Rubio to meet with Minnesota Timberwolves about contract

A little birdie said Ricky Rubio and his father were to fly to Minneapolis on Saturday to quietly meet with Timberwolves President David Kahn, who was to welcome the team's top draft pick to Minnesota and chat about beginning his NBA future here.

The Wolves don't plan to exert any pressure on Rubio, the draft's No. 5 overall pick, to sign with them. But they will do what they can to accommodate the flashy point guard from Spain without interfering with his current contract status.

Rubio, 18, was paid just $97,000 last season to play with his Spanish team, which wants him to remain in his homeland so much that it attached a $6.6 million buyout to his contract. The Wolves have no control over Rubio's contract, but he's considering going to court to get the amount of the buyout reduced as well as negotiating with his team for a buyout reduction.

The maximum, by NBA rules, that the Wolves could contribute toward a buyout is $500,000. Even if there is a reduction, it's expected that Rubio would have to pay at least several million dollars himself.

How would he do that on a $97,000 salary? Signing with the Wolves would guarantee Rubio approximately $6 million his first two seasons. Assuming he were to sign a four-year contract, as expected, the Wolves would have restricted rights for an additional two seasons, and that would be worth nearly $8 million more.

It's expected that Rubio would be allowed to pay his buyout over several years. Conventional wisdom
is that he might as well agree to the amount and get a lucrative NBA career started.

Regardless, it's expected to be about a month before his buyout issue can be resolved.

By the way, the reason Rubio and his father were to sneak into Minneapolis on Saturday, and not on Friday when the Wolves' other top draft picks — Jonny Flynn and Wayne Ellington — were publicly introduced was that they didn't want the attention with the contract issue unresolved.

It's unclear what jersey number Rubio would wear if he were to sign with Minnesota, but it's a good bet it would become the Wolves' top-selling fan jersey, overtaking Al Jefferson's No. 25.

The Timberwolves' No. 28 pick in last week's NBA draft, shooting guard Wayne Ellington of North Carolina, will be guaranteed $836,300 in his rookie season.

Mike Miller, traded by the Wolves to Washington, was Minnesota's best three-point shooter (37.8 percent) last season. Ellington shot 41.7 percent from three-point range for North Carolina last season.

The Wolves should have Flynn present when the Rube comes in to visit ... we'd be guarenteed his presence at opening day of training camp. I guess I still expect that to be the case when it's all ironed out. We'll know alot by Tuesday.

What if every single wolves/rubio fan agrees to buy a home and away Rubio jersey to beef up his jersey sales cash...Hell I will buy 1,000,000 cans of SPAM if he is sponsored by them if it means getting him to come over! haha

I´m from Spain:

I promise "eternal hate" to Ricky if he don't play for Timberwolves or play for another team.

I still don't know what he wants. He must know how the draft works and if you go there as a star the most probably is you play for a bad team with big posibilities in the future. Minnesota is a great place to grown like a player.

I wish you and Ricky would have grown up best friends and that he would think the same way. I hate when ppl try to manipulate their way to the team they want, that is why it is called the draft! The way I see it, we were one of the hottest teams in January in the entire league before Al Jefferson tore his ACL, and corey brewer tore his ACL right away this year so Ricky should be happy to go to such a young and promising team that will be getting 2 of their best players back when he comes!!

The whole edorsement crap is just Fegan posturing so he can make more money. Rubio was making what, $180,000 last year in Spain? Even if his whole NBA salary went to the buyout, he could easily make more by selling cars in the Twin Cities. Rubio doesn't need the bazillion-dollar endorsements. Fegan wants those endorsements so he can get his 10% or whatever it is.

I am totally cool with waiting 1 year.

We let Flynn lead and see what he can do and then go from there. Best-case scenarios, Flynn wins rookie of the year and looks like Chris Paul 2 an we have a great trading chip to fill out the rest of the roster (in Rubio) or Flynn shows that he is just a back up guy and Rubio comes to take over.

You gotta think that it makes sense to just come over as soon as possible and start his rookie contract (and get endorsements). If he comes over and completey rocks, his rookie contract will be up before he knows it and by 22 he is sitting pretty.

Actually best case....Rubio grows another inch and adds about 15 pounds of muscle...and flynn and rubio rock the backcourt for the next 10 years.

But I would rather have Rubio stay overseas than for us to guarantee him playing time like he seems to want. I have a big problem with professional athletes doing that. If he is half good as he is supposed to be he will have no problem getting 30 minutes a night to start with.

for the millionth time. Flynn and Rubio will play together. Rubio is a SG size, flynn plays offense very well off the ball. Neither will be traded unless it is for a quality offer.

btw, I posted this in the rubio thread last night.

Let's see what comes out of this meeting. I believe things will be clearer after that. At least we will know if Rubio expresses the intention to leave or not.

Not true!! I've never said anything bad about MInnesota. We said pretty much everything we could say giving the information we had. Right now we have to wait for this meeting, and then we'll
re-start with speculations

Being honest, I've been less interested in reading/posting on the Wolves forum since the draft due to all the crap from non-Wolves fans. Usually we got the occasional visitor and we all have fun. Now we have the Knick lemmings spewing garbage that has no basis of fact. Quite obnoxious.

Can't wait to hear what comes of the meeting. They probably went on an Al and Alma's tour of Lake Minnetonka. Or at least that's what a smart GM would do for an impressionable 18 year old.

Most of all I am excited and happy that Rubio gets to see Sota himself. I hope they showed him some nice locations and he gets to see that it gets really hot here as well. We aren't a freezing winter wonderland 24/7.

Is he called shooter because he's constantly shooting, mostly missing, but once and a while he gets a bulls eye?
