Remember when Krause wanted to start rebuilding the Bulls, starting in 1997? He didn't want to be like the 1980s Celtics, who got old and took years to rebuild. As a matter of fact, Rick Pitino had offered the 3rd and 6th picks in exchange for Scottie Pippen. All Krause had to do was say yes. Unfortunately, that pesky owner, Jerry Reinsdorf, stepped in and stopped the trade, all because some guy named Michael Jordan had threatened to retire if the trade went through.
Well, those same Chicago Bulls took forever to build. Krause was right. It took the Bulls years to recover. And all they had to show for it was just another lousy championship in 1998.
I don't know about you guys, but I'd rather start rebuilding now as opposed to winning a championship next season. What's so great about another championship? Another banner? Big deal. We have 17 of those. Maybe another parade? Well, I'm not sure the city would be willing to foot the bill for that, seeing as how the recession has hit hard these days. It just doesn't make economic sense for Boston to throw yet, another expensive parade. Look at how much they've spent for the Patriots and Red Sox over the past few years.
For the economy's sake, screw another championship. Let's rebuild now!!!
Why would we not be competing for a championship next year if we trade Ray?? We'd have PP, KG, Perk. It's called retooling while still have STRONG aspirations for more championships for many years not just ONE!! We only have one shot at trading Ray and his contract. Hemingway suggests waiting till the trade deadline. I think that wouldn't be the way to go. Sign Ray for how much next year to just try and do what you could do now while everyone else is getting in position for 2010?
I'm not against trading Ray. However, trading him away just for the sake of using his expiring contract is something I don't agree with. We'd need a player(s) who would be able to contribute significantly this coming season to fill in for Ray's absence. Someone posted a deal with Ray in exchange for Mike Miller, Foye and Gomes. That's something I wouldn't be opposed to at all. But trading Ray for a draft pick who won't contribute for another 2-3 years down the road, therefore closing the window on KG and Pierce? No thanks.
Going by your same reasoning, would the Bulls have won a title had they traded Pippen? I mean, they still would have had Jordan, Rodman and Kukoc right? I highly doubt they would have beat Indiana that year in the ECF.
