Jackson Irritated with NBA's Foul Review
(Phil) Jackson was not happy to hear that he and the Lakers were each fined $25,000 because he criticized the referees after Game 4.

I didn't think very good of it at all," Jackson said. "I didn't go through the litany of things that we certainly have [experienced] over this series. But that's the league for you. They'll come back and hammer."

Jackson said the NBA's disciplinary process, including reviews of technical fouls and flagrant fouls, was confusing, if not irritating. "We might need some candidates for Supreme Court justices to be sitting in the situation because there's so many judgments going on," he said.

Blake To Get Shoulder Scoped
Trail Blazers guard Steve Blake will undergo arthroscopic shoulder surgery on Friday, May 29, General Manager Kevin Pritchard announced today. "Steve continues to experience some shoulder discomfort," said Pritchard. "We need to go in, clean a few things up and get it stabilized. He should be good to go in about 6-8 weeks."

The injury originally occurred when Blake separated his right shoulder trying to fight through a screen in the second quarter of Portland's game at Philadelphia on January 14. The injury sidelined Blake for five games. He returned to action on January 26 at the Los Angeles Clippers and re-aggravated the injury in the second quarter, forcing him to miss an additional eight games.

The surgery will be performed by Dr. Neal S. ElAttrache at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles.

Violet Palmer Leaving For WCC
Violet Palmer is leaving the NBA after 12 years officiating games to become co-ordinator of women's basketball officials for the West Coast Conference.

Her hiring was announced Thursday.

Palmer became the first woman to officiate a major U.S. professional sport when she made her NBA debut on Oct. 31, 1997. She has spent the last 12 seasons in the NBA, and officiated four playoff games and more than 700 regular season games. She also worked in the CBA and WNBA.

Clemson's Oglesby to play pro ball overseas
Terrence Oglesby, the Tigers' shoot-from-anywhere sophomore, called Purnell on Tuesday morning to tell him he was off to play professionally in Europe, giving up his final two college seasons.

Oglesby, from Cleveland, Tenn., led the team with 92 3-pointers last season and was often an offensive catalyst in Clemson's NCAA season. But he'll be remembered by some for his final act with the Tigers, throwing an intention elbow to Michigan's Stu Douglass and getting ejected from the first-round NCAA loss to the Wolverines.

Purnell had had several conversations with Oglesby since season's end to discuss 2009-10 and was blindsided by his guard's decision. "I'm disappointed he won't be with us," Purnell said Wednesday. "Yet at the same time, it's a decision I believe he made in concert with his family. It is what it is."

Report: NCAA accuses Memphis Tigers of violations
The University of Memphis is responding to NCAA allegations that the men's basketball program committed major violations during the 2007-08 season under John Calipari, a newspaper reported Wednesday. The allegations include "knowing fraudulence or misconduct" on an SAT exam by a player on that season's team, which finished runner-up in the NCAA tournament, The Commercial Appeal in Memphis reported on its Web site. The university received the notice on Jan. 16. Lamar Chance, spokesman for the basketball program, declined comment Wednesday night when contacted by The Associated Press.

Kentucky, where Calipari became coach on March 31, said Calipari "was forthcoming with the University of Kentucky during the hiring process about any issues under investigation at the University of Memphis at that time." In a statement late Wednesday, Kentucky said Calipari had received a letter from the NCAA saying he was not at risk of being charged with any NCAA violations in the case. Calipari said in the statement that he would fully cooperate with the NCAA's Committee on Infractions hearing on June 6 and had no further comment. Because of privacy laws, the player's name was redacted in the report, which was obtained by the newspaper through the Freedom of Information Act.

Calipari is not named in the report, the newspaper said. The NCAA also alleged Memphis provided $2,260 in free travel to road games for an associate of a player. Those names also were redacted in the report due to privacy laws, the paper reported. "We take it very seriously. We don't condone it," athletic director R.C. Johnson told the paper. He declined to comment in detail about the allegations. "We're doing a thorough investigation." Johnson said the university is still working on its response to the NCAA. Calls by The Associated Press to former Memphis assistant coaches Orlando Antigua and John Robic, both of whom went to Kentucky with Calipari, were not immediately returned.

Meanwhile, Dallas Mavericks guard Jose Juan Barea underwent successful arthroscopic surgery to repair a cartilage injury to his left shoulder. The surgery was performed in Dallas by Dr. Richard Levy of Texas Sports Medicine. A timetable for his return has not been set.

