He doesn't have to pace himself coming out of the bullpen. His stuff looked awesome that inning.

I understand that, but boy, I am not used to seeing him up there... 93-94, yea, but 96 and it seemed to have more pop than that...

After that homer by Jeter, one of the Rays announcers was like, "That's a joke...little league ballpark...that's a high cutter. Good pitch..." in frustration.

It's not hard for good starters to perform well out of the bullpen, or increase their velocity while doing so. That's what's infuriating about the Joba nonsense: there's no special quality that makes any particular pitcher great in a pen role. Like Phil, Joba's simply overqualified to be a reliever, and will continue to be overqualified until it's actually proven he's incapable of starting.

yea, but how many of those shots jeter put out of just about any park? it was a high pitch in the zone and jeter hit it well.. that ball leaves a lot of parks..

It seemed like Girardi wanted to use today as Hughes' throw day in a sense, just in case he needs him for 3-4 innings if Wang flops again on Wednesday. Then if that happens, we gotta throw Phil back in the rotation. Forget this bullpen crap, even Wang was looking good in the pen.

Yeah, that's my guess to. Girardi is probably saving Hughes in case Wang bombs and the team needs someone to eat innings, as he'll probably use Aceves in more of a setup man role in the Boston series. Hopefully, we can win handedly tomorrow, with Mo being unavailable.

Hughes looked sharp out of the pen. Any kind of pitcher with the kind of stuff he has is going to look better out of the pen. Sabathia would probably throw 98 out of the pen, but that doesn't mean that's where he belongs.
