Off-season Ideas

Post#1 » by Pula_86 » Sun May 31, 2009 3:38 am

No need to wallow in dissapointment. What should we do to make us a championship caliber team, which we certainly were not this year. The number one priority should be to blow up their front line and then add another guard or forward who can shoot. A few post players available in free agency that I like:

Restricted:
PF-Glen Davis: Would give the Cavs a legitimate offensive threat in the post who could knock down the outside shot. Celtics must make a decision with Powe, Davis, and House free agents. I would offer the mid-level exception.
PF-Leon Powe-Same as Davis except Davis gives you offense
PF-Hakim Warrick-Role player type defender. If he could be had for cheap he woudl upgrade the Cavs athleticism on the frontline
SF-Linas Kleiza-Good shooter who impressed me with his toughness. What would you have to pay Kleiza. May not have enough if we sign Big Baby.
PF/C-Channing Frye: Will probably be the odd man out in Portland. I like his size and if he would sign for cheap he would give the Cavs a shot blocking presence off the bench.

Unrestricted:
SG-Eddie House-Probably resigns with the Celtics, but showed he is not afraid to take shots. Would give the Cavs a threat off the bench. There's a concern he turns into Damon Jones.
SG-Dahntay Jones: Solid outside shot with a hard nosed defense mentality. He would be a great role player off the bench to add depth.
SG-Kyle Korver: The ultimate shooter that would make teams pay for doubling Lebron. Probably will get a lot in free agency, but if he was willing to play for cheap he would be a nice addition if the Cavs can add a big guy.
SG-Matt Barnes: Great defender and an ok shooter would be an improvement off the bench
SF-Grant Hill: Old verteran who can create his own shot. If he would come for cheap, he could add another dimension to the Cavs offense.
SG-Von Wafer: A guy who is not afraid to shoot I like him as a role player for cheap in free agency.
SF/PF-Ron Artest: Would probably cost the Cavs a shot at a max player next year in free agency, but would provide instant toughness and has developed into a scorer. Still, Artest is crazy.
PF-Antonio McDyess: Can hit the mid range jumper. Still a good defender and rebounder. WOuld be ideal if Big Baby resigns with the Cs or if he asks for too much.
PF/C-Rasheed Wallace: How much will Sheed command? If he could be had for the mid-level you certinaly like his size and athleticism even at his age.

Ideal Offseason:
1. Sign Glen Davis
2. Sign Rasheed Wallace
2. Sign Von Wafer
3. Sign Dahntay Jones
4. Sign Channing Frye
5. Draft Tyler Hansbrough, Taj Gibson or DeJuan Summers
6. Trade Pavlovic, Wallace, and Z (if possible)
7. Resign Joe Smith

Lineup:
PG Delonte West/Daniel Gibson
SG Maurice Williams/Von Wafer
SF Lebron James/Dahntay Jones/Dejuan Summers
PF Glen Davis/Channing Frye/JJ Hickson
C Rasheed Wallace/Joe Smith

Terrible ideas. Buying NY tickets for LeBron would be better than this.

The team has regressed since making the NBA finals two years ago. I'd like to hear any type of suggestions. The Cavs have a great opportunity to win right now because we really don't know what will happen with Lebron after next year. Danny Ferry dropped the ball, but he has a chance to redeem himself with a good offseason. I don't see how bringing in the guys I suggested does not improve this team. If any of our players had a lot of trade value I would be open to a trade, but who will the Cavs really be able to get. Not Amare Stoudamire or Chris Bosh. Please do not tell me that you actually think that bringing back Varejao and Big Z as our front court is a good idea.

66 wins and made the conference finals. There are way more reasons for LeBron to stay in Cleveland than for him to leave. To argue differently is just wishful thinking.

Need someone to defend Dwight for next year's playoffs.

If Cleveland still has Z and Ben Wallace a year from now and plays Orlando again, Cleveland will likely lose again.

Z or Wallace needs to be gone before or on the day of next season's trade deadline.

Resign AV for no more than 7 million a year.

Cleveland really needs to get LeBron a top 30 player to play with.

Mo is not a top 30 player.

Here is my idea...

1. Trade Z to Toronto in a sign and trade for Shawn Marion. Marion won't re-sign with Toronto so in this case they at least get something for him. And Z would be a nice center to put next to Bosh and Z is a big expiring. We all love Z...but he came up small in the playoffs (again) and it is time to upgrade the team. Marion then signs a 3 year/24 million dollar contract.

2. Trade Ben Wallace's expiring contract to either New Orleans for Tyson Chandler/Julian Wright or Philadelphia for Samuel Dalembert/pick swap (we get their 17th pick and they get our 30th pick). If Ben Wallace retires, we could just take on Tyson's salary straight up.

3. Sign Jarvis Hayes to a 2 year/$10-12 million contract. We need a taller/athletic SG/SF to matchup with the bigger guards in the NBA. Hayes was solid for New Jersey last year.

4. Re-sign Varejao to a smart deal....something in the $6 million/year range. Or sign another big like Gortat/ZaZa/Bass if Andy wants absurd money.

