What I picture happening come draft night....

Post#1 » by DWCP2 » Sat Jun 20, 2009 1:05 am

You could take this along the lines of all could's, would's, and should's all you want, but this is what I'm picturing come draft night.

#1: Pacers will draft a PG or PF with the 13th pick.
Ultimately how this plays out is how fast the deeply talented PG ranks come off the board in the first 12 picks. If it flows even keel, or some talented PG falls, they should go PG. Otherwise, stick with a PF for the future.

#2: Whatever they don't get at the 13th pick, EXPECT them to get by the 20th pick. By that I mean they will be trading for a 2nd first round pick, using a current veteran, possibly TJ Ford, as the prime bait. They will have their pick amongst Blair, Mullens, and Hansborough, which I fully expect all three to be gone by the 20th pick.

#3: Look for a future sacrifice in picks to acquire a SG late in this draft. They didn't bring in Chase Budinger and Sam Young for the sake of making the rounds evaluating talent. Without Dunleavy they do need help on the wing. Common practice would be to sacrifice two 2nd round picks for a team in late round one not wanting a guaranteed contract wasting time and space on their roster.

That's really it, I'll can give you something more detailed in another post when I get more time to write.

I don't see the additional sacrifice in late picks for the SG. I think #2 is essentially the thinking that lead to bringing in guys like Young and Budinger for workouts.

If we can get a late 1st for 2 2nds, then we should hop on it, but I don't see that happening in all likelihood. An offer of $3 million in cold hard cash (which I don't see us offering up) will likely buy a pick in this draft, but giving up a 1st rounder for 2 2nds? I don't see that going down.

According to Reggie Miller who was on NBA TV's coverage of the pre-draft workouts, Reggie said the rumors he's been hearing from Indy is that the Pacers are going to be looking to dealing Jack or Ford in order to find a PG of the future. He gave no details. I just found it interesting.

I still think we pick up Earl Clark at 13.
Trade Ford for a 16-20 range and pick up either Eric Maynor or Jeff Teague.
Buy a late first round pick, and pick up Sam young.

I don't expect any big trades this year for us at all. If anyone is traded it will be TJ Ford IMO. Simply because he would be the only valuable piece that I think we would part with. Maybe Jeff Foster, but I doubt Larry Bird does this. As far as Indiana having 3 million to burn on a pick. I wouldn't be surprised to see Jamaal Tinsley bought out. Which would save the team some money.

If we can't get anything more than a pick in the 16-20 range (in a draft this weak) for TJ Ford, we may as well keep him.

The ho hum night, Pacers take bpa at 13. Most likely a pg (Lawson or Maynor) if not a pg I think Johnson is closest to a fit. If they take a pg look for some attempt to move Ford but I will be really surprised if that nets a pick before 20. Pick 28 currently owned by MInn is a realistic expectation but, there may be no takers.

The exciting night. Pacers can work a trade down with either Chi or Minn and still get either Maynor or Lawson. They still try to move Ford and are successful. Now have picks 26 and 28. Lots of interesting options to choose from at that point.

I know everyone is all about dealing Ford, but just remember, the coaching staff and front office are a lot higher on that guy than we are, and while I don't think they are under the impression that he is the long term option at the point, they still like him enough not to deal him away after one season in a new system.

I think it's going to be a PG or Blair/Hansbrough at #13, as Chad Ford said in his draft nuggets. I think we would like to get a mid-late first rounder, but I'm not sure we will be able to do so.

And you can't argue what he says since he totally got our two picks last year. He didn't see the trade coming with Portland, but had Rush and Roy coming to us. The man knows his stuff or has good sources.

Sure you can. He pegged our picks (sorta) in his final mock draft, which he posted at 7:12 pm on the day of the draft (after the draft started, IIRC). The mock he posted as late as the night before the draft, he had us taking DJ Augustin, and he had Robin Lopez going 17th (still to Toronto).

What i see after the draft.. Larry will come out and say. We tried to get another 1st rd pick. But we couldn't get it done. We traded down because we were to damb stupid to move up. We like our team. we dont think we need to ad anything to it. We"re Just trying to make the playoffs. We dont want to win a championship. If we did we would have traded down to try to get a player that could become a star. SCREW ALL PACERS FANS I"M THE BOSS

^You better put in quotes what things you have "Larry" saying and what things YOU are saying before I do something involving red font and a lecture in spelling & punctuation.

I may be a bit biased because i've supported Larry Bird since day 1, but, with the recent history of him re-shaping our image, building this team, trading Jeramine O'Neal, how can anyone doubt him right now? He's done a great job. He had a few bumps in the road like all teams but he got over it quickly and moved on each time. If we don't get another pick or even move up, I won't be upset. I know they tried and the asking price was just too much for them to give up. It's not the end of the world. Afterall, it takes two to make a deal, and you must give something to get something. I hope Bird doesn't throw anything and everything to land one guy he likes.

What I see happenning...

Conservative - no major movement in the 1st round by our Pacers.

13th spot looks like take Blair / Lawson / Jennings

At the podium is announced - Gerald Henderson - Shooting Guard

He is in the mold of recent picks. He is a solid, well seasoned, fundamentally sound, high character player. He can step in right away and push for floor time. He will compete with Rush for the starting spot at the 2. He fits our system well. (My secondary selection would be Terrance Williams from Louisville).

While PG seems to be the trendy selection, we are solid at that spot with Ford, Jack, Diener. The 4 is a need, but there is no real talent on the board imo. A wing play will be needed as Dunleavy is a huge question mark, Daniels will be gone as will Graham. With our fast pace we will need another strong body on the wing to run the floor.

If Jennings is there i don't think they would pass on him. Even for the fact of maybe trading him like they did with Bayless. I don't think they would select Henderson. I wouldn't mind him but i don't see him getting past Charlotte's pick. And like i said, Jennings is a greater need and could probably get more in return in a deal then Henderson.

Btw, welcome to the forum! Settle in and post away. Ask if you have any questions.

IMO, Gerald Henderson isn't that far-fetched a pick, considering that Larry Bird knows his dad real well, Gerald Henderson Sr. who was on one of the Celtics' championship teams with Bird. Factor in that Marquis Daniels will probably not be resigned, and Mike Dunleavy's injury uncertainty and I could see it happening. Yea, we could use a PG pick or even Blair\Johnson\Hansbourgh at this pick, but there is a real possibility that Henderson could be the pick.

I will say this though, if Henderson is our draft pick at 13, I can also see a trade by the Pacers for another draft pick announced shortly afterwards....
