Marquis Daniels Anyone?

Post#1 » by ALL HAIL » Sat Jun 27, 2009 4:13 pm

Those who have read my posts know that I think Kidd would be perfect for us, however, if Kidd doesn't float your boat, I also think that Marquis Daniels would be ideal as well.

Before I tell you why, let me first say that we (OBVIOUSLY) need to resign Odom, Ariza, and Brown. We also need to (somehow) shave one or more of Morrison, Walton, and/or Vujacic's contracts. I had to state the obvious because their ineviteably will be those who say that we have to "sign our guys first" and those that say "we can't afford a new guy." We can do it all if we can somehow eliminate Morrison, Walton, or Vujacic (a topic that can be debated somewhere else).

In this thread I'd like opinions about Marquis Daniels.

I think he is an ideal fit in our system. He is almost 6'7 but can guard and play PG, SG, and SF. My only knock on him would be his jumper, which is inconsistent. I'd give him the same deal that we gave Vujacic last summer (3 years, 15 million) or less.

Here's a scouting report:

http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Mar ... iels-2134/

If, hypothetically, we somehow get rid of Morrison and Farmar for nothing in return and sign Daniels, the Lakers would look like this:

PG - Fisher - Daniels - Sun
SG - Bryant - Brown - Vujacic
C - Bynum - Gasol - Mbenga
PF - Odom - Powell
SF - Ariza - Walton

Note: Please don't tell me that Marquis Daniels can't play PG ... especially if you support the idea of Shannon Brown playing PG. Marquis Daniels is much more of a PG than Shannon Brown. Both guys would serve as a very dynamic duo of defensive intensity and versatiliy -- more importantly they would limit our dependency on Vujacic and Walton.

The Lakers don't have the money to get Daniels even if they offload Vujacic's and Morrison's contracts. The MLE is going to Ariza we have Odom's bird rights and most likely the LLE is going to Brown all the Lakers would have to offer Daniels is the minimum.

I don't know if that's true.

Resigning Ariza DOES NOT mean that we can't use our MLE (if that's what you are saying).

The Lakers don't have Ariza's bird rights all they have to resign him with is the MLE.

I've heard that before but how can they have his bird rights if he hasn't been with the team for at least 2 full season.

The bird rights are often traded along with the player. I'm pretty sure we have his bird rights. Shannon's however we don't.

The bird rights are traded with the player. we don't have to use any of our exemptions to resign odom, ariza or brown. the 2 year rule is when you sign a free agent. that said i don't think we will use the mle this year.

Precisely what I thought, but how would a guy like Daniels fit?

He might be a real bargain. Maybe we could get him for 4 mill per?

Even at 4m per however Buss may decline. Look towards trades as methods of improvement you might see something there that's useful to us. Perhaps if you can find a way to move our Morrison+Vujajic for a contract that's maybe long-term but comes at a fair rate you've found your answer.

Those two together have 15m left on the deal. A team with a guy that has maybe a 7-8m a year player for 4 years could consider a deal.

If the bird right situation is correct I still doubt the Lakers will use the MLE maybe a million of it will be used to resign Brown and maybe another million of it to bring in another player if they trade Morrison and Sasha. I would like to see Rush back if that scenario happens.

Kareem Rush? Only played in 25 games last year for Philly, I'd rather have Sasha stay on the team :o .

Can't believe I just said that.

For the price I'd rather have Rush. Player for player I'd take Sasha.

How about Marcus Banks through a Sasha trade?

Ariza's bird rights were traded with him. Most teams want the bird rights traded with player as insurance. Teams trading players don't care about trading the bird rights with the player because they can't transfer them to another player on their team. In the Cook/Evans for Ariza trade Evans Bird rights all players bird rights went with them.

Instead of Daniels though it might be worthwhile going after Kidd. If he honestly and truly wants a ring, he stands no greater shot at both playing time and actually getting that ring than here. Nowhere....

Plus there's no chance he's any slower than Fisher on defense. Besides in our most important match ups against Boston, Cleveland, and Orlando he has a guy he can guard. He'll fit, real well with that new shot he's got and he'll allow us to play open court and half-court basketball efficiently. Good guy to have and he easily is as good of an improvement to us as the additions to other top teams.

I think you know how I feel about J. Kidd Jajwanda ... I think he is almost perfect for this team.

I don't think he should guard PGs anymore though ... that's why if we were to get him, he needs to be on the floor with one of either Brown, Ariza, or Fisher at all times so they can guard the opposing team's PG. I don't think he is COMPLETELY incapable of guarding PGs, I just think the team should be constructed so that he doesn't have that responsiblity.

If Kidd is unavailable or you want to get a better defender but less of a passer and shooter then Marquis Daniels fits the bill to a tee.

If the Lakers cannot shave one or more of the aforementioned contracts then EVERYONE IS RIGHT, we should definitely NOT sign Kidd or Daniels. But if we mangage to dump one or more of those deadweight contracts then we've got to thank God first then IMPROVE this team by signing a guy like Daniels or Kidd that will be in the rotation and can play more than one position.

the marquis as a LAKER part sounds good.

but the fisher, marquis, sun yue part does not.

we get old, inexperienced, inexperienced.

i.e. we will be releasing 2 players who know the triangle. have finals experience. have come up big for us. so we know what we are going to get. but if fish gets old and slow (already there), and marquis doesnt show up for whatever reason, that leaves us with sun back there. not good.

however, if fish does the old part. if farmar does the inconsistent part. we still have a guy that the team feels comfortable with in brown. proven at this point.

In the Scenario I described earlier Brown would be playing SG most of the season Rush at most would be the 3rd SG on the team. He had a tough year last year but when he gets PT he usually does deliver.

I like Daniels as a defender at PG and he's played some good minutes at Indiana to be considered a reliable player but 5 mil per season in this market? I don't think so.
