The next stage of the master plan

Post#1 » by Ex-hippie » Tue Jun 16, 2009 8:12 pm

The Broncos organization continues to devolve into a laughingstock. I can practically taste the top-5 pick. Now somebody needs to persuade Knowshown Moreno to hold out and Champ Bailey to decide he needs to be traded to a contender for what's left of his productive years. The plan is almost complete.

This is going to make for a great sideshow this season. To me, it's the pick that lands us McCoy or Bradford, our QB of the future. And besides that, it's Denver.

Yeah, I think this will be a great year for the our side-story draft agenda. It's nice to know you can compete and win and still end up with a great pick at the end of the year. I'm still shocked we got that pick.

A blurb on the trade with Denver:

The Broncos want to see second-round pick Alphonso Smith take command of the nickel cornerback job. The team sent its first-round pick in next year's draft to Seattle to acquire Smith with the No. 37 pick. He failed to solidify the nickel spot in the offseason, battling with second-year player Jack Williams for the job. Expect the playmaking Smith to pull away from Williams as camp marches on.

This was one of those moves where I'm surprised the team I root for wasn't stuck on the wrong end. Unbelievable steal for the Hawks...

According to ESPN's power rankings today (for whatever it's worth), Denver is ranked 27th out of 32 teams, which would translate into the 6th pick in the draft if they're right.

I'll take that.

Believe it or not, that's second-best in their division. They might suck, but there's a chance their record is artificially inflated by 4 games against crappy divisional opponents. We need to root for complete, demoralizing dysfunction in Denver. Alternatively, we can hope for surprisingly strong showings by Kansas City (not inconceivable) or Oakland (um... yeah.).

KC and Oakland have been running on the fumes of their franchise reputations for awhile now. The dream scenario is that we end up with the 1st and the 32nd pick in the 2010 draft. But that's not happening.

More realistically, we end up with something like the 4th-10th, and the 16th-24th picks in the 1st round of the 2010 draft. IMO, one of those picks should be taking a shot at the franchise QB of the future, and the other on either the best RB or LT available, although I'd be open to the best DE or DT or CB available. I'm a little less inclined towards an OG or WR among the top 2 picks, and a S would have to be a HOF prospect to be taken with our top pick in the 1st round, and at least a Pro Bowl prospect if we use our second pick in the 1st round on the position.

With two 1st round picks next year, I think we should concentrate on drafting the two best available talents playing one of the high impact, marque positions on the field.

We should keep this thread alive all season in dedication to following Denver.

I hope wherever Denver ends up we have a look at a next in line for Matt. No offense to Mike Teal, but...

Well, let's take a look at Denver's schedule.

Week
1 @ Cincy
2 Cleveland
3 @ Oakland
4 Dallas
5 New England
6 @ SD
7 Bye
8 @Baltimore
9 Pittsburg
10 @ Washington
11 SD
12 NYG
13 @ KC
14 @ Indy
15 Oakland
16 @ Philly
17 KC

To me this schedule just screams 3-13. The non-conference is brutal and they don't figure to play anyone late in the season who has run away with their division and has a chance to rest their starters except maybe Indy week 14. Also their three easiest three game stretch is probably right off the bat.

That IS ugly. Out of division games:

1) Cowboys
2) Patriots
3) Steelers
4) Eagles
5) Ravens
6) Giants
7) Colts

Whoa...

Those 6 games against the Bengals, Browns, Chiefs and Raiders will probably be the key ones as to just how deliciously bad they might be this year. OMG! If they go 0-2 against the Bengals and Browns the first two games of the season....hallelujah...hallelujah, hallelujah!

yeah I think they could go about 4-12, but Cincy probably is the key. Hopefully the Raiders and Bengals have their number

More fun news from Denver.

I feel like Dr. Claw from Inspector Gadget, sitting in a big chair, hand on a cat and saying, "Good, good" over and over watching Denver's demise.

They may not have Orton or Simms week 1. If they start 0-3, they're staring directly down the barrel of 0-11 at least.

I was hoping for a top 8 pick from Denver. Am I right to greedily dream of a top 3?

My personal prediction is we pick #4 again. And I'm not sure we want the cap hit of a top three QB or OL pick.
