Richard Jefferson Traded in Salary Dump

Post#1 » by ALL HAIL » Tue Jun 23, 2009 6:12 pm

San Antonio acquires Jefferson for nothing (Oberto, Bowen, and Thomas -- all partially guaranteed expirings).

Doesn't scare me at all unless they get a good big this summer too.

Just another example of what a team can too with expiring contracts and a desire to absorb a fat contract (LA and Gasol, GS and B.Davis, New Jersey and Vince, and now SA and Jefferson).

Great move by both teams in my opinion.

yea, this definitely doesnt scare me...the spurs are like the suns when they traded away bell and diaw for richardson.

they lose their defense and only get back offense

I'm not knocking Jefferson at all, I think he'll do really well, I just think they need a lot more by the way of overall depth -- specifically at the 4/5.

Except the only difference is that Bowen will be bought out from MIL and return to the spurs

Always gotta keep an eye on the Spurs. They don't go away. Like cockroaches.

I'm kidding.

They will look better offensively, but defensively ?! Kobe will abuse them, as Bowen is gone. Jefferson is a very good offensive player, but he is at the same time poor playing defense.

They will have to stay healthy in order to be competitive and consistent next season, which I think, considering the past problems Duncan, Ginobili and Parker have had, won't happen.

But, overall, it's a good move by the Spurs and the Bucks, who will save tons of money.

Jefferson is a better defender than Bowen at this point. Not sure where the idea that RJ is a bad defender came from, I've never heard that one before.

Nah, Diaw and Bell could still contribute. All the players the Spurs sent are on their last legs.

As long as the Lakers retain the team, it's all good. Bynum will return to form next year, Ariza continues to develop, and hopefully Sasha wakes up after a horrendous season. If Mitch can do something with Morrison's contract, that'll be even better.

P.S. Pop, your committee has to rescind this trade! It's not equal value.

This puts SA back into 2nd round contention but they are not WCF threats to the Lakers.

More importantly for the Lakers, the Spurs just put a 15 million dollar dent into that fat cap space they had cleared out for 2010.

Agreed. I was confused myself by this latest gospel. I don't know about the financial side of all this, but the Spurs made a great basketball trade IMO. They gave up their old garbage for a good player.

Cockroaches indeed.

Yes sir. I love it when we win and start making other teams desperate.

Yeah I said it ... the Spurs essentially blew up any chance at a big name pickup next summer by acquiring a very solid role player in RJ. They're trying their absolute hardest to win now but the Lakers are so much better.

Wait till we get Kidd ... other teams will be sh-tting bricks.

All Hail...What is this crap about Kidd, you and EE both want him. Did you see how decrepit he looked in the playoffs? He was running on fumes. Only his incredible passing ability was keeping him afloat. He can't move his feet on D anymore. He'd help on rebounding and finding seams in a triangle offense where his ability get's downsized. Fisher, Farmar, Brown rotating at PG looks like one more year to me. Farmar and Shanny will only improve. D Fish is D Fish. Kidd is not the answer guys. You disagree? How soon you guys forget G.P. I was so geeked on G.P., it didn't work.

Rofl. You guys actually think the big name agents would sign with the Spurs in 2010? They've always been fiscally responsible when it comes to managing contracts, I doubt they had any interest in making a big splash like New York would, and I doubt the noteworthy players would bother joining the Spurs.

The Lakers are still a better team, but this is a great move for them. You have to be dangerously drunk on homerism to think it isn't.

Meh

Hopefully though, this will push the owners to resign Ariza and Lamar. Knowing that we need them both back to repeat.

Not saying a BIG BIG free agent like Wade or Lebron, but this move hurts them even adding two medium guys that, with Duncan, Parker, Manu, could get them back to challenging for a couple of years - Joe Johnson, Josh Howard, Mike Miller, Ray Allen, Raja Bell, Marvin Williams, Linus Kleiza are some names that could've made TD, TP, MG solid. RJ is a nice addition but not at 15m for 2010-11.

They would've had room to add one 12 mil guy, one 10 mil guy, plus an MLE if they wanted, but now they will only be able to get guys taking 5 mil for instance. That would've added 28m to them plus the 5 guys probably under contract and roster fills, and they'd only be at a few more mil than they spent this year for all that junk they just traded with a much much better roster.

This is way better for LA.

He'll cover a bit for the decline in Ginobli's performance but as long as they do not have anyone to support Duncan in the front court, they are not serious contenders.

I assume they'll line up with

Duncan
Gooden
Jefferson
Ginobli/Finley
Parker

Good line up and worthy WCF opponents but not a threat.