5. Cut Sasha. We can give him a million or so in a buy-out.

6. Sign Joe Smith to a $2 million or so deal.

So our new lineup would look like this....

PG: Mo Williams
SG: Delonte West
SF: LeBron James
PF: Shawn Marion
C: Tyson Chandler or Samuel Dalembert

Bench
-Daniel Gibson
-Jarvis Hayes
-Anderson Varejao
-Joe Smith
-Julian Wright

That lineup gives us versatility all over. Marion could play with a Center like Dalembert or Chandler because those 2 are defensive oriented bigs. And if we needed to go bigger, Andy could play the 4 with one of our big Centers. But we would be much more versatile on defense as Marion could easily matchup with the Odoms and Lewis' of the world.

All of these moves are sensible as well. I think we could take Marion from Toronto and give them Z and I think we could realistically get Chandler or Dalembert for an expiring in Wallace. Plus all of these guys that we would be adding (except for Marion) would be expiring after 2011, giving us cap-space when not as many teams will be battling for elite players.

a 3-way trade!: CLE-LAC-NOH

CLE: B. Wallace/Z. Ilgauskas/A. Pavlovic/T. Kinsey
-for: Z. Randolph/T. Chandler/M. Peterson

LAC: Z. Randolph
-for: B. Wallace/T. Kinsey

NOH: T. Chandler/M. Peterson
-for: Z. Ilgauskas/A. Pavlovic

NOH: save cap 2contracts from 2years for 2contracts from 1year
LAC: open up the PF spot for B. Griffin + would do a follow up trade to trade Kaman (keep Camby/Wallace)
CLE: get their scoring-defense post punch (Randolph=O / Chandler=D) + Peterson is a slightly better version of Pavlovic

#1 no team is dumb enough to trade for Z

#2 The only way you get rid of Wallace is if there is a team out there with a problem just as bad. Maybe Chandler could be had for Ben, but that would be the best you could get, however you would have to throw in JJ hickson and a pick I bet.

#3 Jarvis Hayes is not the answer

#4 I would try and get something for Varejao. He is not the answer. I would give Gortat the full MLE and try and find a team wanting Andy and get some good pieces in return.

#5 I would not cut Sasha, I would just tell him to bring it hard to camp next summer.

#6 I would beg Joe Smith to return and I would give him 20 minutes per game.

As a Clippers fan I'll do this deal yesterday. I was actually coming here to post a Randolph for Wallace deal. What you've done makes a lot of sense for the Cavs and makes a ton of sense for both of the other teams involved.

Also... Toronto would do Pavolic for Kapono... straight up

Pros for Cavs.
-Kapono will get a ton of open 3's from Bron
-Better then Pavolic
-Replace some of ur missing 3point shooting

Cons for Cavs.
-On books for Cavs in 2010 offseason

Attach a future 1st or JJ Hickson ... we'll throw in a small expiring contract (POB)to reduce Marions need of salary via salary cap rules... and make it a decreasing salary contract for Marion, so its a lower cap hit on the Cavs in the 2010 offseason, while more in 2009 offseason which you dont care about.

Thoughts?

Kapono has an absolutely terrible contract, plays the exact same position as LeBron and can't guard anyone. No point in trading for him at all.

Question:

Which mind frame are Cavs thinking, just curious?

1) Improve for the upcoming season via trades, while having to take on 2010 salary
-Improves you more for the coming season
-hurts you in the 2010 offseason abit

2) Hope for internal improvements + MLE, while not having to take on 2010 salary (much)
-Probably lowers how you are able to improve for the coming season
-Possibily increases Lebrons chances of leaving if you dont have a good result next year.
-Keeps 2010 offseason in-tact tho

1. there is nothing wrong with the starting backcourt. i think mo and west have done a lot of great things. you got 2 guys who can handle the ball, play off the ball and shoot the 3. if anything, mike brown needs to trust those guys more and play bron off the ball. one part of me though thinks they are a little TOO SIMILAR. including boobie. they need a guard who will attack the basket a little more. if anything, its the backcourt depth that hurt. wally and sasha blow PERIOD. cavs need a backup guard. we dont need mo and west playing 40 min a game. jannero pargo or josh childress anyone. MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!!!

2. the bigs- Big ben is expiring. tyson chandler is avaiable. lebron shouldnt be leading this team in rebounding and blocked shots. period. just do a camby type deal and be done with it. wallace and 2nd rounder for chandler. andy v had a decent year but he belongs off the bench i wouldnt mind getting haslem. i think riley is gonna wanna play beasley more anyways. yea i know u guys want a low post 20 pt scorer. but i dont see that happening. what you do get is two athletic bigs who run the floor, can rebound and get you more 2nd chance points, boosts your interior d. that pick and pop you ran with z you can still run with haslem, who can knock down that 15 footer

4. like i said, its not necessarily scoring that bron needs help with. its the rebounding, the shot blocking, the geting to the line. lebron had to do way too much. trust in your guards to do more of the ball handling and create for their teammates. lebron doesnt need to do that all the time. let mo get his 6 asssists per game he got in milwaukee

pg- mo
sg- west
sf- james
pf- haslem
c- chandler

bench- pargo(or childress), boobie, joe smith, varejo.
