Re: Caron Butler ..LOL!
memphis did not get a failed draft pick, they swapped it on draft night and ended up with darrel arthur.
They did not get value for Gasol because he was still under contract for 3 1/2 more years and he was WORTH said contract. It's not like KG where we HAD to move him or he walked after the season, and he was also much younger. They could have had a much better package had they been patient about it and not reactionary.
It was essentially a firesale. Marc Gasol is the best piece they got, the 2 firsts will turn into darrel arthur and a pick in the 28-30 range next year. Crittenton was turned into getting back the pick they owed the wiz for navarro, which was never going to be a lottery pick anyway because of the protection. Gasol's salary wasn't handcuffing them in adding players, but the team was (and is) losing a boatload of money. They would have had better options to move them had they waited for the offseason. They are no more likely to attract a big name FA than we are.
Dunderhead mchale took chris richard over marc gasol. Marc Gasol is going to have a very nice nba career. He didn't start until the 2nd half of the year, and then he put up some really nice numbers, especially after the coaching change. I expect minimum 15-10 this year from him with nice percentages. But they didn't know that when they made the deal.

Chris Richard was gone in a hurry, I think my choices were even worse, I wanted Reyshawn Terry or Demetris Nichols if I recall. For some reason I have an unhealthy obsession with Syracuse players. Yes I'm all about getting Paul Harris.

Re: Caron Butler ..LOL!
Personally I feel this is an attempt by Kahn to gauge Miller's value by asking for a player he doesn't want and they don't want to give up. Asking for the moon and settling for what you really wanted in the first place. It's good gamesmanship. Butler is the move of last resort for them while trying to rid salary, after #5, jamison, and arenas (who no GM in their right mind will take). It will take alot of dickering, but in the end I believe Miller is precisely the veteran the wiz want, it's just a case of how much salary we take back in return.
Butler is worth more than #5, he's got 2 years left on a fair contract. If he were 3 or 4 years younger I suspect we'd go hard after him. 20-5-5 with 2 steals and great percentages types of players are hard to come by.

If Paul Harris were a couple inches taller he'd be a lottery pick, but 6-4 small forwards are a very rare animal in today's NBA. I'm not expecting a whole lot from those 2 picks though.

I never got the impression that was the case.

There was the risk. Taylor was NOT going to give him that 20 mil extension he wanted, so it was a strong possibility.

OK, in the sense where you have to decide whether to pay him, I can see that.

He was going to sign an extension or be traded. Those were the only two possibilities.

What about doing some coke and then signing an extension or doing some coke and then being traded? Doesn't that make it four possibilities? I'm <sniff> just sayin'.

Also, the pick from the Wizards was the one that Memphis sent to them for JCN.
Not saying that hes not producing..... Just not nearly enough to make the trade worth it. Plus, i believe that hes a good player, but when your on a team with only one other center(Darko) and your averaging just over 30 minutes, you should be producing more than 7 reb and 11 pts. JMHO
I was waiting for ojMayo to come in and say "How is Gasol supposed to get any rebounds with Mayo draining every shot he takes?"
I guess we will have to agree to disagree on the Gasol/Gasol trade.

That would have been great! and yes, we will have to agree to disagree. A good debate is nice every once in a while.

I agree, but I don't think this is the best time. Too much emphasis would be put on the success of the teams (already saw it in this thread). Memphis seems worse everyday with all these prospects refusing workouts with them and the Lakers just won it all. Neither Gasol deserves the credit/blame for where their team is at. Yes Pau was good in the playoffs but that team is stacked.
Someone mentioned earlier that M.Gasol was better than expected and I guess that is probably why I have differing opinions than most on the trade. I thought the Grizzlies knew they were trading for a starting center. If they thought of him as a throw in then I was wrong, it was a really bad trade. But I remember M.Gasol's name being brought up around here before last years draft in discussion about who the Grizzlies could offer to move up and get Mayo. So if people around here knew that the guy was legit I figured the Grizz knew too. I am either giving the Grizzlies too much credit or not enough credit to the posters on this board.

That trade was Jerry West's gift to LA.
