No Roster Spots Available...

Post#1 » by Krapinsky » Sat Jun 27, 2009 4:55 am

Under contract (presumably)

PG: Flynn, Rubio1, Telfair, Brown2 (4)
SG: Ellington (1)
SF: Brewer, Gomes (2)
PF: Love, Smith, Songalia, Madsen (5)
C: Jefferson, Thomas, Pecherov (3)
_______________________________
Total = 15 roster spots

1 - Assuming he reaches a buyout and plays this year; either way, we need to keep a roster spot open for him for now

2 - Assuming he exercises his player option
___________________________________________________________
It's clear we need a wing. Seems we have a few options:

A) Buyout someone and resign Carney (not a great fit, but would be cheap)
B) Buyout someone and sign a FA (e.g. Barnes, Wafer?)
B) Trade for a player/s that can shoot (e.g., w/ GS: Belinelli, Azubuike, Morrow; w/ PTL Outlaw, Webster; w/ SAC: Garcia?)

Any good ideas?

Martell Webster could be a good fit.

I forgot about Cardinal. That means we have 15 already. I will edit. We'll have to trade or buy someone out.

Hard to see them signing any FA's (other than Carney). Brown is clearly superfluous at this point. I wonder what kind of wing they could get for a Brown/Smith type package.

We could make the obvious trade of Craig Smith to Portland for their Ike Diogu TE and then Flynn for Rudy Fernandez straight up (we should have enough cap room to absorb his salary). This would open a roster spot to sign Carney to the minimum, and could really help in convincing Rubio to come over immediately.

Roster after trade:

PG: Rubio, Telfair, Brown (3)
SG: Fernandez, Carney, Ellington (3)
SF: Brewer, Gomes, Cardinal (3)
PF: Love, Songalia, Madsen (3)
C: Jefferson, Thomas, Pecherov (3)

We would have a much more balanced roster and could presumably flip our expirings for a defensive 7-footer to be our third big.

Well If I was the Wolves I would try to find someway to trade or buy out Madsen,Cardinal,Collins,Williams and Brown if at all possible.I think that we atleast need another center and shooting graud back up or started.I would look at these FA to try and sign....

SG:
Klye Korver
Franciso Garcia( trade if he resigns with the Kings)
Ronnie Price

SF:
Matt Barnes
Luther Head

Centers:
Marcin Gortat
Zaza Pachulia

I don't know how much money we real have but we should be able to sign two of these free agents. My picks would be Gortat and Korver.Who both would come to the wolves with a promise of increased playing time. Also I think Korver is from Iowa so that helps.

Starting Line Up 09-10:
C:Marcin Gortat
PF:Al Jefferson
SF:Corey Brewer
SG:Kyle Korver
PG:Jonny Flynn

Plus then you have a pretty strong bench with Love,Telfair,Gomes,Ellotion,Sengolia...ect

I think we'd have to overpay for Gortat. Korver, I believe, is not unrestricted. Even so, I don't think he's a great long term fit, and we would just be wasting our money trying to put a band aid on a stab wound. I like Webster/Morrow/Outlaw/Azubuikie b/c they are young, on cheap contracts, and could grow with the team.

2 quick ideas without looking up contracts and simply blah for blah type trades
Smith + madsen to LAL for ammo(meh)?
I think smith + madsen is just under 5, and ammo is like 5.3? So saves them some cash? Maybe like.
Smith + Madsen(prearranged buyout @ 2.3m) + 1m cash for Ammo + 2nd?, Saves LAL a bunch of cash and helps us consolidate a bit. Resign carney, after LAL buys out Madsen

Songalia for uh vujacic(gag)?

I hate both Ammo and Vujacic, but we need more 2/3 play and I think this sort of does it?

I don't know about that one. Obviously, I haven't seem him play any time lately (b/c he hasn't), but Ammo is a running joke around Lakers fans and players alike. I think Smith has more value than that.

I'd like to move Smith for one of the Warriors swingmen if possible.

That is correct, we will like Lee and Nate on whatever other team the knicks trade them to. This way, when they are on whatever other team, MN doesn't have to hear the nonsense of them being traded to the Wolves AND the Knicks will have most likely used their "best" (extremely relative term) trade chips and they will realize they don't have enough to get Rubio with those two.

Probably trade is easiest way to get some 2/3 help. Any teams short at the PF position and have a lot of 2/3 type players? NJ? Cle? Milw? Atl? Memph? OKC? GS? Pho?

It may be a bit light, but I think the value and fit might be about right with some adjustments. Also, the 2nd could be the MEM pick owed to LAL from the Gasol trade which should be an early 2nd.
