What teams want Bibby?

Post#1 » by niffoc4 » Fri Jun 19, 2009 12:37 pm

What teams could conceivably be targeting Bibby? I've heard Boston and LA, but their over the cap, so the most they could sign him for was the MLE. Are there any teams under the cap that might be interested? Portland?
It seems to me that we need to be careful not to bid against ourselves with Bibby, because i don't think there are many (if any) teams out there that need a PG and could offer more than the MLE.

We could try to work a S&T with Boston, but apparently it'd be pretty hard to wrangle. Still, if we could pull it off for Big Baby, it'd be a pretty nice move for us.

You might have to overpay to keep him. He can bolt if he wants to for the mle and not think anything of it.

What about a sign and trade of Andre Miller for Mike Bibby?

That's a very difficult proposal as each are free agents. It requires Miller to want to sign with Atlanta, Bibby to want to sign with Philadelphia, and the salaries to be roughly equal year 1. Without both players having the same agent to orchestrate it all, it would require both teams to be working on it at the same time which is unlikely because without a S&T the most we could offer Andre Miller is the MLE, which he could get elsewhere.

Lakers would also be a potential destination. If Mike doesn't stay here i see him taking the full MLE from a team competing for a ring.

Portland was an old rumored destination for Bibby to bring a veteran presence to a lineup of young studs.

So, is Atlanta willing to go over the MLE for Bibby? If so, will Bibby choose money over a shot at a ring in LA or Boston?
Portland is still a possibility, but I am hoping they use their money on Turkoglu

We don't know if he prefers more money, or more chances to get a ring, but more than that, he could want to get a ring with his new team :)

The coaching should count too, I could regret SAC offense (not saying he would want to return to SAC, but want to walk away from Woody's offensive nightmare.

Depending on what they try first, I see POR as the team who can try hard to get him.
But I am not sure the contender like LAK, BOS would want to pay him 11M (twice the MLE if you add the tax).

I would think Atlanta would be willing to exceed the MLE for him, the question is by how much?

The MLE is likely to go down, but if it remains at 5.5M then Atlanta could outbid essentially everyone by offering 6.5 or 7M (Detroit, Memphis, OKC, and Sacramento aren't likely bidders). Is it worth the extra 1 or 1.5M if he can get a full MLE offer from a team closer to a ring? It's a big cut from his last season salary either way so he may balk at it if he can get the full MLE from someone else. The other question is if a team in title contention wants to spend the full MLE on Bibby? It's one thing to pay a guy the minimum as a hired gun who just wants a ring (like Karl Malone took his last season to play in LA), but the MLE is essentially the only way a capped out contender can improve the roster or replace free agent loses and it doesn't in cost if they are over the tax threshold. In LA for instance, Bibby wouldn't be a good replacement for a departed Ariza or Odom.

The other thing would be if a team like Portland has cap room to exceed the MLE. They could do it with a couple of cuts of non-guaranteed salaries (Blake and Outlaw aren't fully guaranteed) and renouncing Frye (just a matter of time). However, if they did all that would Bibby be the target? Or is it Andre Miller or Hedo Turkoglu?

IMO, Philly is the other likely playoff team to offer full MLE (if Miller walks) because of the system they are putting in and Bibby's familiarity and success with it.

The other factor that I hadn't touched on is length of contract. If someone is willing to go longer with Bibby that will probably sway him because he isn't getting any younger. He won't get a big payday at the end of this contract. If you lock him in around the MLE but go a year longer he might take that over a shorter deal that is higher in year 1 salary.

This is our biggest decision of the offseason.

Does everyone think Sund will let the market decide the value for Bibby? I do, as I don't see this GM as very groundbreaking. While he had the luxury to sit back and keep things intact for this year, I am guessing he is very satisfied with last year's results. The Hawks met the goals they were seeking, and having everyone return is a safer bet than Sund making any dramatic changes.

Bibby made us better for sure as he was as good at the PG as we had seen since Mookie. And like Mookie, I think he only can take us so far. Younger PGs like Rondo and Devin Harris can get around him. Can either one of those guys be on our radar? Those guys are at the top of my list as I think that element of a quicker PG could be the difference for us.

I don't expect any major changes though as again this is the safer way to go about things. Bibby IMO would like to see a multiyear contract to sign or this thing could really drag on until fall camp.
