Trade of players w team options?

Post#1 » by daddyfivestar » Fri May 29, 2009 10:44 pm

Can a trade like the following occur, while still in 08-09 figures?

LAL and LAC both over the cap, Lakers would like to reduce some salary for next season and Clips can use the incoming player, on and off the court...

Farmar (1080000) for Novak (700's), the 125 pct plus 100k equals 1096976 so the $ fit.

Lakers want to avoid the extra salary in 09-10 and plan to let Novak walk. Since there is the option on him, can this even be done?

Thanks.

That would be a no go. If you want to pull something like that, you need to find someone with a non-guaranteed ontract and then waive them.

Larry's CBA FAQ #85:
Teams are free to make trades again once their season has ended, but cannot trade players whose contracts are ending or could end due to an option or ETO.

Players and teams can invoke their options for the following season as a concurrent part of the trade (for example, Alex Acker could be traded for Marcus E. Williams right now, but only if the Clippers pick up his team option as a part of the deal, putting him on San An's books for next year). This doesn't happen much, though.

Just to clear up what appears to be a misconception about daddyfivestar's original proposition. The Clippers do not have a Team Option on Novak. He is a restricted free agent.
