Daye's combine vs Durant's

Post#1 » by JMac1 » Sat Jun 20, 2009 5:18 am

Tomorrow the Suns are working out Daye (for a second time) and Earl Clark. I think the Suns are really considering Daye, thus we need to come to that realization and convince ourselves that he would be a good pick, lol. Daye was the hype of the predraft, but then his athletic testing dropped him down a bit. I heard he received a busted lip from Cassipi, but I also heard the Nets let the workout get out of hand, Anyway I compared Daye combine workout to Durant..PURELY on the athleticism, so calm down. It is kind of interesting, check this out.......

Height w/o Shoes Height w/shoes Weight Wingspan Reach Body Fat

Austin Daye - 2009 6' 9.75" 6' 10.75" 192 7' 2.75" 9' 2" 5.5

Kevin Durant - 2007 6' 9" 6' 10.25" 215 7' 4.75" 9' 2" 6.6

No Step Vert Reach Max Vert Max Vert Reach Bench Agility Sprint

Kevin Durant 25.0 11' 3" 28.0 11' 6" 12.11 3.55

Austin Daye 26.0 11' 4" 33.5 11' 11.5" 12.33 3.45

Now take what you want from it. Everything is almost the same except Durant is a 1/10th faster in the 3/4 and Daye is 2/10th faster in the AGILITY!! Durant's standing vert is 1 inch more, but his max is 5 inches higher. Obviously Durant is heavier.

Just something to think about. Don't get to caught up in measureables...With weight training and confidence Daye could become "special." Clark is safer though.

Really?? Wow. Most reports says he is the best shooter, scorer next to Curry.

BTW, here is Hollingers draft rater

Rankings: The top 12

Top 12 rated collegians for 2009
Player School Draft Rater
1. Ty Lawson North Carolina 16.34
2. Blake Griffin Oklahoma 16.21
3. Tyreke Evans Memphis 15.02
4. Austin Daye Gonzaga 14.24
5. Stephen Curry Davidson 14.18
6. Nick Calathes Florida 13.66
7. DeJuan Blair Pittsburgh 13.56
8. Danny Green North Carolina 13.28
9. Jonny Flynn Syracuse 12.99
10. James Harden Arizona State 12.97
11. Hasheem Thabeet Connecticut 12.90
12. Earl Clark Louisville 12.88

For starters, let's talk about two of the players who play multiple positions -- this matters now that we're rating players in part based on position.

Stephen Curry graded out at 14.18 as a wing but only 12.86 as a point guard. Either way, it puts him in the top dozen players, but by this rating, he's a much better prospect if he's able to defend against wings.

The difference for Earl Clark was less dramatic, but he rated slightly better as a wing than as a big man (12.14), which would have dropped him from 12th to 15th.

A couple of other names on here are likely to raise eyebrows:

Austin Daye might not have had a great season, but the Draft Rater looks favorably upon a 6-foot-11 small forward who can shoot (assuming he can play the 3 in the NBA). His numbers were strongest in the categories that project best to the pros, including 42.9 percent shooting percentage on 3s and 2.1 blocks per game, which is why he moves all the way up to No. 4 on this list.

His jumpshot is fantastic, but I dont trust anyone who is over 6'4" and not over 200lbs.

I just think it's funny that he ran the 3/4 court sprint slower than Eddy Curry.

If Clark's not there, I think we go with James Johnson. Unless, of course, someone unexpected slips.

Daye not Clark, my bad. I am cool with that too. You never know how someone will turn out. I think we might as well go all in with Daye, we blew that chance last year on McGee. I wanted him big time.

Daye is interesting that he has tremendous physical traits... minus weight. Weight comes with training and I think he can gain 20 pounds in 3-4 months given the Suns training staff focus on this aspect before season start.... he has the skills already just not the weight.

Some say Prince...
He can also turn out to be a Jeffries or a that ex-Suns player with a surname which is really hard to pronounce or spell here haha Nikolas Tsy...

Lets say he does put on 20-25 pounds for next season and then another 20 pounds the year after that... he will be around 240-245 pounds... that would put him PF/C capability... with his jumpshooting and shot blocking skills.... he can be a real special player.

I'm starting to think we should draft Daye if he has any defensive ability at all.

I love the optimisim, but that is clearly insane. Unless you want Daye testifying to congress about his steroid use, he won't ganin that kind of weight, ever. He will always be skinny. He needs to get strong, he could possibly put on 20lbs (good weight) max for is career. He can add some muscle and core strength, which would improve his athleticism, not hinder it, as some people have mentioned. If he adds sloppy fat, then yea it will slow him down. I think I could add 20 pounds of muscle for a 100 million dollar contract, so I'm sure he could do it. I like the way he talks. 3 years from now we might be saying "wow, remember how Daye was when he first came into the league." Then again we could also say "wtf, were they thinking when they picked this guy." But as they say, "a scary man can't win." "nothing ventured, nothing gained." "yada yada yada...

You guys also gotta remember, Durant was the EXCEPTION to the rule. His combine stats were unimpressive, that doesnt mean other players who are subpar in physical tests are the ones you want to drool over.

Dayes body is pretty much the same as Anthony Randolph as for his measurements- he was injured so I wouldn't put that much stock in his vertical jump, lane agility, and sprints.

Daye is really reminiscent of Anthony Randolph in 08 and Kevin Durant in 07- both those guys turned out ok.
