Draft Workouts Begin

Post#1 » by babyjax13 » Sat Jun 13, 2009 5:33 pm

Tyler Hansbrough leads a list of twelve draft prospects that will work out for the Jazz on Monday.

Villanova forward Dante Cunningham, Pitt guard LeVance Fields, Southern Cal forward Taj Gibson, Arizona forward Jeff Pendergraph and Boston College guard Tyrese Rice will join Hansbrough on Monday morning.

In the afternoon session, Utah State forward Gary Wilkinson will work out with Wisconsin forward Marcus Landry, Georgia Tech forward Gani Lawal, Washington State guard Taylor Rochestie, Baylor forward Kevin Rogers and North Dakota State guard Ben Woodside.

I hope we grab Cunningham or Pendergraph in the second round--I could really care less about Hansbrough and Lawal. I hope this doesn't mean we are going power forward in the draft, I don't want Fess and Koufos loosing minutes--plus we have AK if we need someone to play power forward behind Millsap/Boozer.

Hansbrough seems like he'd be a good fit for us at backup 4. Probably from day #1. Would certainly be nice to have if Boozer bolts.

I can see why the Jazz would have interest.

Eh, not the biggest fan of psycho-T but I doubt he will fall to us anyways. Still hoping for Sam Young in the first round.

I have such mixed feelings on Hansbrough. There is no doubt that he has the fire and the will to win games, and having winners on your team matters big time. The only way to win is to have good team chemistry and it seems like Hansbrough is a winner every where he goes. Obviously his hustle would be a huge plus, it'd be nice to have that kind of emotion on the floor every night.

I also worry though about whether or not he has the skill to be a legit rotation guy in the NBA game, and if he can maintain that fire for 82+ games instead of just over 30 like in College.

It would be a very interesting pick up for the Jazz.

If brass' not crazy there's only one way for Boozer to stay in a Jazz uni next season: to pick his option.

I don't mind if we draft Hansbrough, but in a draft that is this point guard heavy, and for a team that needs a backup to a guy like Deron, I see no reason not to go for one. If we can get another first (maybe the 21 or 24) then I am OK with draft Hansbrough and then picking up a guy like Patrick Mills, Tony Douglas, or Sergio Llull--but I'd rather go with a guy like Maynor or Teague and then see who is there in the second round.

Tyrese Rice would make a good target to go after in second round. Nba Draft .net compares him to Mo Williams.

The thing I don't like about Hansbrough is his .4 shots block per game. Hansbrough might really be abuse on the defence end in the Nba . I prefer adding another early second round pick and getting Pendergraph. I still have hopes we will resign Boozer and also keep Milsap. Pendergraph would make a good backup to Boozer and Milsap plus play some center . Pendergraph could play a role like Collins for the jazz.

I believe I read somewhere Calathes exerciced some clause out of his contract; may be I read it wrong. Anyway, talent wise, Calathes is second only to Holiday in my wish list; I envision kind of a richer Hinrich in him; huge talent. The fact he was (or is) going to Europe put Teague higher than him in my eyes, but man, would be great to draft NC even if we have to wait a season or two to buy him out of Europe.

Gibson's problem is that he weighs 215. Think the black AK.

I think Taj might have pulled out of the draft. In the second round he could be a good pick, but in the first round he is a big reach.

Gani Lawal withdrew, so he was not at the workouts.

^^^ bummer too. He definitely intrigued me.

Read this about Omri Casspi from Draftexpress:
"“Austin Daye vs. Omri Casspi turned into a real wrestling match. Casspi just manhandled Daye, really threw him around. It was a bit disappointing to see how little Daye was able to compete from a strength perspective—Casspi is a kind of a skinny guy himself. At one point Casspi cut Daye’s lip open--he had to go to hospital for stitches. The Nets should have done a better job of getting someone to call fouls. Casspi was fouling the hell out of Daye. Some of the guys were looking at each other like ‘what are we watching here?’

Casspi was impressive, just like he’s been everywhere he’s gone. He plays hard, competes. He hit tough shots. Step-backs, runners. Then he missed some wide open J’s—go figure. He hits the toughest shots, but can’t always make the easiest ones. He looked like he could be a great complementary player in a 5 on 5. Definitely an atypical player for a European. “

He has intrigued me for awhile. Had been compared to Andres Nocioni and our own Fat Matt Harpring. Maybe so?

I don't know much about Caspi, but that is sort of dissapointing that Daye, a "lottery talent" (who I really like) would be abused by a guy that is supposed to be a late first/early second round pick.

What do you all think of Luke Harangody in the second round? He has gotten into better shape than he was at Notre Dame and I think he could be a good pickup in the second round (and fill the requirement for Utah's "pasty white guy").

I watched Maccabi Tel Aviv a couple times. What Casspi has in common with Harpring is certainly toughness; don't sure if he has Harp's composure though...
Casspi is more of an instinctively physical, kind of "rude" player, even if he's skinny by NBA or even Euroleague standards.
Talent wise, tools wise, have he played college basketball, he certainly would be in at least mid lottery talking. The guy intrigues me too; I think Sloan would love his harshness... not sure about some sort of indolent assertiveness the dude seems to have...

^ Sloan wants someone with thats nasty . . . and frankly he is right. We have Deron Williams and a bunch of pu****s. I am intrigued. Most definitely intrigued. Not sure if he fits any sort of "need" though. Outside of Hasheem Thabeet, I am not sure anyone in the draft "fits a need".

Also babyjax Harangody is going back to school according to DraftExpress. Plus, I am not a fan. He is a hobo's Scalabrani
