Re: Yiannis Bouroussis
It is reported in Greece by what is considered the Olympiacos main team paper that it is most likely that Bourousis will play with the Spurs next year. As long as the Spurs keep their offer to him when they are able to make the official offer it is likely he will play in San Antonio next year.
The Olympiacos owners are investing 75 million more euros into the soccer club next year and they are not happy with Bourousis' demands. In fact the paper is pessimistic that they can even keep Bourousis and the "next meeting" has not even occurred. They will have another meeting next week but it seems that basically at the moment Bourousis is going to San Antonio. The club is already supposedly talking to replacement free agents.
All I can say is that all the NBA only fans in San Antonio better stop bashing this guy if he comes to the NBA. This guy is hard core. You don't bash him. If you do he will probably find you at the game.

Re: Yiannis Bouroussis
If he brings the goods i'm sure the bashing will stop pretty quick. He sounds like a pretty decent prospect, it's just that we are watching our dynasty slowly come apart and we have spent most of our time looking at proven NBA prospects to try and put us back on top.
However thats not to say we are not interested in a player of his calibre, just we are cautious because we are teetering on the edge of success and rebuilding and want to make the right move for our short time frame.

I am not nationalistic. However, there are some nationalistic fans in this thread. Just read some of the posts in this thread. I mean come on.
BTW, not only did the Olympiacos main paper report it, but the main Greek online sports media did also. It's like Greece's ESPN.com. This report doesn't give all the info about the soccer club and everything but it is nonetheless an online confirmation of what the paper stated.

I am not nationalistic. Nationalistic is insisting that any player that is not in the NBA sucks or if he was "any good" he would "already be in the NBA".

Guys the Spurs dynasty is built on international players. Your main stars are international, so show some trust, not only to Yiannis, but also on the teams management. Yiannis is not the new messiah, but he is not scrap either. If the teams health of the team is there, he can be an important part for an other title run.

Re: Yiannis Bouroussis
But there is that unease of an untested player, just like we would have if we drafted a new rookie player only that it doesn't cost us part of our MLE, which is all that we have to get proven NBA level talent.
We aren't being disrespectful by saying that he CAN'T be good becuase he's not here, we are saying that if we had the choice to go with a proven NBA level player where we know what we are getting or a Euro star that could go either way in the NBA we'd probably go with the NBA player.
2 years ago we probably would have jumped on the chance to bring over some brand new talent when we had some room for error. But we only have 2-3 seasons left before we seriously consider rebuilding, and we want to make sure all of our rolls of the dice are well thought out ones, becuase we probably won't get a second chance.
LA is looking great, Orlando will re-tool and come back stronger, Cleveland just need another scorer and they'll be great odds to win it all, Boston will have KG back and Rondo on the cusp of an all-star berth Denver and Portland are 2 great teams that can only go up. The league is a much more dangerous place and we need to make all the right choices to keep up.

If you find better player with the same money, then its dumb to pay Yiannis. Still its a big ''IF''

He's staying at OLY getting (with bonuses) about 2 million Euro per year. No clue yet on contract length.

Ha has landed in a place where he's the most important starter, get's MASSIVE support (you've got to visit Greek arenas to witness and understand it), feels at home and earns A LOT of cash. Now tell me, why would he throw it away for 2-3 mil? Just because it's NBA? 3 mil before tax is laughable for a player of his caliber, he's getting around or more than that (depending on Euro/USD value) already and it is NET. The good old times where you could pick any Euro player and convince him to play for minimum "cause it's the NBA, dude" are long gone.
Any reasonable center in the NBA earns in double digits and I don't believe he'll ever agree to less then that. Not if he has any respect for himself, and he's got tons of that.
No, I'm not Olympiacos fan, I'm not even Greek.

Re: Yiannis Bouroussis
Yeah well we have seen plenty of examples where Euro's have come over highly recommended and really been nothing special, especially bigs.
I remember reading Darko was supposed to be a white KG or something....umm...yeah he took a wrong turn somewhere there didn't he.
The only Euro bigs that have really shone as 10+mil a year talents have been Gasol, Dirk, maybe Big Z.
If Bargs keeps improving at the rate he is than maybe him to.
Please add any others if you think i've missed a couple.
The Euro track record has been hit and miss so there is no way any GM will pay 10+ mil for a player that has never played an NBA game, its the way things work in the NBA, first you prove yourself in the league, then your ass gets paid, if he doesn't want to the play the game that way then he can stay over in Europe.

Re: Yiannis Bouroussis
Well if that's the case, there are 30 NBA teams. If he's really worth 4-5 mil, I think there's atleast one smart team out there that would give him that money.
My guess is, no team is dumb enough to give him that money.
