Packers Close To A Deal With Greg Jennings
Posted by Mike Florio on June 22, 2009, 11:47 p.m. EDT
The Green Bay Packers and receiver Greg Jennings are close to an agreement on a new contract, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

The source is a good one — it’s Jennings himself.

The fourth-year wideout made the disclosure after a minicamp practice on Monday.

“We’ve been working on some things,” Jennings said. “We’re coming pretty close, as far as my understanding is, to some type of a deal. But when I say close, we could still be far . . . if that makes sense. But I think we’re coming close. You just never know how long ‘close’ can take to actually closing the deal.”

Jennings, one of the best young receivers in the game, could end up with a contract averaging more than $8 million per year.

If there’s a new Collective Bargaining Agreement by March, Jennings would be eligible for unrestricted free agency. Absent a new CBA, 2010 will proceed without a salary cap — and Jennings will be a restricted free agent only.

Good news. It's going to be a large package no doubt. Jennings first choice is definitely not GB but he'll take the cash. With Drivers career winding down, Jones being injured and somewhat of a headcase and Nelson still an unknown we needed to lock up our #1. Good job TT.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Who's next, Collins? I think Kampman walks. I'm not giving him a penny until you see him play half a season in the 34 anyway.

Great news. I wouldn't give Collins a deal until he has another proven season or if he doesn't expect top safety money.

I don't really grasp the importance of this.
What is the likelihood of a new CBA in March, I would think it would be pretty high. If he becomes a free agent anyways, does it really matter?

They just reported on Fox 6 news that the deal is officially done. They said he will be the 2nd highest paid receiver in the league, only behind Fitzgerald. They didn't disclose any details.

Sounds like 3 yrs/$27-30 million...I wonder if that will be the end of his era in GB then? Oh well, cross that bridge when we come to it.

That is a lot of money. But I am glad we have him locked up for the prime of his career

So is it an extension, as in we have Jennings for four more seasons?

I believe so as it says we'll have him through the 2012 season.

That's alot of cash but obviously the only way to keep him there.

I'm kind of luke-warm on the deal. I'm happy that we locked him up, but I was hopeful for a longer term contract, even it if meant a 6yr/60 million. I'd like to see a Rodgers/Jennings connection for as long as possible.

Good news. I'll worry about four years down the road, four years down the road.

3 years was something Jennings pushed for. He does not want to be locked in long term. We can still tag him at that point (assuming tags stay in the new CBA). It's a risk for Jennings, TT would have given him a longer deal

But in the NFL it's all about guaranteed money anyway regardless of the length of the deal.

Good move by TT
