Thoughts on Torre's Yankees Years?

Post#1 » by SpinninHouse » Sun May 31, 2009 12:49 am

I'm curious as to how Yankee fans feel about The Yankee Years. I just finished it and absolutely loved it. I definitely was left with great admiration for Derek Jeter. Anyways I'm curious as to anyone's opinion who read it.

Can you share some of your own thoughts. What does it say about A-Rod?

I enjoyed it for the most part. It gave a lot of insight on the dynasty years' clubhouse: David Cone as the outspoken leader, Jeter led but more by example, and Posada was the clubhouse enforcer.

It was fairly hard on ARod. Of course, there were the quotes about ARod "obsessed" with Jeter, but the only real jab it took was there was a story about how Torre or Sheff told ARod to try to become one of the guys, and Arod apparently told Joe, "Look, I got my own cup of coffee (instead of telling his assistant). Pretty much a Derrick Zoolander moment if that indeed happened.

Also shed Clemens in a somewhat bad light, how he apparently broke down and cried in the locker room after beaming Piazza or throwing the bat at him (can't remember which). How he wasn't always the team guy everyone thought he was.

Made Kevin Brown look like an absolute goon.

Was mad Joe Torre didn't address his use of the bullpen or trusting washed up veterans over young talent.

I'll definitely buy the book now. I needed something to read on my way to work, thanks PR07.
