With the pre-draft camp totally changed this season, teams will have to depend on other aspects to judge players. No more 5-on-5 drills. Vince Ellis of the Free Press gives fans a list of players expected to attend the Chicago pre-draft combine. Individual workouts are one avenue to get a better look at players, and one of the players scheduled to work out for the Pistons is French prospect Nando De Colo. De Colo gave an interview to Draft Express Tuesday.

You probably haven't heard of Nando de Colo before; not unless you're an NBA executive, an NBA draft fanatic, or you reside in France. There's a good chance that will all change in the upcoming weeks though. The 6-5 combo guard is one of the top international prospects from the class of 1987 and a name that NBA teams have been getting more familiar with in the last two years. De Colo has a very good feel for the game, able to create his own shot effectively while also proving to be an excellent playmaker for his teammates. While there are still lingering questions about his actual position and his ability to defend at the next level, De Colo presents enough upside at the age of 21 that he will be on plenty of draft boards.
DraftExpress: What are your plans for the next few weeks?
Nando de Colo: For the moment I'm in Philadelphia, after that I will be going to work out in Detroit and Chicago I think, but I will see.
DX: With the elimination of 5-on-5 play at the pre draft camp, how are you going to be able to show off your feel for the game and your basketball IQ?
NDC: I can still show off my skills. In 5-on-5 I pass well and know how to play with the team. In these workouts I can play more for myself; I can shoot, create for myself off the dribble and I can get to the basket. I hope I can show off these skills...
DX: Is there a particular style you think fits you better? Are you more of an up tempo player or a half court one?
NDC: Last year I was more of a fast break guy, but this year I learned to play in the half court. So I can really play both of them, I think this is good for me. I can push the ball quickly but also slow down if the defense is there.

Nando de Colo is an interesting prospect and projected as a second-round pick. The NBA player he is compared to is Beno Udrih, which wouldn't be a bad selection to make with one of the Pistons three second-round picks. The Chicago combine is scheduled for Wednesday May 27th to Sunday May 31st. Stay tuned for further updates. Some of the information that comes out of the combine will help fans get a better idea of what players the Pistons will be looking at with their 2009 draft picks.

Night and Daye
EDITOR’S NOTE: Pistons.com continues its draft series with the fourth of a dozen profiles of players who figure to be under consideration by the Pistons for their pick at No. 15 in the first round of the June 25 draft. Today’s installment looks at Gonzaga forward Austin Daye. Perhaps the most gifted high school graduating basketball class was produced in 1979. Pistons fans would recognize many names on that list, none more than Isiah Lord Thomas III, who had a pretty nice career in Detroit that included the franchise’s first two NBA titles. Among his classmates were Ralph Sampson, James Worthy, Dominique Wilkins, Byron Scott, Sam Bowie and Clark Kellogg. When they gathered for that year’s McDonald’s All-American game, held in Charlotte, N.C., the MVP went to a member of the West team – UCLA recruit Darren Daye, who scored 22 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in a one-point overtime loss. Fast forward 30 years. Among the players the Pistons will be scrutinizing very closely with the 15th pick in the 2009 NBA draft is Gonzaga forward Austin Daye, Darren’s son. Daye, only 20, put his name in the draft but has yet to hire an agent and could still decide to return to Gonzaga between now and the June 15 deadline for pulling out. Most feel it’s likely he’ll stay in the draft – presenting NBA general managers with a dilemma. Though possessing a bevy of ideal qualities – tremendous length and above-average ball skills for a player of his size – Daye’s production was lacking at Gonzaga and his sophomore year was, in many respects, a disappointment.

The debate in war rooms over Daye, in fact, will be the reverse of ones personnel people will have over Pitt’s DeJuan Blair. While Daye has prototypical skills but marginal production, Blair has marginal measurables but off-the-charts productivity. So scouts are going to have to decide not what Daye’s ceiling would be, but how likely he is to reach it – and when. Teams really get a cheap look at a player for two years before needing to decide what his future holds. In two years, teams might not be able to accurately assess where Daye’s career is headed. There is some sentiment that Gonzaga had so many NBA prospects, including upperclassmen like Jeremy Pargo, Josh Heytvelt and Matt Bouldin, that coach Mark Few did little to feature Daye in hopes that he’d stick around for more than a season or two. There’s also the fact that Daye incurred a few injuries over last summer that slowed his progress as a sophomore. You could be swayed in either direction on Daye depending on which videotape you choose to watch. Against Tennessee, he had six points, one rebound, five turnovers and four fouls in 19 uninspired minutes.

Against Arizona, he went for 22 points with five blocked shots. Against Maryland, 17 points and 10 boards. But against Memphis, six points and three boards. Daye scored 20 points or more five times – but nine times he was held to single digits. There is a belief that Daye is going to start moving up draft boards as workouts unfold over the next four weeks leading into the draft because that’s where he shines – watching him run, shoot and glide around cones in drill work. It’s the five-on-five stuff where things tend to get a little messy for such prospects. While the consensus is that Daye represents a classic case of a young player whose needs would be best served by returning to college to prove to himself and others that he’s capable of dominating games at a mid-level Division I conference, it only takes one GM to get weak knees over a player’s athletic gifts and convince his agent that his client should stay in the draft. The best guesswork is that Daye will find more than one GM who gives him the encouragement he needs to believe he could work his way into the lottery. Right about now, it looks like a 50-50 call whether Daye will be available to the Pistons at 15 should he decide to stay in the draft. And you can bet the Pistons will have a spirited war room debate about his stock.

