Griz have been approached by several teams about 2nd pk

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Tue Jun 9, 2009 2:44 pm

Meanwhile, the Griz still are entertaining offers for the No. 2 pick as well as their 27th and 36th selections.

As the rumor mill churns, the Griz have been approached by several teams about acquiring the second overall pick. Boston, Houston and New York are said to be among the most recent suitors.

Boston and Houston would likely have to offer an established NBA player or two, given that neither team owns a first-round pick. New York owns the eighth pick and likely would want to move up for the opportunity to take Rubio. Link

If Sund is pursing the 2nd overall pick it's hush-hush.

I would love to hear what Memphis is looking for out of the pick(s).

The New York deal that makes the most sense to me is this:
#8, Chandler and a future pick (complicated due to NY already owing a future pick) for the #2. The draft would be a draft night trade after the picks are made to fit the NBA rules better. An expansion of the deal would possibly be to take on Darko while sending back Duhon. The combined moves with save Memphis several million although it isn't that likely since they must spend a certain minimum amount anyway.

Also although he's from nearby Arkansas, I can't see Joe as a fit with Memphis (given their roster) and that's why I didn't consider us to be good candidates to trade with Memphis. He'd most likely leave after the one year. Josh can't be traded there until August. And trading Al would create a hole probably bigger than the pick itself would fill. Although it would possibly be an interesting reshaping of the team if we did. Assuming we took Rubio, we'd need to have a firm plan to fill the C position like an all out press to sign Gortat and make him the starter or another trade later in the summer to land a starting C. Rubio and a deal for someone like Dalembert is interesting because the change in offensive style would mask a lot of Sam's offensive shortcomings. If we drafted Thabeet and resigned Zaza (Thabeet isn't ready to start), we'd be different at C, but not necessary better for quite some time in spite of the height injection. Thabeet draws a range of opinions on whether he'll develop into a player. I'd expect other moves to accompany it as well to focus on this down the road scenario.

I wouldn't expect anything to involve us unless Sund is completely in love with one of those 2 prospects. If that's the case he's wisely played it close to his vest.

I just can't see what those teams would give up.

What does NY have. The #8 and that is about it. They wouldn't take on Jaric's bad deal and hurt their Lebron chances.
Boston? Would Memphis want Rondo when they have Conley? Big Baby might work, but he is a rfa. Perkins?
Houston? They do have Brooks, but once again it is the pg situation with memphis.

It just seems improbable that those teams would be willing to put together a nice enough package to move up the 2.

We should be able to beat any offers by Boston, New York and Houston. If the ASG and Sund are willing to move Al Horford we should be able to acquire the 2nd overall pick. Al, 19th for the 2nd and 27th could very well get it done.

Horford is likely forever better than the second; surely better for the next couple of seasons. #19 gets you Hansbrough or a decent PG. #29 gets you a Soloman Jones type.

Bad trade for the Hawks.

Horford / #19 for Gazol / #2 gets closer to fair.

Why would Memphis trade Gasol? They need a 4 so I doubt they plan on filling a void to only open another one up. I would take the chance on a point guard that has the potential to be one of the leagues best and possibly a future hall of famer. The young man has stardom written all over him.

The Grizzlies could draft Jordan Hill to get a PF. I assume they are looking for an offer they can't refuse. As I said earlier "trading Al would create a hole probably bigger than the pick itself would fill." Getting Gasol in the deal would be a steal for us.

Sure. The value of Horford and Gasol are closer than some people think, at least more close than the difference between pick 2 and 19. Add that Gasol is under contract for one more year, with a lower salary, and I am not even sure that MEM would trade him for Horford.
