Great Hawks Off-Season...
I think these moves would constitute a "great" off-season for the Hawks. Granted, financial realities will probably prevent this scenario from happening, but who knows, anything is possible...
TRADE:
(between Atlanta & the Clippers)
Hawks get:
Chris Kaman
Mardy Collins
Alex Acker
Clipps get:
Acie Law IV
Randolph Morris
Speedy Claxton's contract
#19 pick in the draft
WHY IT COULD WORK FOR THE HAWKS:
Kaman would give the Hawks a true center who is a threat to score in the post. Obviously, health is an issue for Big K, but I think it's a risk worth taking. If he can return to 100%, this would be a real boon for the team.
FREE AGENCY:
Sign Allen Iverson - 3 years/17 million (using the mid-level exception)
why?
I think Iverson would be a great addition to the Hawks. I know a lot of people are down on him, but I think he can still be a strong contributor to a team. He'll be playing with a chip on his shoulder next season, so I expect an up-tick in production. I also think he'd take the MLE since his market value is low and he'd probably come to Atlanta since he owns a home here.
Re-sign Marvin Williams - 5 years/42 million with a player option in year 3
why?
This deal is comparable to what Prince, Wallace, and Granger received. Marvin also gets a player option for 2012 so he could try and get another big contract.
Re-sign Flip Murray - 1 year/league minimum
why?
Flip played great for us this past season but I don't think another team is going to offer a big deal to him. So, I think he takes another 1-year deal and then tries to cash in next summer when the market should be better.
Sign Mikki Moore - 1 year/league minimum
why?
Moore would be a fine backup for Smoove at the 4 spot and can also help at the 5.
Sign Chris Mihm - 1 year/league minimum
why?
More frontcourt depth.
NEW HAWKS ROSTER:
PG-Allen Iverson/Mardy Collins
SG-Joe Johnson/Flip Murray/Alex Acker
SF-Marvin Williams/Mo Evans
PF-Josh Smith/Mikki Moore
C-Al Horford/Chris Kaman/Chris Mihm
-This team is better than the current incarnation. Iverson is more productive than Bibby and Kaman is an upgrade from Zaza off the bench.

I would love to bring Flip back but I figure some team will offer him something better than a minimum deal.

Re: Great Hawks Off-Season...
1st, the trade doesn't work - the salaries aren't close. I guess we could renounce Chills, Bibby, and prolly Zaza as well. But if you add those into the deal, it's obvious that we'd pass. Spending $10+ mil for a backup isn't the best idea I've heard either.
Not sure that I'd say that Marvin's contract would be comparable to either Granger's or Wallace's, but maybe Prince's. Still haven't formed an opinion on this one. The Year 3 option should definitely go to the team though - he hasn't produced enough to warrant a team commitment without the benefit of an out clause.
Looking at the overall team, I'd be p!$$ed if this is what we go into next year with. We all in on AI - there is no fallback plan @ PG even though AI has repeatedly shown that he isn't a PG and has become persona non grata everywhere he's been since he was coached by Larry Brown. The fit between JJ and AI in the back court would be ?-able at best. JJ is the focus of our O right now; AI's strength is dribble penetration - not as a perimeter shooter. I'd give the pairing 1 month before we realize that the combo simply wouldn't work, but we'd be stuck with AI for the balance of 3 years since no one else would take him @ any price. We still have one of the most athletic front courts in the league, but no G to put them in situations to use that athleticism. We have precious little back court depth even though our back court would be one of the oldest in the NBA - both in terms of age and use (AI and JJ both have played a LOT of NBA minutes).
Honestly, I think I'd prefer whatever BK would do with this team over the proposal here...

So, you want to do that trade before the draft? Ugh, that makes it even worse. We can't even trade our 1st next year @ the deadline if we want to get an upgrade @ PG...pja123 wrote:"the trade doesn't work - the salaries aren't close."

I like the idea of trading for Kaman if we use him correctly and limit his minutes to 30mpg. However, you have 10,400,000, 11,300,000 and 12,200,000 coming off our bench and I don't think that's a likely to happen.
Alex Acker has a team option that would need to be accepted, so they make the pick for us and we wait until the trade can be approved.
Another proposal I would be open to is Mardy Collins, Alex Acker and a future 2nd for Acie Law and Randolph Morris.

