OK news: Suns trading picks with Oklahoma...

Post#1 » by Traxxe » Wed Jun 24, 2009 8:04 am

By Mike Baldwin
ESPN reported late Tuesday night that the Thunder and Phoenix are rumored to be discussing a trade that would give Oklahoma City two lottery picks Thursday night in the draft.

Ready for the punch line. The Suns want their unprotected pick back that Sam Presti stole from them just a few months on the job from the Kurt Thomas trade two years ago.

According to the report, OKC would get Phoenix’s No. 14 pick while the Suns would get the Thunder’s No. 25 pick late in the first round. It went on to say Presti has an eye on using the pick on Ohio State center B.J. Mullens.

Is it a good deal? It depends.

Phoenix might dismantle. The pick Phoenix would get back could be extremely valuable in the 2010 draft, which figures to be much more loaded with star prospects. What if the Suns tear things apart and have a top 10 pick next season?

If the deal is made, who does Presti select with the final lottery pick?

Mullens would be a project. He was a major disappointment last season as a freshman with the Buckeyes. But many scouts feel he has a lot of upside, although it might be two or three years before you could fairly evaluate someone like Mullens.

But what if Presti ends up using the pick to take someone like Pitt’s beast DeJuan Blair, who might contribute immediately, giving the Thunder some much needed inside muscle?

For now, it’s only a rumor. But if Presti does get Phoenix’s pick it’s a sign he’s confident the team is closer to putting all the pieces together, even if he has to wait a year or two to let someone like Mullens develop.

If this turns out to be the case we would trade #14 for #25. Then get our pick back for next year. Hell yeah. I'm all about that.

There is a chance Daye or a point guard is still around we want. Odds are I can see us taking Budinger if he is still available.

Signs maybe things are about to blow and we want our pick back because we may be top ten next year.

****

I should note that this is from the Oklahoman which is a big paper. Not some blog despite what the link looks like.

I have no doubt this is the rumor that ihateginobili was talking about yesterday.

Am I right, ihateginobili?

Was this the big piece that is getting moved by the team?

This might be related to IHG's rumor.

if we get our unprotected pick, we have all the reason in the world to trade all three: Amare, Nash & Shaq to whatever brings us more picks and young talent...

if we do that trade, none of them would be in the suns when the season starts.

If we move our #14 for their #25 and our pick for 2010, does that mean we're piling picks to rebuild? If we rebuild then maybe we're going to move 2 or all of our Big 3 and not make playoffs. We may come away with a lottery pick next draft then.

clearly a sign that we are looking to blow up and start again....

ive been saying all along that there is no point blowing up this year as we dont get our own pick anyways....

if this happens then i can only assume that we wanted to get pick 5 from the wiz in the amare deal as rumoured on realgm, it fell through and we are now going to plan B.....

if that would be the case then I can see amare going for youth, shaq going for capspace and nash going out of respect to him not wanting to rebuild

barnes goes, hill doesnt resign, we scrub it up badly next season and then use our lottery pick next year and start again ..................

hmmmm

This move would be so bad that it would rival the stupidity of giving up next year's pick in the first place. Our pick next year isn't likely to be much higher than #14. Even if we go into full rebuiilding mode, we're probably not going to be one of the worst teams in the league. Chances are it's not going to be a top ten pick.

So the trade would just mean that we force ourselves to pick a year later around the same range for no real reason.

This would be only be a good move if we could swing another trade that would get us a high pick from this draft. If not, pass.

If they trade Shaq, Nash, and Amare for future picks and talent we will not be a good team at all next year.

Probably 5 to 10 range in a deeper draft. Plus we may be able to trade for picks next year too. Like say do the Wizards deal and get next year's first from them. Etc. Etc.

We wouldn't be a good team, but we'd still have a lot of talented guys left and a good coach. I predict we'd be a mediocre team. It was often the case towards the end of the season that the bench was outplaying the starters. Don't forget that Lakers game where we were without Amare and Nash and beat the Lakers in LA.

ihateginobili,

Without getting too specific for obvious reasons, can you just reveal whether the big piece getting moved is the # 14 pick or one of the players currently on the roster without naming the player?

Thanks.

I will re-post this in-case ihateginobili didn't read the other post in this thread or in the other threads regarding this rumor. (Mine was on the previous page of this thread)

^man I told you to stop asking, he'll post what he can. we lost the last insider because of constant hassling, do you want to lose another before the season even starts?

It was flushed out last time via the web/RealGM, so just BE PATIENT

yeah but how specific does it need to be, it's really a yes (Nash, Amare or Shaq) or no (#14) isn't it?

it's a frustrating time for sure, and all I can say is the Wiz deal was a surprise and may have thrown a spanner in the works