All kidding aside, Morey is confident his team will be able to acquire a first round pick, so expect the Rockets to be busy . . .as usual . . .on draft night.

Magic To Be Fined?
It's been that kind of postseason. The refs have been the center of attention more than usual, from their strange non-call that cost the Dallas Mavericks a game (and the even more bizarre admission of said omission) to technicals that have been rescinded after the fact, NBA fans have been treated to some of the worst officiating in the long, sad history of poor officiating. With that in mind, it seemed only appropriate that KLAC host Chris Myers would wonder aloud to Orlando Magic President Pat Williams whether or not the NBA would fine the Magic for eliminating LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. "Here's what I think happened," explained Williams. "The LeBron/Kobe thing has been so visible and so publicized, but unbeknownst to the public, before the playoffs started we were 8-3 with Cleveland over the last three years. Right now we're 11-4 with them over the last three years. I think people also miss the fact — and was underneath the radar screen — that Denver has just put together this marvelous group with this unbelievable chemistry."

Considering that ESPN and the NBA have been pimping the LeBron/Kobe NBA Finals since before the season even started, it does make you wonder what the blow-back will be if that doesn't actually transpire. It's clearly a joke to say the league would "fine" the Magic, but that would seem to be the perfect ending to once of the worst displays of officiating ever. Still, Williams says the referee is an old one. "That's always been the case. I remember my friend, the late Joe Axelson, said that these athletes are so great and so gifted that when you make rule changes or alter the game in any way, they have the ability to adjust. And players do have the ability to adjust. I think the main thing they want is consistency, that the game will be called the same in the early stages as the late stages."

Exactly right. I've been asked a thousand times how to fix the officiating, and my answer is the same every time: a foul in preseason should be a foul in Game 7 of the NBA Finals. If Rajon Rondo hitting a guy in the face is a technical foul, then Kobe Bryant hitting a guy in the face should be a technical foul. Consistent calls solve this problem, and having a couple of challenges for each coach wouldn't hurt, either. And maybe . . .just maybe . . .we could wait until the NBA Finals are actually set before we start handing out the championship rings.

Good Moon Rising: Jamario Moon is recovering from a sports hernia, but the restricted free agent did make headlines yesterday when he told the Miami Herald that, "(The Miami HEAT) are really impressed with me."

Moon has a good mid-range jumper, but excels at finishing at the rim and one-on-one defense. Whether or not the HEAT are willing to go past the luxury tax threshold to re-sign him remains to be seen.

The team has just under $70 million committed for next season and if Moon commands anything close to mid-level exception money, he could price his way out of town. There are many teams in the NBA that could use his skill set (Boston, for instance, played without a true backup small forward this year after losing James Posey last summer) and there is a good chance that Miami would not match any competing offers. Don't be surprised to see this Moon rising somewhere else next season.

Walter Hermann Returns to Spain: Detroit's Walter Hermann skipped out on representing his native Argentina the last Olympics in order to better prepare himself for the upcoming NBA season. And while he did have his moments, it appears his NBA dreams may be fading fast. A French-language website has reported that Hermann is close to returning to Spain where he played professionally before coming to the NBA.

With a good physique and strong hands, Hermann looked very imposing for the Pistons, but never could find his way into Michael Curry's rotation. Hermann now joins the laundry list of former NBA Europeans who are heading back across the Atlantic to cash in on the free agent boom. In the coming weeks, don't be surprised if more and more NBA backups sign overseas. The euro compares favorably to the U.S. dollar, and with the NBA salary cap remaining stagnant, many teams can't afford too many veterans on their bench.

Mike James Stays in Washington: Point guard Mike James has exercised his player option for the 2009-2010 season to stay with the Wizards. He will make about $6.5 million next season. That also means he will be an ending contract, so if the Wizards feel Gilbert Arenas is healthy enough, they could look into trading James' ending deal. "Mike greatly enjoyed his time in Washington after the trade in December of last year," agent Bernie Lee told Craig Stouffer of the Washington Examiner. "The trade was exactly the re-energization that Mike's career needed, and with a summer of preparation and a full training camp, Mike looks forward to an even better season next year, filling whatever role Flip Saunders asks of him."

James was involved in a three-team deal that moved him from the New Orleans Hornets to the Wizards. Also in the deal Antonio Daniels went from Washington to New Orleans and the Wizards received Javaris Crittenton from the Memphis Grizzlies.

James averaged 9.6 points and 3.6 assists 39% shooting in 29.6 minutes a game for Washington, including 53 games and 50 starts.

