backup roles

Post#1 » by Papa Irish31 » Sat Jun 13, 2009 4:35 am

i dont think a trade will happen this offseason involving one of the C's starters, i believe that the moves danny has to make will be primarily ones to fill our three needs off the bench; backup pg, wing, and center

the question i have is, which of these needs do you think danny will most adequately meet?

that is which one of these positions do you think you will be most and least confident with come fall?

also where would you have danny fill in these needs (free agency, trades, draft)

my answers would be: i think i will be most confident with the backup point guard spot simply because this is the spot where danny has the most solid options (steph, point heavy draft, solid free agents), and it happens to be the least important of the three

i think i will end up least confident in the backup center spot; it is quite the opposite of the point guard role because we desperately need at least one more guy with size coming off the bench and there are the least amount of reliable options out of the three positions. I think it will most likely end up with danny having to settle for a tall power forward, or a project center through free agency (swfit) or the draft (heytfelt, suton) or at the very least getting a veteran stiff (foyle, collins, booth, mihm)

I'd like to get Nocioni, that way we can go small and easily match up with 'Lando. I'd also like to see us get a back up for Ray, someone like Willie Green. Steph needs to come back, if he wants a ring, this is the best place to do it. I also wanna see him and KG reunite on the court (I don't think they did this year).

All three if Ainge can pull-off a coup. I'll like to know if free agents Anthony Parker and Jannero Pargo are real possibilities. But, apparently, New Orleans would like to have him back. Matt Barnes could be an option at small forward, if Ainge and Rivers aren't convinced Walker's enough.

Little to no good options at a backup center in free agency unless you trade for one. A tall order. If you trade, Camby's the most logical choice, in my opinion. An expiring contract, and the Clippers need to move a big man to make room for Griffin. But, word is he's versatile enough to play small forward.

The agent for former New Orleans Hornets guard Jannero Pargo, a free agent, continues to speak with the Hornets about a possible return to the team.

"Jeff (Bower, Hornets general manager) and I spoke (Tuesday) about a bunch of things and Jannero was something we discussed and we'll take it a step at a time and see where it goes," Mark Bartelstein said. "There's nothing new to talk about now, but we'll look at it and see what happens.

"I think you could say there's mutual interest. That's fair to say."

Pargo, despite an offer from the Hornets last summer, signed instead with Dynamo Moscow, a one-year deal worth $3.8 million in the Russian Super League.

Pargo secured a buyout from Dynamo Moscow in January and eventually ended up with Olympiacos in the Greek League of Euroleague basketball. He was released by Olympiacos on May 5. Pargo, who averaged 3.5 points and 1.4 assists in Euroleague play, is currently recovering from sports hernia surgery performed about two weeks ago.

"I think there's a lot of people interested," Bartelstein said. "He's healthy now; had the surgery about 10 days ago. He feels great and is now 100 percent healthy. We're just going to take a deep breath and digest everything and figure out what's best.

"Olympiacos has also expressed interest that they'd want him back. We've talked about that. There are a lot of things for him to consider."

Pargo is currently free to negotiate with any NBA team because he's coming from the European league. A free agent with an NBA team must wait until July 1 to begin negotiating for next year.

The Celtics are somewhat constrained because they don't have salary to trade.

IF they had signed James Posey during the SUMMER OF 2007, yes, 2007, to a 3 year full MLE deal it would have cost them $2.1 million more during 2008, plus $2.1 million in luxury tax, plus his 2009 salary of $5.3 million, plus luxury tax of $5.3 million. So, to put $14.8 million in the owners pockets, and probably correctly so, the price they pay is having few tradeable contracts of any dollar value.

The starters are not going anywhere. Leon will probably sign for the qualifying offer of just over $1 million, or maybe they give him a 2 year deal for a little more that he signs for the guaranteed second season. Leon won't be part of a sign and trade till the little guy proves he still has it, in which case the Celtics will probably keep him around.

If Eddie House exercises his option for $2.85 million he can be traded, but he also has a 7.5% trade kicker that would boost his salary to any team he was traded to.

So, it all comes down to Brian Scalabrine, Tony Allen, Pruitt, maybe Giddens or Walker; and a host of unrenounced players like Michael Olowokandi that could be added to a deal to help make the numbers work, but only for the vet minimum in almost all cases.

Most of the available bigs are not true centers, but PF's or PF/C's. The Celtics need someone who can be a full time backup C. They are stretching themselves thin with Powe not available initially and KG and Perk question marks.

The Unrestricted Free Agent options are, if they can't get paid more than the full MLE, sign wherever the hell they feel like!!!: These guys are the Celtics best shot.

C: Rasho Nesterovic, age 33, around 7', shot to 16 feet, slow
C: ZaZa Pachulia (limited skills, but has the size required)
PF/C: Antonio McDyess will be 35 in September, 6' 9.5" height w/o shoes
PF/C: Rasheed Wallace 34, shot, volatile, 6' 9.75" height w/o shoes
(Rasheed is asking for $8 million, probably not worth more than the full MLE)
PF: Joe Smith (not a C, so forget about him)

The Restricted Free Agent Options (which will require Sign & Trade since
Current Teams can simply match contract) Are:

C: Marcin Gortat, 6' 11" height w/o shoes, (will get full MLE for sure, maybe more)
PF: Charlie Villanueva 6' 9" height w/o shoes, but not a banger, decent shot

Guys who are unhappy who can probably be traded for cheap:

C: Marcus Camby, 35 years old, 6' 11" height w/o shoes, skinny, injury prone,
great rebounder/defender

For a full sized SF, if the Celtics can't persuade Grant Hill to come on board, well,
then they are SOOL.

The PG I think Danny wants to bring Marbury back, and bring in a guy from the draft by trading up or buying a pick. The thing is, if they use the full MLE on a big, and the LLE on Grant Hill, Marbury is going to want more than minimum.

That's why I think the key to the Celtics off season is doing a sign and trade for their C or SF.
Larry Bird, in Indiana, could accomodate Danny for Nesterovic.
Scott Skiles owes Danny for recommending him years ago, and might accomodate a Charlie Villanueva sign and trade.

There are teams where the Celtics could dump a body in a sign and trade for a big, like Memphis and Oklahoma City, who could take Tony Allen say, or Sacramento, who might take Gabe Pruitt, with a player that team takes in this year's draft going to the team sending the Big to the Celtics.

They have to get the big. They can get one with the full MLE, if one wants to come.

They can get the point guard behind Marbury by trading up in the draft.

To get a full sized C, a full sized SF, and have enough money to keep Steph happy (even if they buy a pick in the draft); they have to do a sign and trade to get all 3 to dump salary, make room on the roster, and have enough money to use the full MLE, LLE, and the Sign and Trade to add a C, SF and Marbury.
