Hill, Scutaro in running for All-Star berths

Post#1 » by LittleOzzy » Wed Jun 3, 2009 2:09 am

Marco Scutaro and Aaron Hill have been pacing the Blue Jays' offense so far, and there is a realistic chance that both players will be named to the American League All-Star team this season. Right now, though, the pair of infielders are slipping in fan balloting for the league's elite squad.

In the second round of voting results, Scutaro ranked fourth among AL shortstops, with 349,922 votes, and Hill was fourth among the league's second basemen, with 388,457. One look at the numbers produced up to this point by Scutaro and Hill -- Toronto's leadoff man and second hitter, respectively -- and it's easy to see why they might deserve more recognition.

"The two guys up front," said Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston, "the first and second hitters, have been getting on pretty much all year."

Entering Tuesday, Scutaro, with a team-leading .408 on-base percentage, ranked second in the AL with 37 walks and 43 runs. The 20 walks he had drawn to open an inning ranked first in the Majors. Among leadoff hitters, Scutaro led the group in walks and was second in runs and doubles (15) and third in hits (64).

Hill should be a given for the ASG.
Scuturo deserves a look, but isn't "sexy" enough.
Roy will be the starter most likely.

any chance BJ Ryan gets a repeat visit? :)

I love Hill, but have you seen the quality of second basemen around the league? It's probably the hottest position at the moment. It's not even close to "a given".

Hill can probably make it,
but Greinke will definitely start over Roy based on stats now
BJ isnt even the closer now, he's not doing much so he definitely wont be in the ASG

Hill is going to have to actually get a hit at some point to make it...

+1. Everyone in Toronto knows how good Hill is, but the fact is that the position is very stacked with talent, including the reigning AL MVP.

In my mind Scutaro's play has been the biggest story of the season for Toronto. He's playing out of his mind and he's absolutely essential to this offense right now. It's amazing to see a player break out like this at the age of 33. He deserves way more credit than he's getting.

That being said I don't think there's any way he gets voted into the ASG. He's frankly a relative no name, and I just don't see him getting the recognition from across the voter base that he'd need.

Once again, this underscores why fans don't deserve the privilege of selecting All Stars, but if Hill or Scut don't make it that doesn't at all diminish their fantastic seasons.

that'd be awesome if both make it... I am hoping for 3 Jays, but it would probably be 2
