I understand Cassell joined the team as an assistant as well. It'd be odd if they had both.

The irony would be Cassell never played with Boston this season, goes to another team and won't play for them either next season. Speaking of Cassell, I think Boston could lose Thibodeau since his contract is up. Couldn't Boston have hired Cassell to the coaching staff?

Marbury
Arenas
Butler
Jamison
Haywood?Thomas? (Don't know much bout the wizards)

If this team can actually get healthy for once, that'd be a hell of a team to play Nellie ball with. Might not be a contender, but a team that could score a ton of points. And I mean a ton. It would really be interesting to watch tem because 3 years ago a Marbury/Arenas backcourt would probably implode about 3 games in due to egos. but both guys should be at points in their careers where they want to prove they can still play.

Marbury would be a backup, not a starter. Stevenson is the starting off guard with Arenas at point guard. In other words, Washington would've Marbury and James compete for backup duty and, presumingly, will look to trade Crittenton.

Buh-Bye. The experiment failed here. Celts fans found out what bitter Knicks fans were saying shortly after the signing - Marbury is done. His explosiveness is gone, limiting his chances at getting to the rim. And even when he gets there, he rarely finishes. Plus his jumper isn't reliable enough to make him the scoring threat that Boston needed. The one thing I did enjoy about him was his ability to find Eddie on the wing and in the corners.

If Marbury does bolt, I have a feeling that Danny will place at least one phone call to another PG to see how serious this guy is about getting a ring. Game is similar to Rondo's, big enough to guard 2s, and would compliment Eddie's game quite nicely. Definitely in the twilight of his career, has a couple of gold medals but no championship ring yet. Hopefully McDyess is on his way here, so he can help recruit his buddy to come on down to Beantown as well.

Mike James has chosen to exercise his player's option for next season. As a result, this might now raise doubt that Washington has room for Marbury should they even consider him. He's definitely an option. And with the addition of Cassell, Arenas could look to be more of a facilitator next season. He certainly showed this season, averaging ten assists in two games returning from injury, that he doesn't have to be the primary scorer on the team. If Cassell can influence him in any positive way, watch out eastern conference.

As far as a veteran point guard to replace Marbury. Who's really worthwhile? I've this feeling that Andre Miller could sign with Portland and Kidd resigns with Dallas. And Bibby wants to return to Atlanta, if possible. The only other solid veterans hitting free agency are Lue and Jacque Vaughn. Lue has had a few opportunities to sign with Boston and didn't or wouldn't for whatever the reason. And Vaughn was a teammate of Pierce's at Kansas. I would've an interest in Vaughn.

I don't know if this is encouraging or discouraging considering I'll like to move on from him.

Free agent guard Stephon Marbury displayed his interest in re-signing with the Celtics by keeping his Waltham apartment near the practice facility. He was at the facility, shooting, a day after the team's season ended.

Why not? My opinion is that a Marbury that is showing the desire to improve on his game (a day after his season ended) is probably a Marbury worth bringing back. And I was somebody who thought that Ainge was nuts for even bringing the guy in in the first place. But, even though some of his physical ability was lacking, he had a very team-oriented attitude during his stint in Boston. Given a full season to get back into prime condition and to better learn the team's offense and defense, and I have a hard time thinking Ainge will be able to find a better PG option out there w/ the MLE. I wouldn't give a multi-year deal, but I would be fine with maybe two years.

Or he and agent realize that few if any teams (including overseas) will express a genuine interest in him other than Boston.

I expect Boston to return to being a strong team in the eastern conference next season once everyone's healthy and the bench needs are resolved. Knowing this, of course Marbury wants to return. It's becoming more clear that the Washington option was no more than media speculation.

If a veteran point guard under contract were to become available in the coming months, like Blake. I'd rather pursue that option before settling on Marbury.

I'm still skeptical that Marbs could beat out Eddie House for backup PG. The House/Marbs backcourt is really too small, and I think we have to bring along Pruitt/JR/Walker anyways. I dunno, I'd just as soon see Marbury move on. Although he was a good citizen, I just don't think he's got a lot left in the tank.
