Low cost backup SG answer?

Post#1 » by JMillott » Sat Jun 13, 2009 2:52 am

I think the time for Tony Allen to be a Celtic has run its course and although I think if given the chance that Giddens can in fact handle the role you still have to bring in a second guy to compete with for the job.

So what about Shannon Brown? This kid is athletic as hell, has the size and plays defense much like a healthy Tony Allen himself. He has all the flavor of an Ainge favorite as a former near top of his high school class prospect as well.

He also obviously has a good work ethic as both Larry Brown and Phil Jackson have both spoken highly of him. Not to mention he likely benefited from practicing against Kobe the last few months of this season.

I wouldn't mind seeing us take a look at him next year in place of Gabe Pruitt being brought back.

With hi play in the playoffs, I doubt we'd have the $$$ to get him while still adding a solid big man. Its also not SG depth, we need a back up for Pierce.

I think we're very likely to enter next season with Walker and Giddens as the backup SF's.

I think the most likely way to improve the wings is to flat out trade Ray Allen going after either Harden in the draft or Vince Carter while picking up the Nets #11 pick or the owed Mavs pick in 2010.

I think its always a bad idea to get a guy who played in the finals that year. They almost always get over valued

House, Tony, and Giddens are pretty low cost. We should concentrate on our true positions of need, the 1, 3 and the 5.

I think our actual positions of need are the 2, 4 and the 5 in that order personally. I also think Ray Allen is gone by the end of draft night.

We can and in my opinion likely will retain Marbury and House as the backup PG's. I don't think Danny is ready to write off his Marbury move yet since he didn't cause problems and clearly still has more upside then any other comparable cost pickup. I wouldn't be shocked if they gave Marbury a House type contract with a player option on the second year.

I think we brought back Tony Allen last year simply because he was a Doc Rivers favorite but I think that ship has sailed for Doc now and he'll be moved as an expiring unless we deal Ray Allen for Harden. If we deal Ray for Harden i'd expect them to bring back Tony Allen just to have a SG that already knows the system for Harden to have to win the job from.

If we don't deal Ray Allen for Harden i'm expecting us to deal him to the Nets for Vince Carter and perhaps the Nets lottery pick with filler.

I fully expect Glen Davis to be a gooner and while I expect us to keep Leon Powe it won't be until around the allstar break that we'll see him. As such I fully expect us to go after a proven quality veteran PF like Rasheed Wallace or Antonio McDyess who can play with either the Perkins or Garnett. I think he'll put the MLE behind one of these guys but try and deal Scalibrine, Pruitt and Tony Allen for them via sign and trade so he can keep the MLE open during the year just in-case and to open up roster spots.

I just don't see Danny Ainge being ready to cash out on Walker, Giddens or Marbury when he still has no reason to think that they won't bare fruitt. I also don't see Danny stacking the deck against these guys or giving Doc a valid reason to bury them on his bench. I still think Danny believes that he has at least one if not two homerun values tied up in Giddens and Walker for three more years under minimal salary.

Where he gambled on youth behind Perkins and Garnett the last two years with Davis and Powe i'm thinking he'll gamble on youth behind Pierce who has been the most durable of the Celtics and with the understanding that if something happens to Pierce we're screwed anyway and might as well develop Walker and Giddens in that event.

Last but not least I think Danny believes Perkins to be ready for extended minutes. Perkins has extended his role by about 4 minutes a game over the pasr two years, I expect him to do so again getting up in the 31-34 range while averaging his first double double next year at around 11/10/3 and finally cleaning up his ball handling

I think he showed how much his game has matured both down the stretch and in the playoffs without KG or Powe around. He anchored what was still an effective defense when he was on the floor and played more consistently offensively with increased touches in the post routinely getting a quality shot up.

It wouldn't shock me to see him have a 15/11 month or two next year. I think alot of people overlook that Perk still has a decent ceiling in front of him that he hasn't reached yet. He is also starting to get that veteran respect from the refs that will help keep down his foul troubles.

I'd be shocked if Ray is gone.

KG has maybe 1-2 good years left in him. You can' t waste those trying to develop a rookie SG.

I'd also be surprised if Baby doesn't re-sign. He's a limited player who has figured out a good role here. Especially with Powe out next season (he may come back midseason but he's not going to be 100%), again I'm not sure we can afford to bring in some yougnster and develop him. I do think we will try to add a vet PF, like a Sheed or Dice ideally. That would give us a solid 4-man big rotation.

I think we need a SF with size more than a SG. I agree that the TA experiment is dead; it's too bad, when he stays healthy and gets in a rhythm he's pretty good, but he never can stay healthy. But I also think House at SG just doesn't work long term. We need a real backup PG. I don't think Marbury is the answer, tho if we can't find anyone else he might have to be. I hope not tho, I think there are a number of vet PGs who would be better.

Rashad McCants is a guy I'd keep an eye on this offseason. A guy who's a bit under the radar and could end up being the steal of free agency.

Kid can flatout score and has one of those freakish wingspans that Ainge gets hot for. I can't help but think that Minnesota kinda mind****ed him... jerking him around positionally, trying to forcefeed him the starting PG gig... Definitely fits the bill as a "just needs a change of scenery" candidate.

I know people like to get hung up on our needs positionally but our bench scoring doesnt need to come from the 3 spot to get Pierce some rest. We don't necessarily need a Posey clone here.
