Per Dunk, that didn't happen here ...but I clearly recall the situation (but not the player) where that has occurred in the past. Why the team does it is to get more time to make a decision. Why the player does it is to keep from getting cut immediately from the team being pushed into a corner.

The most recent one I can recall is the Lakers & Vlade Divac, at the very end of his career.

So it hasn't happened with O'Bryant?

Dunno. Haven't been following his situation. Don't take "the most recent one I can recall" to imply that it hasn't happened since the last one I -do- recall.

That was more of a general question, really. I was wondering if anybody did know.

Near the end of the 07-08 season Denver signed Bobby Jones to a two-year contract. The guarantee date for the second year was in July right after the summer league. He agreed to move it to August 15. On July 28 he was traded to NY with Taurean Green for Balkman. NY waived him the next day. Miami picked him up off waivers but then waived him on August 15 so that they wouldn't have to pay his guarantee.

That's the way I remember it Sham (with some help from Wikipedia).

Thinking about it, I'm referring to the year before - the Nuggets acquired Jones in the 2007 offseason and then waived him before January 10th 2008, when the contract he initially signed with the Sixers called for a full guarantee if he was on the roster on October 1st 2007 ($200,000 if he wasn't). I remember reading something that said he agreed to get more guaranteed money in exchange for pushing the date back, but I can't actually find the bastard right now. Will keep looking.

Aha, I found the little tease.

Since Jones wasn't waived until January 7th 2008, they either amended it again, or the report was wrong a bit. But it seems resolute in saying that the amount of guarantee was changed.

Could O'Bryant's contract have guaranteed him *nothing* in the second year if he was waived before the end of the season, but a $500k partial guarantee if he made it 48 hours past this season's last game with Toronto?

That might explain Patrick not wanting to give up a benefit as well as Coangelo's assumptions about Patrick's cap number.

Poor Patrick. I feel bad for him. Soon he will be able to get back to his baking though...
