What bigs will the Kings target in free agency?

Post#1 » by sackings916 » Fri Jun 26, 2009 10:52 pm

List of 09 big men FA's-
Chris Andersen - Good fit and brings what we lack, but another team Andersen prefers would probably offer the same or better. He's 30 so a long term deal would be risky.
Antonio McDyess - Wants to win now
Rasheed Wallace- same as McDyess
Lamar Odom - too much $
Charlie Villanueva - same as Odom
David Lee - too much $
Chris Wilcox - bad fit
Marcin Gortat - He hasnt shown enough consistency for me, but he'd be a good pickup. I'd be hesitant to give the whole MLE though.
Drew Gooden - bad fit
Carlos Boozer - too much $
Paul Milsap- he'd be a good fit but probably cost too much
Anderson Varejao- he's a good fit and they've shown interest in him in the past

Out of that list Chris Andersen would probably be my 1st choice and Varejao 2nd with Gortat 3rd. Andersen's shotblocking and energy is perfect for this team, but his age concerns me. Varejao is one of the best at defending the pick and roll, his stats dont show his worth imo.

We won't get any of them. Both Varejao and Gortat will receive good offers from other contending teams, we'd have to beat it meaning most likely going over the MLE to get either one. Not worth it.

Why cant we just leave his name in the past........ :noway:

Anyway...I would love Varejao, but I do not see why he would want to go from starting on a contending team to a backup on the worst team in the league.

Gortat will be our best option as an athletic big off the bench, but it will have to be an overpay..But thats what we do so...

We should just trade Beno for Diop...Exact same contract...Gives us a shot blocking center off the bench and gives the Bobcats insurance in case Felton walks and lets Augistine take over point duties.

$$$$

While I don't think he's worth 10 million a year. That's crazy, I do think he should garner something above the MLE. an average of 7.5 million a year. Work something out to get him a 5 year 37-38 million dollar deal. That Sounds about right to me, honestly. And he'd fit nicely here.

I know we show interest in Gortat, but I doubt we land him.

Varejo is simply not worth the money for a team like us. We should get Gortat for sure and that should be about it. I say we wait around until a star gets upset and we use our capspace for a trade! I hope Chris Paul hates marti gras...

Varejao has gotta be one of the most overrated players right now. No way he is worth 7-8 million a year, and the Kings should definitely not be targeting him.

I like him, but in now way would I pay him 7-8 to be a back up. Then when Spence and JT's contract is up we would have to start their contracts at 8 just because their back up is making that much they would "deserve" to make more. So over paying 1 player will lead to poosibly over paying 3.

YEah, I understand the reservations about Varejao.

Personally, I'd like to deal Noc for Mohammed to fill our back-up C position.

Free up the logjam at the 3 and fill a need simultaneously.

The short answer: no one good.

The long answer: Anyone that's a good player is going to want something more than a 1-year deal. If you do the math, the Kings are currently on the hook for just under $40.5mil for the 2010-2011 season (that includes Evans & Casspi). If you factor in $3.5mil for a draft pick (in this years draft no one but the #1 & #2 picks got more than 3.5mil) that puts us at $44mil going into the summer. Thus giving the Kings somewhere between $11mil & $16mil to go after free agents with. Using the MLE on anyone bumps that down to $5-10mil. Which would you rather have: $11-$16mil in cap space or someone like Varejao & $5-10mil? Easy choice in my mind.

Of course this can change if the Kings dumped Nocioni for a package that included expirings or found someone dumb enough to take back Beno for a package that included expirings. Neither one of those things, however, seems likely. Thus, the Kings need to sign some really crappy guys to league minimum contracts.

Gortat will not command that kind of money as similar players did in the past because of both the overall financial situation AND the impending FA stakes next year. There are many GM's that are planning on capspace for then - even if they are fooling themselves. If anyone pays him more than 3.5 per for 2 years plus an option third then he isn't worth it. I don't feel that this is such a big need that we need to overpay at this point. I'd rather sit on the capspace and look to do a better deal near the dealine for someone like Bosh with a re-sign agreement already in place. Give our new coach and one year further along players - who BTW are all playing together after a camp for the first time - a little time to show a guy like Bosh that he has a legit shot at a ring here in the next 3-6 years.

FA Bigs Honorable Mentions:

Francisco Elson
Hakim Warrick
Linas Kleiza
Leon Powe
Glen Davis
Sean May
Brandon Bass
James Singleton
Channing Frye

I kind of like the idea of getting Elson. He's cheap and adds height to our rotation. Ideal for Hawes' backup IMO. The Kings have inquired about Klieza several times through trade the last few years, so maybe he's the guy...
can we just get a new arena already...

But the reality of wanting anyone that we know about is that we have to overpay simply because a) we are Sacramento and b) we suck.

Maybe it was simply because I didn't know as much or follow basketball as closely, but players like Pollard, Keon Clark, Jimmy Jackson, Veron Maxwell, etc. were all guys that couldn't get a job anywhere else. They were has beens or simply guys that no one has ever really given a chance. If we want any FA those are the guys we have to target and it will take an amazing GM to find those guys for us. Unless we want to pay 5-6 mil for guys like Beno, Moore, Gortat, etc. we will have to go for guys that are happy to simply get a training camp invitation.

Guys making 1-2 mil but end up being great bench players. Those are the guys we need to find about. Personally we really shouldn't sign any player that the general public has ever heard about.

Warrick, Powe, Davis, Bass, Kleiza will all take the full MLE if no more to entice to Sacramento. No Thank you.

Elson, May, Singleton maybe, but again I'd rather not have us spend money.

Frye hates Sacramento

The perfect guy to target wouldn't be via free agency but via trade...Marcus Camby. I've wanted him in a Kings uniform for years because of his rebounding and shot blocking. With adding Blake Griffin to their front court there are too may bigs (Randolph & Kaman) and not enough minutes in Clipperland. Camby is older and can mentor Hawes and Thompson while contributing on an expiring contract. Nocioni for Camby works contract wise but will Clips accept? I think this trade rounds out both teams rosters better. Resign McCants & Diogu and no free agents signings.

Kings Roster:

Beno Udrih/Tyreke Evans/Sergio Rodriguez
Kevin Martin/Rashard McCants
Francisco Garcia/Donte Greene/Omri Casspi
Jason Thompson/Ike Diogu/Kenny Thomas
Spencer Hawes/Marcus Camby/Jon Brockman

I think we'll be a much improved team with the coaching changes and new focus. We'll have expirings after the season (especially Camby & Thomas) and we can target Joe Johnson/others, use our 2010 lottery pick on BPA/need. If Evans ends up being the star we all hope he'll become then we're a contender again.

Camby would be amazing off the bench.

Stupidest thing we could do right now is throw down MLE money on players that while they may be solid will never be high potential players. We're not at the position to start filling up "holes" with mid level guys. Gortat, Gooden, and Sidewhow Bob in particular. Obviously the Kings should at least attempt to make a run at Boozer, the others? Ah, just go away. Young teams need to be as flexible as possible while maybe reaching for guys that could pan out on the cheap (Diogu). As much as I like Chris Anderson he fits in the same boat.
