Thread on the OT Board
http://www.realgm.com/boards/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=915196&start=15
I didn't post in it, but read it after it was already locked.
The mod's message who locked it (Rooster) was this:
"Never, ever post a topic like this again. Ever. This is your first warning. Those who posted in this topic, if you see something like it again, report it instead of replying. Don't even give it that dignity."
Just wondering if I missed something and want it cleared it up why it was locked?

Re: Thread on the OT Board
a thread like that would give people a chance to bash religions, which could lead to bad things

Opens the door to many negatives. I also believe the OT forum is going a different direction so threads like that won't be acceptable.

Re: Thread on the OT Board
The OT mods have been doing an outstanding job to change the tone of the forum and a thread like this would not contribute towards that change.

Re: Thread on the OT Board
The lock might be appropriate but the response seemed a little overblown. Maybe an explanation that these topics go bad quickly and so the thread will be locked. The OP wasn't doing anything wrong.

^ Yeah, pretty much what I was thinking.
The response by the mod just seemed a little harsh given the conversation in the thread. Seemed to me like everyone one was just kidding around.

I'd like to reinforce this post.
There has been a rash of anti-religion posting on the Off Topic forum within the last half-year and I hve taken the stance that it is disrespectful and reprehensible. The opening post appeared to be baiting the kind of posts that have been prevailing in this vein. I wanted to make it clear to posters that the Off Topic forum is a place where posters of all religions can feel welcome, and that sentiments seeking to attack them are not advocated or allowed.
The response had as much to do with the general climate facing the forum, and the posting styles of some involved, as with that particular thread. As always, if there are any questions, my PM box is open. (I recently received a PM from a non-mod, so I'm hoping glitches won't be a problem.)

Q: What was the "tone" of the forum several years ago as opposed to now and why did it need to change? Most people who have been around for along time all agree that the tone now is alot less interesting and significantly less desirable than it used to be.
I think the tone mainly changed when the forums were split up.

Re: Thread on the OT Board
Things did change when we split everything up.
What I am mostly referring to is the topics as we are getting ones that are more appropriate for the General audience.
The Moderating team has also changed significantly and the new moderators have set a new tone for things.

Re: Thread on the OT Board
Ha-ha, and you guys thought I was overly sensitive. All I did was keep it PG-13 material. A serious debate about religion is what the CA board does. Of course, light-hearted jabbing ( you know, male bonding ) is the very essence of the OT board. Maybe the topic should have been moved to the CA board, where, if the intent of the OP was ridicule, it would have either turned into an intelligent (which some call dry) discussion or fall off the face of the earth.

Uhhh...no. The CA board hits the same childish lows as the OT board. Just different topics.
I support the suggestion that every lock should be accompanied by a mod post giving a reason for the lock.

That's what I'm talking about. Religious topics on the CA board bring out some of the most childish behavior in this forum.

Yet, they're able to handle it without the topic being locked. Economics and political views, on the other hand........
