L.A. city officials could rain on Lakers parade

Post#1 » by dockingsched » Sat Jun 13, 2009 5:55 pm

If the Lakers win the NBA championship this coming week, it's a good bet Angelenos will want a parade.

But with cash-strapped Los Angeles looking at the possibility of laying off municipal workers or forcing them to take unpaid days off to counter a budget deficit, some at City Hall are uncomfortable with the parade's price tag, which could exceed $1 million.

"We can't afford to cover the costs," Los Angeles City Councilwoman Jan Perry, whose district includes Staples Center, said Friday afternoon. "How could we make a decision about people's jobs and then sponsor the parade?"

Shouldn't the Lakers and the NBA pay for that, she asked?

....

"City employees have been asked by their employers to take a massive pay cut," said Barbara Maynard, spokeswoman for the Coalition of L.A. City Unions, which represents roughly 22,000 workers. "And we do not believe it is appropriate in this economic climate for taxpayers to be funding a parade."

I think that's true. I expect Kobe to probably throw it himself. I would honestly not be surprised at all. Can you say legacy booster?

Wow, i didn't know the city was the one that usually paid for this event. I thought it was the franchise that would do it. Knowing for sure now that there's most likely going to be some kind of riot of some sorts, if it becomes bad.. the city can very well use that cost as an excuse not to have the parade.

I hope there's one.. or the team can at least sponsor for their adoring fans hehe

Of course... we could just not win at all, and not have a parade.

jk.

The city shouldn't have to pay, gotta figure out a way to do it.

The Lakers need to tell the City its the second Cinco De Mayo this year. They will have no problem with that.

No parade. Lakers pay for Coliseum usage and police OT (just guessing 500k), city/Coliseum commission donates the staffing required for the event (will be breakeven after consessions profit and parking), 80000 Lakers fans show up for the celebration at $20 a head (very reasonable) - with all 1.6 mil proceeds going to LAUSD (to save a bunch of teacher jobs).

Have authorized nba stores outside selling T-shirts, jerseys, water bottles, flags, balloons, beer, etc and take commission for everything that the thousands of people will be buying during the parade. Then restrict selling of unauthorized sellers (cops will be there anyway might as well have them do more than just stand around preventing riots). Have a special lottery that gives away bunch of signed jerseys, basketballs, etc by selling tickets. I'm sure Gasol and Kobe won't mind signing a few things to pay for their parade. If there are any unnecessary expenses that laker's franchise would like the city to do, then they will have to pay for atleast half the cost.
