No luxury box freebies for fans

When the Blue Jays trot onto the Rogers Centre field to play the Florida Marlins tonight, some of the teams' wealthiest fans won't be there. Nor are they likely to show up tomorrow or Sunday.

Though they've paid thousands to lease some of the 133 luxury suites ringing the downtown dome, by Friday, Toronto's corporate crowd is often too pooped to root, root, root for the home team after glad-handing clients all week.

That means some of the pricey private playpens – which cost $3,500 to rent for a single game, not including food, drinks and hostess – are vacant.

"Monday to Thursday is the meat of the batting order, so to speak – that's when the corporate community likes to entertain," said Jason Diplock, the Jays' vice-president of ticket sales and service.

Has anyone sat in a box at a Jays game? What's it like?

I have been in a box at the ACC and they are great.

It's such a waste eh?

I've never been in a box at the Skydome but I did get to try one at the Corel Centre (or whatever the hell it's called now) in Ottawa a few years back. It truly is luxurious, but I think you lose part of the traditional experience when you're separated from the general fanbase.

Pro sports will eventually be eaten up by big business.

once you go box, you never want to go back.
you don't have cramped seats. you don't have idiots getting up in front of you in the middle of an inning.
so many "you don't"s.
and if you get a box with free food and booze, it really is a great time.

been to Leafs, Raptors and Rock games in a box. its this exhorbiant, fantasy world.
