NBA approves Suns/Cav trade (No 46th pick!)

Post#1 » by Mr. Sun » Thu Jun 25, 2009 5:44 pm

CLEVELAND -- The Cavaliers have completed their trade for Shaquille O'Neal, having gotten the league office to approve it this morning. But it did require a tweak that impacts tonight's NBA Draft.

On a technicality, the Cavs could not send the Phoenix Suns their second round pick, the 46th overall, in addition to Sasha Pavlovic and Ben Wallace plus cash to complete the trade. So the Cavs will now keep that pick and instead send the Suns next season's second round pick.

That selection, though, is protected if it is in the top 40 picks. If it is, the Suns will get the Cavs second round pick in 2011.

It was held up because the Cavs already had a standing deal with the Miami Heat involving the 46th pick. The Cavs got it from the Bulls two years ago and it was involved in the trade last year to get Darnell Jackson. The Miami Heat ended up with the Cavs' second round pick, No. 60, in that trade. In the swap for Jackson the Heat were assured the lower of the Cavs' two second round picks and to make that deal they had to promise they would not trade either pick.

Unemphatic Wow. Why bother with a mid second rounder. If there was someone we wanted that bad, there are teams that would sell theirs for a costco gift card. If we're blowing up the team, we should have gotten their first rounder. It barely holds any value as it is, since it's the dead last in the first round, but at least it gives us a chance to gamble.

Just a thought: Why can't the Cav's just pick for us?

^Hahahaha. I would actually prefer that. Ferry hasn't done as badly as Kerr. He didn't exactly strike gold with the last two picks, but Gibson and Hickson are definitely useable players.

They'd just take who Kerr wanted if they did that.

It was a joke. We're saying that we trust Ferry to make a better selection than Kerr.

Shaq said today that he hasn't talk to anyone about this trade, he hasn't talk to Steve Kerr nor anyone from the Cavs. So in his mind he is not traded yet. This is according to Dennis Scott a close friend of Shaq to talk to Shaq about 10 mins ago.

Can anyone explain why Miami would put that stipulation on a pick owned by Cleveland? As it stands, the Heat have forced a team in their conference to keep #46 rather than the pick going to a team in the West.

I think it's just a general NBA rule when it comes to trading picks.

Makes sense to put restrictions on trading picks that could possibly become another team's given where they fall, but it was already determined that Miami had #60 and not #46. You're probably right, but it's an odd rule if it's true

Well I'm going by what 3D said on the Radio and he just talk to Shaq and had him on speakers so you never know it could have been Shaq just messing with everyone.
