Are you guys re-signing Bibby?

Post#1 » by bebopdeluxe » Mon Jun 1, 2009 11:59 am

Hey there...Sixers fan here...with our hiring of Eddie Jordan, I am wondering what you guys think the likelihood is Atlanta re-signing Bibby...while Miller had a great year last year, the Princeton offense that Jordan runs is really not Miller's cup of tea - he is more of a traditional PG, while the offense that Jordan runs is more of an equal-opportuninty offense that is more motion and less traditional sets. Right now, I can't think of a PG who knows the offense any better than Bibby (from his days in Sacramento), and he would be a great transition option until the PG we draft this summer is ready to take over.

Like Miller, Bibby really has limited options if he wants more than the MLE - either stay at home or perhaps Portland...I am also not sure about your cap situation...you have other guys to re-sign - yes? And are you guys really thinking about bringing Childress back as well?

If you guys are planning on doing something else at the point, I am just wondering if there are any S&T options that we could do with you guys to bring Miller to Philly (in the likely event that Bibby needs more than the MLE to sign)...

I think that the consensus is that the fans would like to see bibby brought back as long as its for a reasonable contract. 3 years and 25 million seems to be about the breaking point- more than that and I think people are ready for him to go.

S&T's could work. Speights, Young, and Iggy of course would all be very welcome but I'd assume those were off the table. I'd guess there would be some people that would like to see Dalembert in a Hawks uniform. Probably also people who like Louis Williams coming back. But then there will be equal numbers of people who don't want any part of them.

To be completely fair and honest, I think that Sammy - in the right situation - could be a productive big...however, with the hiring of Jordan, I just don't think that Sammy is a good fit for what he is going to be doing offensively. His contract absolutely sucks, however, which makes any kind of transaction involving him difficult. I would be willing to throw in anything - short of the guys you mentioned - to make a deal happen....I would also be willing to take back some bad contract as part of the deal...Claxton's would be a no-brainer, of course...as well as future draft picks (we would ideally like to keep this year's to get Bibby's eventual replacement)...

I am assuming a S&T that would involve Miller would be a non-starter - yes?

The problem is that the Hawks would be doing the Sixers 2 favors in a Dalembert trade- both giving them their starting PG as well as taking an unwanted contract and without the players you mention there just isn't any way to even up that value. Put it htis way- if the Hawks are willing to take Dalembert the sixers would take Claxton, Evans, and Morris no problem- there is no need for the Hawks to put Bibby into the trade. The draft happens before FA starts so there is no way to put the sixers first rounder in there. (though if the sixers take a player the Hawks like the rights could be included) I just don't see where a bibby for dalembert deal would work for the hawks.

I think that if Miller played for the Hawks it would just be for the MLE and there once again wouldn't be a good reason for that to be a S&T.

I completely agree, bro...I fully recognize how bad Dalembert's contract is.

If you guys are committed to re-signing Bibby, there is nothing to talk about here...however, if he wants more money than you guys really want to pay him, I am just trying to figure out S&T options that may make sense for both teams...that way, you get something of value for him.

Louis Williams and Jason Smith for Bibby would let you start him out at 8 million a year. Personally I would do that if I were the hawks but I can't speak to what others here would think of that deal. I think that Williams would be a great fit next to Joe Johnson. Personally I think that bibby is due to regress next season but many here badly want to bring him back so it would likely take more incentive to convince the rest. And thats the problem- the sixers don't have a lot of value on the roster other than Speights, Young, and Iguodala.

I think that Smith - if he has recovered well from surgery - is a really nice guy to have in your rotation...a legit big who can step out to almost 20 feet...nice speed for a big guy (this is where the level of recovery from the surgery is so important)...willing to get his nose dirty under the boards...he has a crappy standing reach, which is one of the reasons why he dropped to #20 in the draft...

To be honest, I think he will thrive in Jordan's offense, but I would rather trade him than Speights.

Williams regressed a bit last season, but he still has big-time talent...one of the only guys on our roster who can score the ball on his own...his toolbox may not translate to the Princeton offense, though...

I think that would be pretty good value for a Bibby S&T.

As another Hawks fan, I would be up for the Louis Williams/Jason Smith combo as well in a S&T trade for Bibby. I'm not sure Williams solves our long term PG need, but he would at least be insurance against losing Flip as scoring threat off bench. We need more bodies in the big man rotation that can actually play so Smith is a worthwhile gamble.

As far as Bibby goes, I have no problem in a 3 year deal for 25M, but that comes with an expectation of drafting a future starting PG and likely trading him in the last year of the deal. I think he keeps us competitive, but won't really help us move further in the playoffs. Trading him for young assets right now probably makes more sense if we can.

I have the feeling re-signing Bibby is the Hawks #1 priority in the off-season. So I 'd say, yes, he'll remain a Hawk unless someone throws a lot more money at him than his normal price tag is.

Smith/Louise Williams sounds like a deal I'd take. Louise is a nice explosive combo and Smith was a decent big before his unfortunate knee injury. I think it works, the sixers get a shooter in Bibby that they need terribly and we get size depth, and insurance for Flip. It also benefits the sixers depth because I believe Dalmembert is simply unmovable and with Brand, Speights and Thad being able to play some 4, Smith is the odd man out in that rotation.
And oh yea, we get to get rid of Bibby