Kidd's Numbers Justify Free Agent Money: It shouldn't be a surprise the Dallas Mavericks want to keep free agent point guard Jason Kidd. Sure, he's 36 years young and has played in over 1100 regular season games, but he also keeps himself in good shape and is one of the smartest players ever to step on the NBA hardwood.

Like everyone else, Dallas has heard the rumors that a team like the Cleveland Cavaliers or the Los Angeles Lakers may be interested in adding the brains and talents of Kidd in order to make another championship run, but the Mavs feel like they have shown Kidd he can be part of something special in Dallas. "There's no clear-cut way to a title," Mavericks president Donnie Nelson told Eddie Sefko of the Dallas Morning News Wednesday. "And I think Jason really likes being part of a process, to be part of building toward something."

But isn't that right there part of the issue? I mean, you can't get around the fact Kidd is 36 with 1100 games on him, so is being part of building something really what he will want? Sure, Dallas can offer him more money than any other team in the league. Considering he just made $21.4 million in 2008-09, if Kidd really wants to be part of a championship run it's a safe bet money won't be the top consideration.
How much of a consideration is Kidd's age? His stats were not far off at all in 2008-09 compared with his career averages:
Stat – 08-09 – Career
Points – 9.0 – 13.8
Assists – 8.7 – 9.2
Rebounds – 6.1 – 6.7
Steals – 2.0 – 2.0
Blocks – 0.5 – 0.3
FG% - 41.6 – 40.2
3FG% - 40.6 – 34.2
FT% - 81.9 – 78.2

Ivan in Phil: Is Hasheem thabeet the next kwame brown?

Tommy Beer: I don't think Thabeet will be a Kwame Brown-caliber bust, mainly because he won't have the some hype and expectations heaped upon him the way Kwame did – after being the Michael Jordan hand-picked #1 overall selection. I envision Thabeet settling in as a serviceable NBA center that will blocks shots and rebound, while providing very little offense.

Dave in Detroit, Michigan: Hello Tommy, who do you see the Pistons targeting perhaps through trades and through free agency?

Tommy Beer: Hey Dave - I think Boozer is their #1 target. Dumars has had his eye this highly coveted cap-space since the day he traded Billups for Iverson. There are very few teams with both the cap-space and available cash to spend this summer. Dumars should get the pick of the 2009 FA litter, which is Boozer.

Eric in SF, CA: 1) If you are Kevin Pritchard who are some potential veterans you would like to target via trade/FA to add experience and toughness? 2) With the #24 pick in the 2009 NBA Draft the Portland Trailblazers select...?

Jason Fleming: I'm a big fan of Antonio McDyess and am warming to the idea of Jason Kidd. As for 24, I doubt Portland picks there. If they do, I like the ideas of Gani Lawal, Sam Young, or Tyler Hansbrough.

Antonia in Houston: do u think if nuggets wouldve had mcdyss they would be better than ever. imagine a nice role player when martin rests

Jason Fleming: Yeah, that would have been nice. Heck, they paid him anyway. The real question is do you think McDyess is regretting his decision? Sure, it meant he didn't have to move, but was that really the best career choice?

Antoine in France: Who do you rank as the top 5 Blazers ever? Personnally, I became a Blazers fan because I loved Rasheed's game the first time I saw him play, but I believe I'd say Walton, Drexler, Sabonis, Pippen, and maybe... Roy? (in no particular order)

Jason Fleming: Drexler, Porter, Mo Lucas, Walton, Buck Williams...Roy needs to give me two more good years first.

You may know by now that I received a trivia request for a Rap song that made mention of Isiah, Dumars, Laimbeer…ect. Well I am not sure if this is it, but it’s a gem. Thanks to good friend and Need4Sheed reader Kevin Antcliff (a fellow Detroit blogger) who did all the dirty work for us. He remembered the song, dug up his VHS (yes he still has it) of Pure Pistons: 1990 NBA Championship and took care of the rest.

A Motor City Classic

Pump it up Pistons

Walter Hermann Might Leave the NBA
Walter Hermann might return to Spain to play for Pamesa Valencia. Hermann spent four years in Spain after starting his career in his native Argentina

I'm a big Walter Hermann fan, but this doesn't surprise me. He doesn't seem to fit in with the Pistons scheme, or any other team's really. Or else he would have had a more prominent role with the lowly Bobcats and the Pistons this year, right? Overseas, he was an MVP and a Slam Dunk Champ.
