EDIT: OKAY so new question... How does Tony Battie's trade kicker work?
Is it just his 2009-2010 salary x 10%, and since he's in the last year of his contract that total amount is going to apply to his 2009-2010 salary?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I guess my question is kind of an extension of a lot of what was discussed in this (old) thread about KVH:
viewtopic.php?f=4&t=763437
Basically:
http://www.nj.com/nets/index.ssf/2009/0 ... e_num.html
Dave D'Alessandro is reporting the Nets got 2 trade exceptions in the Vince Carter trade one for $3.75 million and one for $1.2 million.
http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/b ... 1112.story
In the link above this writer is saying he spoke with Otis Smith and the Keyon Dooling trade exception was used to acquire Ryan Anderson.
---
How is it possible that two trade exceptions were created?
edit: I think this has been resolved --->
It seems like the Marcus Williams TPE was used to Acquire Lee... So that would mean the Nets got a $1.2 million TPE when the Magic used their TPE to acquire Anderson and the other $3.75 came from trading VC for Alston and Battie

Re: The Vince Carter trade?
Did the nets still have a TPE from Marcus Williams? I can't remember where the list of existing TPEs is, but it seems at one point they had a TPE of $1.26 million, which they could have used to absorb Lee. They are then sending out Anderson for nothing.

Re: The Vince Carter trade?
I think its actually 3 trades:
#1 - I think Magic first traded Lee to the Nets for the Marcus Williams TPE which expires near the end of July.
#2 - Then we traded Anderson to the Magic for a piece of the Dooling TPE they got last year, thus giving us a $1.2M TPE
#3 - Finally - we traded VC for Alston and Battie, and created a new TPE for 3.75
Basically, we extended the life of the TPE from Marcus Williams which was set to expire. I dont think they have reortedthis correctly, in that Dave D seems tot hink we have 3 TPEs (1.2 marcus, 1.2 Anderson and 3.75 VC trade), but I think we really only have 2 (1.2 anderson and 3.75 VC)

Yeah the Nets did (do?) have the TPE from Marcus Williams, I think in that same article by Dave D. (or maybe it was another Nets beat writer, I do recall reading this and can dig up the article later) he said the Nets still have that TPE though...
When the Magic acquire Ryan Anderson with their TPE do the Nets get a TPE equal to Anderson's contract? That's what another poster on the Nets board was saying but as you can see I have no idea what I'm talking about anymore =D

Im not sure Dave D would really understand the CAP. on the surface, you would think we have 3 TPEs but I think when you get into the details, the only way this could have worked is if we used Marcus Williams - kind of smart considering the Marcu TPe was set to expire in 3 weeks.

Yeah I meant to delete my last post whoops, I wasn't aware that the Marcus Williams TPE was set to expire that soon, so what you said makes sense.
And I agree with you, Dave D, or whatever Nets beats writer probably has less of an understanding on the cap than the posters on RealGM that's why I like to double-check what he and the other beats writers say

Re: The Vince Carter trade?
Battie's Trade Kicker is 10%. HIs remaining salary is $6,292,000 (his 09-10 salary). 10% of that = $629,200. Since this year and next year are equally guaranteed (100%), that number gets split evenly to both the 08-09 cap, and the 09-10 cap. So $314,600 is added when New Jersey is looking at incoming salary. Let's look at this trade from both sides:
Orlando Perspective:
Out:
Battie: $5,746,000
Alston: $4,900,000
Lee: $1,176,240
In:
Carter $14,724,125
$11,822,240 X 1.25 + $100,000 = $14,877,800. So this trade is legal for Orlando
New Jersey Perspective:
Out:
Carter: $14,724,125
In
Battie: $6,060,600 (with trade bonus added in... NJ must account for that when calculating incoming salary)
Alston: $4,900,000
Lee: $1,176,240
New Jersey's uses their Marcus Williams TPE of $1,262,520 to absorb Lee's salary, leaving a worthless amount of $86,280.
Then they trade Carter's $14,724,125 for Battie's $6,060,600 and Alston's $4,900,000, creating a new Trade Exception for New Jersey in the amount of $3,763,525, which will expire June 25, 2010.

Re: The Vince Carter trade?
Thanks bgwizarfan that right there explained the minor difference I kept running into between how Sham and Storyteller were reporting Battie's contract amount!
(Wait last thing, do the Nets get a trade exception for Ryan Anderson who the Magic acquired using part of their $3.3 Keyon Dooling TPE?)

Re: The Vince Carter trade?
whoops ...forget anderson was in the trade.... yeah so that's pretty much a separate full trade. Orlando has a $3,300,000 from Dooling last year so anderson's salary is absorbed into that. NJ gets another TPE from Anderson's $1,225,200 salary
