Full Article

Derrick Rose is a hell of a basketball player.

Over the past four years he’s won two high school state championships, reached the NCAA title game and was named NBA rookie of the year.

Derrick Rose is, by all accounts, a good person.

He’s never gotten into any serious trouble and is known as a quiet, hardworking and unassuming guy. His teammates swear by him and the fans who know him best, in his hometown of Chicago, have flocked to him for the way he’s carried himself on and off the court.

Derrick Rose is the American dream.

Rising from humble South Side roots, at age 20 he’s already a self-made millionaire with the Bulls. Barring injury he should make more than $100 million by the time he’s 35. He’s building a reputation for charity back in his neighborhood.

Derrick Rose isn’t much of a student.

This is what the NCAA alleges. It claims he had someone stand in for him on his SAT because he couldn’t manage to make the relatively meager score he needed to play college ball at Memphis (his qualifying test was a “740 or 750,” according to a source with knowledge of the situation). Then, as the Chicago Sun-Times reported, one of his high school grades was changed from a “D” to a “C” in order to help his college eligibility chances.

For the record, Rose denied all of this to the NCAA although he hasn’t spoken publicly since the allegations broke last week.

The fact we know his score, the fact that Rose is dealing with embarrassing questions, the fact that the NBA has another young star wrapped in scandal and two universities are fretting about Saturday’s NCAA infractions hearing, is the latest testament to the NBA’s wrong and ridiculous 19-year-old age limit.

This isn’t to absolve the people involved, but the question shouldn’t just be did Derrick Rose cheat on his SAT?

It should be why the heck did he have to take it in the first place?

If Rose sang or danced or wrote computer code, even if he hit forehands or curveballs and not free throws, his acumen at standardized questions concerning probability, diction and critical reading wouldn’t matter.

They do in basketball because NBA commissioner David Stern wanted to control long-term labor costs and use college ball to market his young stars. In 2005, his league began requiring American players (but not Europeans) to be at least one year out of high school to be drafted.

That essentially sends them to college ball, where outdated and hypocritical amateurism and academic rules exist not because they have any moral basis, but so the NCAA can avoid billions in local and federal taxes.

As a result, young players have to play pretend before they can play ball. They have to pretend that amateurism rules can stop the wheels of capitalism. They have to pretend that an arbitrary thing like a minimum SAT score – which is never how the test was designed to be used – is a fair hurdle they need to clear to pursue their professional aspirations.

They have to pretend because the NCAA long ago figured out how to use its rule book as a tax haven.

Interestingly, if it is true that he needed a 740-750, that means his GPA was 2.675.

That's not really clear -- but you aren't going to get a whole lot of movement by changing one grade by one letter grade on a four year transcript, so either way, we're still pretty close in the same ballpark.

Naw i wouldn't go that far. I mean i dont listen to 670 score cause i feel most of those guys are morons. But on ESPN 1000 on the afternoon saloon, Yurko was basically saying to give the guy a break and harry was saying the same thing. The everyone has done something dumb when they were in high school. I wouldn't say Rose is dumb or anything, just disinterested. I mean if you have a kid who's a Mathematical genius but is flunking english, would you say he's dumb or just disinterested in the subject? Rose knows and knew his calling was basketball, grant it its not an excuse since there are players that did well academically despite being physicall gifted but i'm still sure playing ball was a distraction to him, not to mention the environment he grew up in. If Rose grew up going to one of the suburban schools, i'm pretty sure his GPA would be higher and this wouldn't be an issue but the level and quality of education at some schools in chicago is very poor.

I just feel this is a non issue just like the whole OJ mayo thing. I mean oh well who cares, I'm pretty sure Rose isn't the only athlete to cheat academically.

Oddly enough, I just went back through all 9 pages of this thread and didn't find a single post suggesting he should be kicked out of the league. Some mentioned his tarnished image, some called him dumb, most criticized the NCAA.

The yahoo article makes it seem like he was heroic, pulling the Kobayashi Maru or something.

9 pages, I'm not going to go back and read them all, so maybe this has been answered already, but...

As far as Derrick Rose's grades or SAT scores, at this point in time, what's the big deal? At least for Rose, anyways? Obviously there's possible punshiment for his high school and maybe Memphis, but Rose is in the NBA now. The worst they could do is invalidate his high school diploma, which is more embarassing than it is detrimental.

Now as someone who puts high value in education and getting your diploma and degree, I feel bad that the kid wasn't bright enough to do it legitly, but as far as playing in the NBA, there's nothing that can be done.

This is just further proof that the NBA needs to alter the rule for being one year removed from high school, and allow kids the choice of college, Europe, or the D-League. It improves the D-League, and it prevents kids from making a mockery of college and the education system. It saves scholarships for kids who actually will use them for the right reasons. It gives those kids NBA coaching and training.

I'm sure this has been touched on, but isn't it absolutely AMAZING how the NCAA only uncovers all of these things right AFTER their meal tickets move on to professional endeavors?

Agreed. What we should instead do is root for the model citizens like Kirk Hinrich and Luol Deng! Even though it's been proven that you can never win much at all with those two, they deserve the support of Bulls fans while the best prospect we've had since Jordan does not. I bet there are some dolts who are still happy that Hinrich and Deng weren't traded for Kobe a few years ago back when they didn't want him. This really is not a big deal at all. We are worried about how Derrick Rose handles himself on the basketball court. I'd be willing to bet that no more than 5-6 people on here have even come within 5 feet of the guy in real life.

Return to Chicago Bulls
