The Cavs need to figure out how to get an athletic wing player who can defend and another athletic shooting post player who can defend. It is certainly a tall order. I really think the Cavs had a chance to get a steal with DeJuan Summers, but instead we draft a guy that is not NBA ready. Please tell me why Ferry is such a great GM? I understand the O'Neal win now mindset, but why do you follow that up with a guy so raw he will probably not play in the NBA for a couple of years. As the announcers said, this is a guys you can grab in the second round.

everyone said we got outfinished against Orlando. How does Shaq help us finish when he can't play the last few minutes because he can't shoot a free throw?
We'll need to finish in the first three quarters. I agree with the general assessment that Shaq is better than what we got.. and he can play with his back to the basket unlike anyone else we have.. but I don't see him pushing us over the top.

I see much more improvement elsewhere.

I think the Shaq move is a sign that the Cavs want to seriously compete. If not then why not just keep Wallace and Pavlovic. The Cavs didn't really lose the game in the 4th quarter. Instead, it was usually in the 3rd quarter when they got complacent. Shaq will open up more opportunities for Lebron, but Ferry's work is not done yet.

He will be there for LeBron to dump the ball off to.. but he will absolutely cut off some of the penetration. LeBron better be working on the jump shot.

Plus Shaq will not be in the game late in the 4th or he will be fouled. It would hard to feel good about a close game coming to down to free throws with the guys we'll have on the court.

This isn't Shaq from 5 or 10 years ago. This is Shaq now. He's only going to play 20-25 minutes.

Yes, he is better than we had. But he does not instantly make us the team to beat. He's just not that good anymore. Sorry, but its the truth. Don't bother quoting statistics from last season in the Suns running offense either. A lot of players looked a WHOLE lot better than they are statistically on that squad. I shouldn't have to point out that Mike Brown is no offensive guru either. I hope he can adapt and coach the players he's got for once instead of it having to be his way. For all his defensive prowess Orlando made his defense look like swiss cheese.

Shaq will help us more on the defensive end. That is if the opponent hasn't already beaten him down court. Dwight Howards statement rang the truest so far. The Cavs got Shaq to try and stop him. Z is too soft and Andys best defense is flopping. Shaq will put a body on Howard but we may have to leave him downcourt and play 4 on 5 on offense!

Do you mean at the beginning of the third? Because at halftime the other teams coaches made adjustments and ours didn't?

Lets hope that Ferry is still working. This team needs more than an aging center.

We need a guard with some length. We still need a complete power forward because Varejao has holes in his game.

You guys all love Delonte West, but if you have to give up him and/or Varejao to acquire either of the above then you gotta do it.
Either of the above makes you a better more complete team. What else do we have to give up?

I don't understand the logic of some of these comments (and they clearly do not belong in a thread entiled J. R. Smith). But the fact is that Shaq does not make it tougher for LeBron to drive, he just doesn't. He has to be guarded unlike players like Wallace and Varejao who's men always lagged off of them to help on LeBron. Not to mention the fact that who cares if LeBron even scores anywhere near as much, the Cavs needed a post presence who could finish inside. We haven't had one of those is quite some time.

I know this is a J.R. Smith thread but off the subject. Shaq will be a BIG asset if used correctly. Brown needs to be a HEAD coach. Did he learn anything from the Orlando series? Yes Ferry's work is not done yet. Shaq & Z at center, with sometime filler, will work fine. Resign Andy, add a back-up & continue to develop J.J. Mo & Delonte are good start at guard, but we need height. So we need to add a PF (if no Andy this is top piority), a big guard to play D. Then finish roster with guys from last years team. (Joe Smith, Wally, Sasha ?, Big Ben, who knows).