I am very open to adding Allen Iverson but three years does concern me. He seems to be mentally soft when he's not viewed as the teams first option, so he does throw up some red flags, but I think we can benefit greatly by having him for a couple seasons. The ASG would benefit also because he should be able to draw some bigger crowds IF he's starting.
A team could very well offer Marvin more, but I would be fine with signing him to that contract, and I would hope Coach Woodson realized he needs to have more field goal attempts. If we don't plan on using Marvin correctly we need to just go a different direction because there are cheaper options.
Flip Murray, Chris Mihm and Mikki Moore would all be decent signings to the league minimum. Mikki would probably decide to stay with Boston, but I believe he has family in Atlanta and may live here during the off-season (just another bonus). Chris Mihm presents us with a health risk. Your off-season plan does make us slightly bigger, but maybe not big enough.

Kaman is an upgrade, but a VERY expensive upgrade, and like I mention before I just doubt we plan on having that much money coming off our bench. It locks us up and we'll miss out on future free agents.

As long as he brings something and play 30mpg, I have no problem with that, IMO we should more look at the total salaries of the front court than the fact that a bench player is making 10M or more.
And if some people still don't like it, we can put Horford on the bench, and see his $4,307,640, then $5,444,857 coming from the bench. And with Horford attitude, it can be a good move for the team, he would be the energizer.
Only the last year of Kaman's contract would be a salary problem when Horford new contract will start.

theatlfan- If the Hawks traded their first rounder this year it wouldn't prevent them from trading their first next year at the trading deadline. The only rule is that you can't make a trade that leaves you without a first round pick in any 2 FUTURE years. It doesn't at all matter what happened to your pick in the last draft.

Re: Great Hawks Off-Season...
what do you think of this roster?
BIBBY/MAYNOR/WEST
JJ/FLIP/49TH(Daniel Hackett) OR LAW
MARVIN/EVANS/GARNER
SMITH/Charlie Villanueva /HORFORD
HORFORD/ZAZA/KWAME BROWN
Let Kwame and ZaZa battle for playing time. I like this roster because you can have multiple line ups for ex: Bibby, JJ, Marvin, Smith, Horford or Flip, JJ, Evans, Horford, K Brown or Mayner, Law, Marvin, Villanueva, ZaZa or JJ, Flip, Villenueva, Smith, Horford or Bibby, Flip, JJ, Villanueva, Smith or JJ, Marvin, Smith, Horford, ZaZa.
ok don't laugh at that last two to bad. Just having fun. but you get my point the different combo's we could through out on the court would be almost endless.

Are you saying sign Kwame for the minimum, then split the mle between charlie v and flip?

Kwame brown is not going to decline a 4 million dollar PO just to accept part of the mle from the hawks.

Re: Great Hawks Off-Season...
A rotation of Horford/Smoove/Kaman at the 4 and 5 would be wonderful.
The trade would give us numerous possible combinations. We could go big, with Kaman at center, Horford at PF, Smoove at SF, - think about this; don't laugh - Marvelous at SG and Joe at point. We could go fast, with Smoove/Horford at center, Marvelous at PF, and Joe/Mo/Flip in the backcourt. And we could go with any number of combinations inbetween.

Re: Great Hawks Off-Season...
I think it would sweet to get Kaman for a deal like that. If you limit his minutes, he'd probably stay off IR for the most part. He'd likely be a more effective option than Zaza at the same role. And perhaps we can resign Zaza with the MLE in order to have more depth. The one question I have is does it preclude us from resigning Bibby. Not that I'm set on him at PG, I just don't see many better options.

Re: Great Hawks Off-Season...
i think marvin has a problem guarding most small 2 guards and he doesn't have the technique down to punish 2 guards on the block. also, joe is best when he isn't trying to facillitate the offense.
it would be a good rotation to use maybe for a short period of time in the game but i don't see much out of it.
going to the offseason plan, i think that iverson at this point is a downgrade from bibby. they both dont play enough defense, and at least bibby already knows his role on the team and will get better with more practice in it.
the kaman deal scares me because of his contract. there have to be better people to get that aren't worth that amount. it's contracts like his that screw teams up. i'm just glad the hawks don't have one that bad.

We don't need to sign Zaza with the MLE, we have his Bird rights, and it's the same for Bibby. So we would be able to re-sign both of them, and use the MLE.
The only limit would be the salaries total the owners agree to pay.

On the other side, that's why this deal seems possible. If it was for a better option than Kaman, it would certainly cost more than that.
I agree it's a risky option though.
