I love Danny's candor but...
Did he really need to shoot his mouth off in public about Rondo's shortcomings? Didn't he just make Rondo's trade value go down not to mention making it more difficult for the celts to re-up Rondo? I know the celts hold the cards contract wise but why not say that stuff to rondo in private instead of broadcasting it publically. Rondo's agent is now pissed off. Either Danny already has a deal in place for Rondo and is trying to justify the trade in advance of it happening ( ie he doesn't care about repercussions since Rondo is gone) or he temporarily went insane or as Bob Ryan specualtes, there is worse stuff out there about rondo so Danny decided to admit there had been some problems. No matter what the scenario is , I woke up this morning and realized that Rondo may be out the door whether we like it or not. Either we're trading him now or he's going to walk the moment he becomes a free agent and in the meantime you're going to have an unhappy player on your hands. This is not a good situation
"Now, there's a steal by Bird..!"

Danny's not an idiot. It was to hurt his contract extension value or to motivate him to actually practice this summer.

I think Danny's smart and in control of the situation. This is not a last minute move- There's a lot of time to heal any possible hurt feelings from Danny's statements (which were peppered with compliments and affection between the criticisms).
Everything Danny said was accurate. Danny is trying to move Rondo toward further maturity. He wants more consistent effort from him. The fact that he said these things publicly can only be seen as motivational and that Ainge has enough confidence in his relationship with Rajon that the team won't be hurt by these few mild criticisms.

If rondo isn't practicign jumpers, then he deserves to be publicly insulted. It would mean he isn't listening to the coaches, which is the complaint about him.

He didn't shoot his mouth of in public about Rondo's shortcomings. He answered questions and declined to pretend like Rondo was the best player in the NBA and had no areas where he could improve - which would have been obviously dishonest and in conjunction with all the rumors would have presented the impression that he thought Rondo was trash and needed to be traded.

I think Ainge knew exactly what he was doing.

Re: I love Danny's candor but...
Dannys assesment about Rondo was RIGHT ON. Even Rondo knows he needs to work on some aspects of his game, and we simply will not unload him for anyone in a trade.
Please note that if Rondo was working on his jumper everyday in practice facility, this probably would not be happening.
That said, I DO wish Danny was preparing for the draft rather than entertaining the media with damage control. I guess we really arent going to have anthing to look forward to during tonights draft...

I didn't hear it directly, but wasn't Rondo on 'EEI about a week ago, and wasn't he breezily dismissing the reports that he'd been late for playoff games, saying he wasn't really and the team didn't mind? If so, those aren't exactly the words of a mature guy taking responsibility.
I'm hoping it's just tough love Danny's dishing out and Rondo will be here for years to come.

The thing I like about Ainge is that he's not a politician. He doesn't sugar-coat anything and everything. He tells it like he is. Call it motivational or whatever, but he's a straight-shooter when it comes to the players. What he's NOT going to do is tell the world what his intentions are in regards to trades. So while there's no public chatter going on right now doesn't mean there isn't something going on behind closed doors.
That being said, I'd be happy if the starting five returned next year, so long as the bench was deepened. Let's not forget that the C's still won 62 games last year..

It clearly shows that he is not trying to trade him. You do not publicly devalue a player you are attempting to get value for. Obviously not about a contract either as that will be determined by his stats relative to others who play the position and the market, not by the fact that the Celtics have a coach unable to deal with the teams players. Simply an attempt to challenge/motivate him to be more consistent in the areas they want him to focus on. Not sure it will work but I think Rondo has that "I'll show him" attitude and it may pay off. Certainly can't hurt as Rondo will be in a contract year and financially would be impacted if he dogged it.

Agreed. I can't help shake the feeling, however, that Danny is bungling this much the same way he did with the KG injury...
It's still 17 to 11!!!!

I'm with the OP. Regardless of whether Ainge is completely right and honest in his assessment of Rondo (and it does seem spot on), it is never a good idea to devalue your assets publicly.

Re: I love Danny's candor but...
Man Danny was telling the truth about Rondo and if Rondo can't handel it or any player for that matter can't handel it then I don't want him on my team. But I think Danny came out and said what he did because he know's Rondo can take it like a man. So of you thinks this is to drive down Rondo asking price. I think it to raise Rondo play. Rondo the type of kid that will use this as motivations. So I don't think Rondo will go into some type of shell nor do I see him demanding a trade. I see him coming out next season with a chip on his shoulder and that can only help the Cs. Plus if Rondo is balling out of his mind next season that only helps his trade value.
I really feel the Cs don't want to trade Rondo but they wanted to see what they can get for him since his value is high right now. But Danny had turn down some really good deal because it wasn't what he wanted. I still stand by the fact that I think Danny wants D-Wade. To get D-Wade he need Rondo to take it to the next level to push his trade value even higher.

Possibly the ballsiest way to enter contract negotiation ever on Danny's part. Should be interesting one way or another.
