imagine if Shaq would've slipped on some ice back before the '92 draft and tore up his MCL, probably would've fallen to pick #3

Shaq
KG
Lebron (he would've forced his way to MN to play w/ Shaq & KG)
Mayo
Rubio

Gordon will be recognized as a better player than Mayo in 2 years time. He had a better rookie year considering their situations.

His vertical is 40". Super athlete Demar Derozan's is 38".

Flynn for Fernandez sort of writes itself, doesn't it?

From Draft Express, it sure looks like Kahn mucked this up...

There was a small chance that agent Dan Fegan would be able to convince Ricky Rubio (and especially his family) to pay his way out of living in suburban Barcelona to play for very little money in Minnesota. Unfortunately, that small chance evaporated once incoming GM David Kahn decided to select Jonny Flynn with the following pick.

Rubio is for now refusing to attend Minnesota’s press conference, while Kahn continues to swear that he’s excited about the possibility of playing both point guards together. This is an instance that having a coach in the war room really could have helped, as there is really no way that Flynn and Rubio can be considering anything less than the worst defensive backcourt in the NBA, and they really don’t complement each other offensively either.

What’s strange is how surprisingly unaggressive New York was while all this was going on. They really tried hard to move up in the days and weeks leading up to draft night, but decided to take a wait and see approach once it became clear that Rubio would slip to 5. It appears likely that Kahn initially took Rubio with the intent of “auctioning off the pick,” in the words of one source close to the situation, but it seems like the market isn’t quite as robust as initially anticipated.

Rubio’s comments after the draft made it very clear that he has no problem going back to Spain, and there will likely be a number of lucrative offers coming his way from the direction of Real Madrid and other top European teams once he returns home. This is likely going to be a long and drawn out process, and it’s very possible that we see teams like Dallas, New Jersey, New York and Indiana get back into the mix.

from kahn presser, kahn mentioned us being willing to wait for him to fegan in the afternoon BEFORE the draft and got a very positive response from the family.
the buyout issue may be the legitimate reason for the hesitancy on rubio's part, especially if his contract is now tied up with the govt.

Gordon is very good. I like him alot. I think he and OJ will be very good players in this league for a long time, but Gordon did NOT have a better rookie year than OJ. Alot of people are downing OJ because he did struggle a bit after the allstar break, but he finished the season very strong, the same way he started. He had a great rookie year.

Anyway, it's a shame that Rubio is making things difficult for you guys.

I posted this on another thread, but I didn't see this one. So, here it is:
I really like the combination of Rubio/Flynn. Here's how I think it could work out:
-On offense, Rubio would play the position of a true point guard. He would be the main facilitator of the offense. With Flynn, he can take advantage of slashing to the basket without the ball and have Rubio make some passes to Flynn in those situations. Flynn can really take advantage of his vertical for jumpshots and when going toward the rim. Also, Flynn could do some things on the perimeter. He could use his vertical ability (again) and make some perimeter jump-shots for us.

-Defense is really the easiest place to figure out how to play the Rubio/Flynn combo. Rubio guards the 2 guard. He was defensive player of the year in his league at the mere age of 18. 18!!!! people. Flynn would be able to play defense against the opponent's point guard. He would be able to match up better with his size and would use his physicality and relentlessness to play tough defense.

Take it for what it's worth, but I think this is a really solid possibility.

Kahn on whether Flynn can defend taller point guards:
“I’ve noticed there has been a lot of attention paid to the offensive end and how this would fit. But frankly from a defensive standpoint, this is a very solid fit. Jonny clearly is capable of guarding almost anybody because if you did see the workout he was amazing even against a guy like Tyreke Evans who had five inches on him. But he simply, I think, can become one of the best on the ball defenders among point guards in the league."

And Rubio is supposed to be a good defender too, add Carney and Brewer and :D

How many 5'11' guys do you see guarding the Kobe Bryants, T-Macs, and Ray Allen's of league.

Anyone who calls Carney a good defender immediately loses their credibility. He gets bumped off of screens way too easily, and is too weak to lock and trail.

We get a stop or strip/steal, Carney sprints to the other end of the court and zooms past everyone. Two points!

Portland, again with this...

Look, if your seventh man is too good to give up for the #6 pick in any draft, then truly you have the best team ever assembled.

You have Bayless and Webster to also to play minutes at back up shooting guard. Fernandez is already 24. Portland needs a PG. Flynn is a great point guard prospect. Do you really believe Fernandez 10 ppg is that irreplaceable that you wouldn't trade him for a player widely believed to be the second best point guard in this draft?