Selling Points – Daye’s a legit 6-foot-10, maybe 6-foot-11, and at 20 he could easily grow into a 7-footer. With today’s NBA placing a premium on power forwards who can step outside and play on the perimeter at both ends, that makes him especially intriguing. … There is a fluidity to his movements that suggests he could evolve into a big-time offensive player. … Natural shot-blocker, averaging 2.1 per game. … Handles it very well for a big man. … Shot better than 40 percent from the arc both seasons.

Buyer Beware – Was listed at 195 at Gonzaga and some scouts worry his frame won’t allow him to gain the strength necessary to defend inside. … Averaged twice as many turnovers as assists. … Some questioned his maturity level as he seemed to lack confidence or pout when things went against him early in games. … Despite skills, only an average athlete.

Garnett has knee surgery
The Celtics are expecting the now surgically repaired Kevin Garnett to be completely ready when training camp for the 2009-10 season begins.

Garnett underwent arthroscopy yesterday at New England Baptist Hospital that included the removal of posterior bone spurs from his right knee. The surgery was performed by Celtics physician Brian McKeon, assisted by Michael Belkin and John Richmond.

An NBA source said Garnett is expected to be out 6-8 weeks. He is expected to do rehabilitation in Boston first before continuing it in his offseason home of Malibu, Calif.

Hornets center Tyson Chandler underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left ankle and left big toe late last week in New York in an attempt to lessen inflammation and irritation that hampered Chandler throughout last season, while forward James Posey underwent a procedure on his right knee, the team announced Tuesday night.

Chandler missed 29 regular season games because of the ankle injury, and the team's last postseason game, while a mid-season trade to Oklahoma City was rescinded by the Thunder because of concerns surrounding the repair of Chandler's left toe in 2006. Chandler did not miss any games this season because of the toe.

No other details were available.

Clemson sharpshooter Oglesby leaving school to play in Europe
Terrence Oglesby, the Tigers' shoot-from-anywhere sophomore, called Purnell on Tuesday morning to tell him he was off to play professionally in Europe, giving up his final two college seasons., as first reported by Gary Parrish of CBSSports.com.

Oglesby, from Cleveland, Tenn., led the team with 92 3-pointers last season and was often an offensive catalyst in Clemson's NCAA season. But he'll be remembered by some for his final act with the Tigers, throwing an intention elbow to Michigan's Stu Douglass and getting ejected from the first-round NCAA loss to the Wolverines.

Oglesby finished as the team's third-leading scorer last season behind Trevor Booker and K.C. Rivers. Oglesby and Rivers, a senior last season, accounted for 161 of Clemson's 256 3-pointers this past winter.

A previous engagement
Perkins, Rondo to miss US camp. Several sources close to the situation said yesterday that Kendrick Perkins and Rajon Rondo would not participate in USA Basketball's minicamp in Las Vegas because of Perkins's wedding July 25 in Houston.

The USA Basketball mini-camp includes a meeting July 22, practice July 23-24, and an intrasquad scrimmage July 25.

Perkins and Rondo originally thought the minicamp was in June, but after recently learning the actual date, they had representatives contact USA Basketball to turn down the invitation.

Speaking of fighting, how about those tackles that Varejao put on me a couple of times during the game??? And I’m the one who gets the technical foul!!!! I was just playing with emotion. You get in the game and you score a big bucket, you let your emotions take over. I wasn’t taunting Varejao or anything. My thing was, it was a tough play, he grabbed me around the neck and I made the shot, so hopefully they will look at it.

The NBA announced this afternoon that is has rescinded the technical foul called on Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard in the second half of Tuesday night's Game 4 win over the Cavaliers in Orlando.

Howard was called for his sixth technical of the postseason when he taunted Cleveland's Anderson Varejao after completing a layup, despite Varejao wrapping him up in a bear hug under the basket.

With this afternoon's announcement, Howard is now back to five technicals for the playoffs.

The team's financial discipline will affect the future and, more specifically, restricted free agents Charlie Villanueva and Ramon Sessions, and possibly European player Ersan Ilyasova. It will affect whom the Bucks select in the draft and whether they will be able to sign a free agent this summer, which right now appears highly unlikely.

NBA rescinds Game 4 technical foul against Dwight Howard
The Cleveland Plain Dealer (Brian Windhorst) reports: The NBA announced this afternoon that is has rescinded the technical foul called on Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard in the second half of Tuesday night’s Game 4 win over the Cavaliers in Orlando. Howard was called for his sixth technical of the postseason when he taunted Cleveland’s Anderson Varejao after completing a layup, despite Varejao wrapping him up in a bear hug under the basket.

InsideHoops.com editor says: That ridiculous tech needed to be rescinded. I’m glad the league did it. The absurd techs being tossed around at any player who shows the least bit of emotion is really angering just about every fan and reporter I know of. Basketball is an emotional sport. Sports in general are emotional. A little bit of taunting, some fist-pumping, a bit of finger-pointing, enthusiasm, etc. are all part of basketball and make the game way more fun.

Ivan in Phil: Is Hasheem thabeet the next kwame brown?

Tommy Beer: I don't think Thabeet will be a Kwame Brown-caliber bust, mainly because he won't have the some hype and expectations heaped upon him the way Kwame did – after being the Michael Jordan hand-picked #1 overall selection. I envision Thabeet settling in as a serviceable NBA center that will blocks shots and rebound, while providing very little offense.

Steve Kyler: Sure, but it does not seem like that's where they are headed… as for the veteran concept, they have one… head coach Nate MacMillian…

michael in australia: Boozer to 1 of the 3 teams with cap space for their probable 2010 lottery pick and a role player? All 3 teams could use a low post scorer and the Jazz could do with cutting payroll and getting another high pick next year.

Steve Kyler: Not likely, Utah will want more compensation than that and Carlos has to agree to the team, unless its Detroit don't count on it.
