Why is there and insane amount of picks in these drafts anyway?

There are 50 rounds in the MLB draft. Most teams only sign about 30-35 picks though because they can't sign some and some go to college. So far, they've only done rounds 1-30, rounds 31-50 are today at 11:30 am EST. Even though there are an abundance, there are still some day 3 picks that will be signed.

There were more before so they have narrowed it down. My favorite is always asking people when they think Mike Piazza was drafted. I like watching their face twist in confusion when I tell them it was the 62nd round.

^ hahaha. it's funny when you go back and look to see where some guys were drafted. You really can find talent anywhere. It also helps that their is a minor league where you can send players to develop. I know the NBA is trying to do the same with the development league, but they are still aways away from it working for teams.

I didn't follow the third day of the draft, but thought this might interest some people.

The Detroit Tigers on Thursday drafted Jake Porcello, youngest brother of Rick Porcello, in the 48th round. Jake Porcello is a right-handed pitcher from Seton Hall Prep (West Orange, N.J.).

Detroit took Nicholas Avila, nephew of Tigers assistant general manager Al Avila, in the 42nd round. Nicholas Avila is a right-handed pitcher from Central Florida Community College.

Detroit also took Central Arizona College first baseman Andrew Allen, son of Tigers TV analyst Rod Allen, in the 43rd round.

This was besides drafting Daniels Fields, son of Bruce Fields, in the 6th round. Eric Roof, son of Gene Roof, was drafted in the 18th round. And James Gulliver, son of Glenn Gulliver, was drafted in the 20th round by the Tigers.

David Wright was drafted in the supplemental round and that's beyond the 50 rounds of regular draft.... and Wright is the 2nd best 3rd basemen in the majors behind ARod.
