Most of Mos Def's work is pretty good and if you think you like rappers like Kweli and Common you'd love Def.

Been a hip hop fan for more than 20 years, and Mos Def is easily one of my all-time favorite MCs. I've been listening to "Black on Both Sides" at least once a week since it came out back in 1999. "Black Star" with Talib Kweli is almost as good. He just released a new album for the first time in forever last week, "The Ecstatic"; I'm liking it more and more with each listen.
Ha, I almost forgot -- the verse below is one of Def's from "Here Comes the Champ." Been listening to that a ton lately because, hey, that's what we are right?

For a guy recovering from A.D.D. I find it a bit hard to follow his songs.. although I like a few of them.
I.E.
-But I like ST's sig. (aint diggin the whole song yet)
I prefer gangsta rap and I prefer a clear voice.
Can't go wrong w/ Rakim, Makaveli, and Frank White.

Safari lets me go back and forth in page history with a three-finger swipe.
I heard about Mos Def's challenge on the NY radio when he issued it...
I love the idea. I doubt big-time rappers would do it; imagine which NBA players would sign up for a one-on-one game during all-star weekend.
They'd rather have their legion of fans than lose them. It would destroy their egos.
That being said, it would be awesome, especially if the proceeds go to charity.
But Mos Def is out of his mind. He's got his fans, but he'd be one of the first to go. His got-out-of-bed voice and boring flow...he'd be great in a San Francisco coffee house spoken word contest (and then skateboard and talk about his movies afterwards) but in a battle? He'd be the first to go. Mos Def has been irrelevant for a decade. I think acting got into his head or something.
But most of all, nobody would do this if Nas showed up, because he'd kill everybody.
He already killed Jay-z.
But Eminem would clown people in a freestyle battle...Nas goes hard though.

I like a good rap when I hear it, but I rarely hear one. Words and rhythm are two out of four cornerstones of a song. Melody and dynamics are missing. Like Lenny Kravitz said, it seems as if the record labels think black people in America of today don't know what a guitar is. I'd like to add to that, it seems as if they think melodic content is a thing of the past, or maybe they don't dare to guess what's a good melody or a bad one when they sign a band.
I love the melodic parts of the traditional black american music so much, and it's such a shame that we don't get to hear more of that. I know it's out there. What happened to the musical heritage of giants like Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding, Sly Stone, James Brown, Prince, The Jackson Five etc? Out of the new black american music I like Common, TV on the Radio and a few more. And don't give me that piano player dude from the Oprah show.

Re: Community Thread IX
I was listening to Stevie's "Songs in the Key of Life" just the other day. What a masterpiece. Few musicians will ever enjoy a run like he did in the 70s.
Like all forms of music, hip-hop still has its share of greatness. You just have to look harder in order to find it. Not to date myself too terribly, but I definitely miss the old days, back in the late 80s and early 90s, when it was still fresh and new. Public Enemy, the Beastie Boys, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, the Wu-Tang Clan -- it seemed like the genre re-invented itself every few months.
There is still a lot of good stuff out there, it just doesn't excite me like it used to. Ninety percent of the hip-hop that gets mainstream exposure is just abysmal. Soulja Boy? WTF is that?

If I want aggressive, Black Sabbath is still to this day heavier than all the posers that came after them (including all the gunwaving gangsta rappers). Same with Beethoven, Prokofiev and a few others of the classical school. No tough talk needed. Most big names that came before us were big because of the weight that they and their music carried, not because of some lame "schtick" marketing ploy or fake image.
Kanye West?! What deranged tool signed this tone deaf piece of crap? The poor bastard can't even hold a note, and his arrangements are lame and unimaginative at best.
There is a myriad of great unheard and unreleased music. There must be a music revolution just around the corner — one that will let it all flow freely.

Yeah, Lil' Stevie is music royalty, no doubt about it. Bob Marley, Parliament, Sly Stone, Earth Wind and Fire and a long row of others are, too. I love the Beastie Boys, by the way. But I'm such a sucker for melody, so even the rap that I do like still isn't all that interesting to me after about two minutes.
