OT: Yi > Rubio or Yi < Rubio?

Post#1 » by campybatman » Thu Jun 25, 2009 5:08 pm

Just curious, does anyone believe that one will be a better player than the other in X years? Someday, a regular starter in the league, an eventual All-Star. What's the best case scenario for either player?

Funny, remember how a lot of Boston fans didn't want to draft Yi Jianlian with the fifth pick in 2007, if Boston kept the pick. And you've that same disinterest toward Ricky Rubio, hypothetically speaking, if Ainge were to somehow acquire the second pick from Memphis. He hasn't... I'm just saying...

Surely, one of them will "make it" in the NBA, you think? One thing's for certain, they both certainly must get stronger, bulk up.

I know there's a lot of Hype around Rubio, but I really think the kid is going to be good. He held is own against the best competition in the world last summer at age 17/18.
He has to get stronger, work on his jump shot, work on defense, and learn how to adjust to the NBA game, but in time I believe he will develop into a very good player.

Minny would be a good fit for him playing with Big Al, Love, Gomes, pick # 6. Pretty solid young core.

People are so quick to jump on the Rubio bandwagon. The PG position is one of the toughest positions to learn in the NBA and be successful at. Rubio is 18, its gonna take him awhile to develop, while Yi was thrown in a starting role his first year.

Well, all three were selected no lower than sixth. I'm presuming that Rubio won't fall out of the top five, considering you'll have a team willing to trade up like New York.

And it has been awhile since there has been a standout international player during the 2000's since Yao Ming. Andrea Bargnani is maybe the only other international lottery pick in this decade who could reach standout status one day. I don't think he has reached his plateau yet. But, standout status for him is different from what it is for Yao. In Yao's case, he's a perennial All-Star. I just meant that, perhaps, Bargnani could make a few All-Star games as a reserve.

Well FWIW I would say Rubio > Bargs. And Danillo > Bargs as well in the future if he can stay healthy.

I reckon it depends on the player's skill set and the type of offense the team he's on runs. I would take Bargnani over Rubio if both were in this year's draft. Bargnani has size, can shoot and creates a mismatch at either forward position. But his lack of toughness and seemingly inability to rebound effectively, hurts him at center. Conversely, I could take a chance on Rubio but only as a player I develop, not start as a rookie.

Rubio could start on a team that has no expectations for the upcoming season. Actually I think he should start day 1 if those were the circumstances. But I agree, on a team competing for the playoffs, he should only be a bench player right now.

Bargnani just doesn't strike me as a player that would be very important on a great team. Rubio could be IMO.

Bargnani intrigues me because he has the talent already to surpass his current game. Much like Rondo, it's solely on him to reach that potential. If the talent's there and you fail to reach your ceiling. It's you to blame, not anyone else. Coaching helps, but it's still your talent. You've to realize that talent. I think Bargnani's slow start is much to do with his transition from playing in Europe to the style of play of the NBA and varieties of defenses. He must get more comfortable. I don't know, his size and his ability to move as he can is Nowitzki like. And he carries more weight than Nowitzki. Will be interesting to see if his game raises another level if Bosh is traded. Probably, the only way his game can... They don't complement each other well.

Well, a bad team will likely be the team that selects Rubio so I can see him starting as a rookie. Sure. I just don't get the impression from some of his videos that he can come into the league like LeBron or Dwight and have an immediate impact on the league. Speaking not of degree of talent but his lack of a "NBA-ready" body. They both had that going for them; they could physically handle the rigors of the competition and schedule. I wonder how prepared is Rubio to that task. On the other hand, Jason Williams (number fifty-five) took the NBA by storm as a rookie and he was skinny too. So it depends... Maybe he could start with Boston. I mean like Williams with Sacramento, Rubio would have the talent in front of him to succeed, or mask his flaws, in his first season.

Rubio is my boy, he is getting very underated on these boards. He will be better than Yao in 3 years.
