Is the Roster set if...
... Boozer/Korver opt in, Resign Memo 3yr x 28m -32m, match whatever Detroit offers Paul, and bring back Price after he doesn't get an offer from another team... .
So we're left with a 14 man roster, and well over the luxury cap, but roster flexability and a pretty solid lineup if you ask me:
Deron - Price - Maynor
Brewer - Korver
CJ - AK - Harpring
Boozer - Milsap - Suton
Memo - Kosta - Fesenko
I'll let you nerds crunch the numbers, but i really think Utahs brass would be happy with this squad and would feel relatively comfortable going into the luxury tax assuming this team performs like they really can.

That would put us somewhere in-between 82 and 90 million--too much if there is no championship coming. I think in that scenario we have to dump someone even if the front-office doesn't want to.

It wouldn't be the end of the world to go into next season with a $80M+ payroll. At the trade deadline you can then move Harpring, Korver and/or Boozer. $80M is still $80M, but the luxury tax only kicks in at the end of the year IIRC.

But it would be to go out of the all-star break if we are not looking like MAJOR contenders.

If Harping retire then his salary might not count against Luxury tax. That would save about 7 million. If Okur is resigned for 5 years 40 million then maybe his starting salary would be around 7 million that would save about 2 million. Nobody offer Milsap more then Mid level then Jazz resign him for 5.5 million. Our first round draft cost about 1.3 million. Price is not resigned. I think the jazz would be slightly under luxury tax enough to sign a couple of player from CBA like Pg Conley to replace Price and sf - pf Noel to replace Harping for 500 thousand each.
The jazz lineup PG Williams, Conley , Maynor Sg Brewer, Korver Sf Miles. Kirilenko, Noel Pf Boozer, Milsap, Suton C Okur, Kosta, fesenko
This scenario only work if Harping retiring contract does not count against luxury tax. Also luxury tax must stay the same and cann't decrease. Fesenko contract might also have to be traded.

Even if he retires it still counts (see Speedy Claxton, Cuttino Mobley, Raef Lafrentze).

I know it counts against salary cap but still think it might not count against Luxury tax but it still could.babyjax13 wrote:Even if he retires it still counts (see Speedy Claxton, Cuttino Mobley, Raef Lafrentze).

With AK being an expiring next year I think this lineup is realistic. Suton may or may not make the team. If Collins wants to be in a position to battle for a spot he can, as well as Luke Nevill I hope.

Re: Is the Roster set if...
If he retires, I believe it counts against the salary cap (except in special cases) and therefore would also be subject to the luxury tax.... HOWEVER... I think it's standard practice for teams to carry insurance against athletes getting career-ending injuries and the like. Not sure if that would extend to early retirement.
A more likely scenario is that Harpring gets dealt to some team looking to clear 2010 space for the cheapest possible return the Jazz can get under the rules of the CBA.
Also, you're smoking crack if you think Memo will opt out of a $9M year to make $8M/year (based on your 5 years, $40M). Okur will seek at least $10M/year, and Millsap will get offers starting at $7M/year.
Detroit is probably thinking they can land (at least) two of Gordon, Millsap, Turkoglu. They've got so much cap space it's ridiculous. Their committed salary after they waive Oberto will be right about $30M.

Your most like right. It was wishful thinking anyway.HappyProle wrote:If he retires, I believe it counts against the salary cap (except in special cases) and therefore would also be subject to the luxury tax.... Re: Is the Roster set if...
Maybe the jazz could work at a trade with Memphis who has a ton of cap space .We Trade Harping to Memphis then Harping retires. Harping is on Memphis cap but they don't pay him. They agree to give Memphis the best of the picks between Memphis and Knicks pick increase their chances of winning the draft lottery. Utah still should get a good pick because both the Knick and Memphis should suck. Memphis gets better chance of getting the first pick.If Harping wants to retire then he might be willing to help the out. Utah then could promise him some job in orgainization for 3 million maybe public relation for one year to pay off Harping.

I'd love to see a trade/waive/re-sign deal with Harpring.

Well... first news are good news if you as me: Korver's just opted in. Good wing player at a very good price. I expect him to be healthy and to play more this season. I always saw him as a starter in Jazz roster.
