NO way in the near future ( next 4/5 years) does evans avg 20 points and 7 assists. No way. Go look at the top assist leaders only 10 players in the WHOLE nba averaged 7 or more. He wont average 7 and probably not even 5/6
I see him more as 14/15 points and 4/5 assists. But the key thing is that he wont make thompson, hawes and martin better like a real point guard would of like rondo, rubio, and flynn.
I would rather take a rubio or rondo type player that gets 12/13 points... 8/9 assists and makes everyone better then what I see evans doing for us.
I'm not expecting 7 assists or more out of Evans, 5 or 6 will be fine - and trust me he'll get at least 4-5. Beno and Rodriguez will provide 3-5 each depending on playing time, Martin 2-3, Garcia 2-3 and then we should get at least one assist each from 3 other players besides Hawes. What will be really important is for Hawes to improve his average of 2 apg last season. If he can become a dependable facilitator, the team will florish. Teams averaged 20-21 apg last season, so I think we should be just fine.
And enough with how you think Rubio would make Thompson and Hawes "so much better". Rubio would have only payed off when they are in transition. Typically they both try to create their own shots from the post or hang around spot shooting outside of the paint. Martin would have ultimetely benefited the most, as feeding off Rubio in transition could have been real sweet. But I think over time, teams would have locked down Martin and suddenly the bulk of our scoring would have been gone.
I will never disagree that Rubio would have been great down the road, but our team would have had to be built all over again around Rubio and it's obvious the Maloofs are not willing to wait around forever for something magical to happen. Face it, Rubio was a project who had question marks and Petire seems to be on a short leash to make this team competitve now.
