Racial Issues In NBA Draft And International Forums

Post#1 » by KWSN-Men » Tue Jun 2, 2009 1:08 am

There is a really big amount of discussion about in these forums that "Hispanic" is what people that live in Spain are. Well in MANY Spanish communities that is considered a very racist statement. A lot of people would be offended by that. It would be like the same basically as if someone called all English speaking people "European".

Somehow in the US calling anyone that speaks English "European" would not go over. But yet it is perfectly alright it seems to call anyone that speaks Spanish "Hispanic". Well the problem is that a lot of Spanish people would find this racist. For even pointing this out you get people basically attacking you, calling you stupid, and even some mods jumping all over you.

I would really appreciate it if the site discussed this and put a stop to such racist discussions on these forums.

Hispanic (Spanish: hispano, hispánico) is a term that historically denoted a relationship to the ancient Hispania (geographically coinciding with the Iberian Peninsula). During the modern era, it took on a more limited meaning, relating to the contemporary nation of Spain.

It is considered a RACIST statement by most Spanish people to call them Hispanic. Shall I start calling people by other racist terms as it related to them and then post a wiki link to what it means? I mean I guess that makes it OK.

there has been plethora of Spanish posters in both threads and you are the only one offended by the term. obviously you are trying to make something out of nothing.

The funny thing is, the same poster who is now offended by that term was claiming just a few weeks ago that he is Basque and was offended if someone referred to him as Spaniard.

KWSN-Men,

I asked around about this to get other prespectives and found nothing wrong with the statements.

In my opinion, no one was meaning to offend anyone or used any terms to do so.

Spaniards are racist as hell. Go to a Barcelona game, see what kind of names they call Henry and Eto'o. For added insults, watch for a Mexican/South American; that'll really set 'em off.
