Jay Cutler to Devin Hester: Already in sync

Post#1 » by SportsWorld » Thu Jun 4, 2009 4:16 am

One play into Wednesday's full-team Bears scrimmage session confirmed the most interesting bit of progress at Halas Hall still three months before the 2009 season-opener.

Jay Cutler glided back into a seven-step drop, set his feet in a pocket protected by left tackle Orlando Pace, and peered downfield where wide receiver Devin Hester had gotten a step on his defender.

For aesthetic purposes, ignore for a moment that cornerback Zack Bowman was limited in how physical he could get with Hester in this non-contact drill.

But that is beside the point.

A few more Cutler articles as well:

Jay Cutler has been nothing short of excellent with his passes today, no surprise considering the buzz he continues to generate.

The crowd of onlookers, which includes the Wales National rugby team, was in awe when Cutler fired a deep pass down the right sideline and hit Devin Hester in stride.

More impressive has been the touch Cutler continues to put on his mid-range passes, including several over the middle to tight end Greg Olsen. Cutler also has displayed his mobility, showing good footwork and a burst after getting flushed out of the pocket.

Tony Dungy questions Chicago Bears' acquisition of Jay Cutler
http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/fo ... 3927.story
The giddy reaction in Chicago over the Bears' acquisition of Pro Bowl quarterback Jay Cutler is not shared by former Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy.

"[The Bears] took a risk [trading for Cutler]. I think they took that risk specifically with beating the Green Bay Packers in mind," Dungy said Wednesday. "I really think Chicago gave up a lot to get a quarterback who they believe is going to be the final piece of the puzzle. But I am not sure he has won enough to merit that yet."

Dungy and the newly retired New England Patriots safety Rodney Harrison were introduced Wednesday as the newest members of the NBC studio show "Football Night in America." Their first regular-season Sunday night game will be Sept. 13 when the Bears travel to Green Bay.

"I can remember when [coach Lovie Smith went to the Bears], saying: 'We have to beat the Green Bay Packers. That's what this job is all about in Chicago,' " Dungy said. "[They got] Cutler because of Green Bay's defense and all of the press and man coverage. [The Bears] have to have that threat."

Lots more offseason fluffs articles although Cliff Levingston is extremely excited about the Cutler to Hester combo. Hester can get deep and Cutler can hit him so we've got a great home run combo there.

Dungy thinks we got Cutler to beat Green Bay's press coverage? Sorry coach but you're an idiot. We had a chance to get a franchise QB which is the best way to be and stay competitive in the hopes of winning a superbowl. Being Peyton Manning's former coach, you should know something about that. Oh well.

Methinks Dungy is recalling how we smacked the Colts in the mouth Wk1 last season with Orton at the helm so he prob thinks we don't even need a real QB to win. Of course, Neckbeard only went 13/21 for 150yds in that game but we still ran away with that one to christen their new stadium.
Turn down for what?

I can't imagine many things more excruciatingly boring than watching Tony Dungy talking on TV...
Next time the cult's spaceship lands we'll all be wearing black Starburys.

Cutler comments on Hester...

I posted this another thread, however it is more appropriate make sure it is posted in this one.

http://www.dailypress.com/sports/dp-spt ... 8492.story

"I've watched every game from last year and seen him in action quite a bit," Cutler said. "It's a tough transition from (defensive back) to receiver. He's still learning, but overall I can't be happier with how we're working together and his progression.

"I think he's definitely a legitimate No. 1 receiver in the NFL."
A plea for post scoring is a plausible Bulls plan, but plainly isn't a priority. In response to a post player's dismay about his lack of points in the paint, Paxson said.... "I'm not nearly as concerned about the offensive stuff as he is."

More fluff as Uncle Cliffy would say........but it's good to see Cutty and Hester develop a good rapport with each other.

It is critical that they are on the same page and enjoy playing together.

The chemistry is developing nicely.

They should be a deadly combo.... and if we can add another proven legit threat on the other side... watch out.

Hester Comes To Defense Of Cutler
24th June, 2009 - 8:07 am
Chicago Tribune - Bears wide receiver Devin Hester has come to the defense of new quarterback Jay Cutler.

Cutler has been criticized for not being a good enough leader.

"If you haven't been around a person like Cutler, how could you say something like that?" Hester said Monday night.

Former coaches Tony Dungy and Mike Ditka have knocked the quarterback lately.

"Can't judge a book by its cover," Hester said. "If you haven't sat down and talked to him, how could you say something like that? He's calm in the huddle. He makes us laugh and he jokes around before the ball is snapped. That's the kind of quarterback who is relaxed and says, 'Let's play ball.'

Devin Hester comes to defense of Jay Cutler

Says new Chicago Bears quarterback fine as leader

By Fred Mitchell | Tribune reporter
June 24, 2009

Devin Hester says he has heard enough.

He is tired of hearing the criticism that new Bears quarterback Jay Cutler is not a mature, capable leader.

"If you haven't been around a person like Cutler, how could you say something like that?" Hester said before appearing in a photo shoot Monday evening at Soldier Field for an Under Armour commercial.

In recent weeks, Super Bowl-winning coaches Tony Dungy and Mike Ditka have been among those who have expressed reservations about Cutler's maturity level.

"Can't judge a book by its cover," Hester said. "If you haven't sat down and talked to him, how could you say something like that? He's calm in the huddle. He makes us laugh and he jokes around before the ball is snapped. That's the kind of quarterback who is relaxed and says, 'Let's play ball.' "

Cutler, 26, threw for more than 4,500 yards last season for Denver but raised eyebrows when he basically forced a trade after he learned that new Broncos coach Josh McDaniels had considered trading him.

"Just from the OTAs we've had, our offense has changed a whole lot," Hester said. "I feel like we're stronger than we have ever been. I feel like we're going to take the ball up and down the field. That's the kind of quarterback Jay brings to this team."

Despite reading and hearing about the Bears' need for a marquee receiver, Hester believes Cutler can make last year's receiving corps into a premier one.

"If we sign a big-time receiver or a free agent receiver who can help our team, I'm glad," Hester said.

"But the guys we have here now, we're pretty set. [The coaches] just want us to make plays. ... Jay is the type of quarterback who is going to find a way to get the job done."

It's really astounding how many people are sleeping on the Bears after we've acquired a pro-bowl QB. You'd be hard pressed to find a so-called "expect" on NFL network, ESPN or anywhere else that would pick the Bears to win the division.
