being said, I'd love for him to be a starter for the Clips. I just don't see it happening though.

I don't think that we will use the MLE this year unless we shed some payroll, since we will add almost $5 million for the #1 pick. The MLE would probably put us in the luxury tax if we stand pat.
