Richard Griffin: Bring in Pedro

The Jays need to step up and gamble on Pedro Martinez. Reports are the 37-year-old right-hander has been working out back home in the Dominican Republic and that several clubs have gone to watch him throw, including the Cubs and the Rays.

There's no more substance to this story than there is to the speculation we've done on here, but maybe this is a sign that the idea is gaining momentum. You've got to think that if Halladay's injury was any worse that Pedro would [i]already[/] be a Blue Jay. Griffin is dreaming if he thinks that Pedro is going to accept anything less than a fully guaranteed contract, but besides that I basically agree with him.

naw i dont think it's worth it. if halladay isn't 100%, there's no competing for a playoff spot. should just stick to the plan and make a splash in 2010 and let young pitchers learn the ropes this year

If Old Man Griff is suggesting it, then I take it back. I was clearly wrong.

I don't dislike the idea of Pedro whether Halladay is healthy or not; if he can be a good, consistent starter for us, even late in the rotation, it would really help us out instead of leaving us reliant on a parade of rookies and other irregular starters.

I actually think this needed to be done several weeks ago if they were going to do it. It's probably a signing that would be too late now.

I don't think it'd be too late now, though having done it earlier would have helped.

If the Jays can add a (pro-rated) 12-win starter who can go 6 innings most nights, that'd help our rotation out a fair bit. Obviously, it's pending what kind of performance Pedro can manage, but having another semi-reliable starter helping Halladay pin down the rotation would be really nice, we need that stability. That's not going to change going forward even when Doc comes back.
