I'm really surprised by this. I actually expected Rose to be a good student for some reason. Even if Rose was a bad student, I really don't know why he couldn't just take the SAT's. There had to be one D1 school in the country who would have accepted him regardless of his grades. I'm sure that an NBA team would have picked him regardless of which school he went to.

-DePaul, my alma mater, had been terrible for years. Suddenly, they fielded a team that consisted of 4 players who eventually went on to the NBA (Quentin Richardson, Bobby Simmons, Steven Hunter, Paul MacPhereson). I'm supposed to believe they weren't paid to play?

-The myth goes that OJ Mayo supposedly called Tim Floyd on his own and told him that he was going to USC and he was bringing a friend with him. I'm supposed to believe that?

-Everyone from Chris Webber to Maceo Baston (or at least Tractor Traylor) was paid to play at Michigan in the 90's.

I do believe some programs are legitimately clean. I do not, believe, however, that any of them have won an NCAA title in recent memory.

DePaul definitely did cheat. I know for a fact, one of those four players had a nice Ford Excursion fully loaded when it first came out. Pretty expensive though it's not my cup of tea.

Duke does not run a clean program. NCAA has too much to lose from putting their golden program on probation though. Duhon's mom got a job. Boozer was somewhat involved too.

Derrick's pretty dumb though.

The only thing that stands out to me is...

How bad could his damn grades have been? I understand he doesn't sound overly intelligent when he is spoken to, but so dumb that his grades need to be forged? Was he only given the ability to understand basketball when he was born?

well you could have a B-/C+ (2.7-2.8) average and still not qualify for a full scholarship

i know some schools minimum for a sports scholarship is 2.5 but you would have to have outstanding aptitude test scores to boot

i think most schools are demanding a 3.0 with average test scores

Red Larrivee wrote:I don't think it means Derrick is dumb, just means he's a 6'3 point guard with elite athleticism, speed, strength and the ability to breeze by defenders at will and get to wherever he wants to on the court.

Simply put, he's a high school basketball superstar and as expected, players like that don't have much interest in the high school part because they're not going to need it. Stuff like this happens everywhere.

That's how I read it.

My guess is that nobody knows what grades would have gotten, had he worked hard and applied himself, he may have never needed to.

Note that in both instances, Rose 'didn't do anything' and it was adults in a position of some trust were the culprits. If someone had said to me, you don't have to take your SAT's, for example, wouldn't have had to ask twice. Kind of like asking a kid, would you rather go to school or go outside and play today?

Sorry to put a dark cloud on the Golden Boy love session.

If this kid actually lived up to the crazy hype on this board this year, we'd be in the finals!

You'll be surprised at how forgiving people can be of a genuine apology. Nothing our American media loves more than a redemption story. This story isn't going away by ignoring it though.

And if Rose could read, he might follow your advice.

Do you know Derrick Rose personally? If you don't, stfu. Not being articulate and doing poorly in school doesn't make a guy stupid. You guys act like you know Derrick personally when in reality you know nothing about him.

^that's true...not being articulate doesnt equate being stupid...doing poorly in school doesnt equate being stupid (i should know with my 1.9 GPA)...but when you add them together plus the other allegations from derrick...

Rose isn't dumb. Obviously he took the easy road, there's no doubt about it. But, come on, for as bad of an interviewer as he is, he's still not even close to Hester. My god, that guy speaks his own language.
